the year is almost over, we are looking back on 2014. the year will be mainly remembered for sven piayda´s solo exhibition entitled 'show/time' at kuntverein bochumer kulturrat as curated by carsten roth. the show gained great feedback and was piayda´s greatest show so far. next to it the ikosaeder gallery presented a piayda solo show in september. piayda also participated with notable contributions to different group shows like 'any minute now' at kugelpudel or 'jahresausstellung' at kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr (which is still on).
next to exhibitions, the year came up with performances, releases and artist talks — and it has some sneak peeks for the future.

the year 2014 also came up with may artist talk with sven piayda, you might remember the events for 'show/time' at kunstverein bochumer kulturat, 'seascapes' at ikosaeder gallery and 'jahresaustellung' at kunstmuseum mülheim, see picture above.



this year had only two smaller live performances, a 20 minute live set from AESTATE for the opening of the beatrice richter solo show in recklinghausen and a performance of stefan wiehe and sven piayda remixing classical music dealing with the sea for the opening of 'seascapes' at ikosaeder gallery.
we hope for more AESTATE dj sets in the future, the group was not able to follow the requests.


the year 2014 is also coined by the ikosaeder gallery and it´s numerous events. being represented by the gallery, oscar ledesma and sven piayda collaborated for numerous events, like the solo show, the ongoing group show, musical performances, the artist talk and a common performance entitled 'diorama camping tour'.

AESTATE did not manage to release an ep or album in 2014 but they have been busy with managing different stuf and producing music to be put out in the future. actually two side projects made their way:
together with christian eschler from kill_scrxxn sven piayda founded mmaakkee and put out a debut ep on zany music.
also, record of tides, the pre-pre-AESTATE project of jay hammes and sven piayda released the debut album in 2004 on zany music as physical release and managed to do a re-release as digital version on kreislauf.org in 2014 opening the cult to a wider audience.

plus: digital kunstrasen has quit and vanished inculding all auf the releases of the net. AESTATE are recently working with kreislauf.org and zany music on a sulution to keep the releases available. please be patient.


AESTATE have been collaborating with visual artist matthias danberg for his new movie entitled 'ORDER chapter 3' from the 'ORDER' cycle. danberg and piayda have been editing known and previously unreleased AESTATE tracks to be used as soundtrack for the animated short film. the editing work had been done back in november, see picture above.
the movie will be premiered in january, screened among the previous chapters of the cycle in an upcoming matthias danberg solo show. more info to follow soon. parallel to the exhibition, zany music will offer a limited time download of the soundtrack.
danberg and piayda are recently planning further common projects featuring exclusively produced music.

an outlook for 2015: the galerie143 will open a sven piayda solo show entitled 'new pictures from outer rim' featuring sound, video and photography on february 7, 2015.
the studio is recently busy to produce works between the hollidays.

last friday, the ikosaeder gallery opened the last show for the year. the group show features gallery represented as well as some new artists offering smaller and less expensive works.

yesterday the kunstmuseum mülheim offered a guided tour with artist talk with selected artists of the 'jahresausstellung der mülheimer künstlerinnenn und künstler — weißschwarz'.

the artist talk was well attended and offered background and conceptional info on selected works over a 90 minute guidance.
another artist talk is scheduled for january featuring different artists from the show.

yesterday the kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr opened the annual group show of artists connected to mülheim, by birth or residency. above you see dr. beate reese during the introduction speech, following the salutation by mayor dagmar mühlenfeld. the show is subtitled 'weiß–schwarz' (showing black and white only) and features sven piayda´s photographic tableau 'ground swell' (2010) and the video installation 'one by one' (2014).

on saturday, december 6, the kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr will open the annual group show of artists connected to mülheim, by birth or residency. this year´s exhibition will be subtitled 'weiß–schwarz' and will feature sven piayda´s second contribution to the annual group show: the photographic tableau 'ground swell' (2010) and an video installation 'one by one' (2014) wil be on the show.
'one by one' is combining known and previously non-exhibited work to an endless narration on discovery and recovering, see merged stills above.

[...] In diesem Jahr haben sich die Künstlerinnen und Künstler das Arbeitsthema „Weiß–Schwarz“ gesetzt, was eine stärkere Akzentuierung von zeichnerischen und grafischen Arbeiten erwarten lässt. Beginnend mit weißen Arbeiten wird während der Laufzeit der Ausstellung erstmals ein Wechsel der Arbeiten stattfinden, so dass am Ende der Ausstellung die schwarz gestalteten Arbeiten überwiegen werden, die an der Finissage am 18. Januar 2015 in Gänze zu sehen sind. Die Jahresausstellung wird sich in diesem Jahr über das Erdgeschoss, den Grafikraum und das 2. Obergeschoss erstrecken. [...] Einer der jüngsten teilnehmenden Künstler ist der Neubewerber Sven Piayda (geboren 1977), der sich im Bereich von Film und Fotografie bewegt. this time the show features more than just one work by each artist, sven piayda´s 'steam process' (2011) can be seen next to 'herbarium show' (2010) in the group show.

last sunday, the galerie plan.d. group show ‘schmu’ ended after four weeks of exhibition. last friday the piayda solo show ‘seascapes’ was closed at ikosaeder gallery in essen. you can have a look on the collected documentary material in the exhibitions section.

the upcoming weekend will come up with a bunch of art fairs in and around the ruhr area. the bloom art fair in cologne will open on thursday, october 23, once again with dortmund based galerie143 also representing sven piayda´s works to find at BL-B06. the fair will end on sunday, october 27.

we like to put your focus on 2011 KPR participating artist janina simone kulcsar presenting her work for the first time at the contemporary art ruhr. you can find out abot her and her current portolio over at janinasimone.com.


this fall/winter will also come up with a bundle of interesting group shows featuring sven piayda. the representing galerie143 will open the annual ‘offene galerie’ group show on november 21.

also we are happy to announce that AESTATE are finishing a new release recently. a release date and label are not confirmed yet, but the group has placed some innuendos on what is coming up.

last weekend the gallery opened all day on saturday and sunday (september 27 & 28) kunstspur. here you had the chance to visit the 'seascapes' exhibition as well as oscar ledesma´s atelier and have a look at his current works. as part of the kunstspur event, the gallery presented an artist talk with sven piayda. above you see a snapshot of piayda explaining concepts and prouction techniques.

Das Meer: Realität oder Fiktion
Das Meer und seine unendliche Weite waren schon immer in vielerlei Hinsicht ein künstlerisches Problem. Die Frage lautet immer wieder: Wie kann man das Meer in all seinen Facetten, in nur einem Bild erfassen? Wie kann man seine gewaltige Größe auf einem räumlich stark begrenzten Platz, auf ein Foto reduzieren?
Dafür gibt es einige konventionelle Möglichkeiten: Viele Künstler verwenden daher das Thema Meer als eine Metapher, um Melancholie, Drama oder Einsamkeit auszudrücken. In solchen Versuchen geht es jedoch immer um das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur. Somit sind immer ein oder mehrere Menschen zu sehen. Ein anderer Versuch besteht darin, das Meer als Kulisse zu verwenden, für große Seeschlachten, Orkane, Schiffbrüche usw.

Im Bereich der Fotografie sind mir vor allem die Arbeiten zweier Künstler in diesem Zusammenhang bekannt , die sich mit dem Thema Meer beschäftige. In Ihren Werken ist das Meer allein Objekt des Studiums: Fabien Baron (Liquid Light) und Hiroshi Sugimoto (ebenfalls Seascapes).
Sie versuchten, diese weite Unendlichkeit zu erfassen. Machmal geht es dabei um das Gefühl, das man als Betrachter spürt, machmal geht es darum, jede einzelne, noch so kleine Welle zu betrachten. Beide Künstler arbeiten mit analogen Mitteln; sie zeigen auch damit, dass man mit riesigen Kameras und großen Negativen sehr schöne Bilder erschaffen kann.

Sven Piayda dagegen geht das Thema in einer abstrakteren Weise an. Im Zentrum seiner Fotografien steht die Frage: Was genau ist das, was wir als unendlichen Horizont verstehen? Ich habe das Gefühl, dass Sven in seiner Arbeit eine radikale Antwort auf diese Frage liefert. Und die kommt so zustande: Ausgehend von der Idee, dass die Breite des Meeres ein Gefühl in uns erzeugt, ist er davon überzeugt, dass wir dieses auch abstrahieren können.
Er komprimiert einfach diese abstrakte Information in der horizontalen Ebene, reduziert das Bild auf die Breite eines Pixels, und expandiert es dann wieder.

Wenn ich einen Blick auf andere Bilder Piaydas werfe und weiß, dass entweder See oder Himmel nicht gemalt, sondern generiert ist, erkenne ich ein Muster. Meistens erinnere ich mich dann auch an eine spezielle Passage aus Stanislaw Lems Buch “Solaris”. Eines der Themen, mit dem sich dieses Buch beschäftig ist das Meer, diesmal jedoch in einer ganz überraschenden Form, nämlich als eine höhere Intelligenz, die wir geistig nicht erfassen können. Auch hier steht diese unbegreifliche, unendliche Weite im Mittelpunkt der Fragestellung. In Lems Buch wird das Meer als eine Art Künstler dargestellt, ein Künstler, der uns mit seinen Wellen eine Botschaft übermitteln will. Wir können diese Botschaft nur leider nicht begreifen.

about six weeks after opening and one week after closing sven piayda´s great solo exhibition 'show/time' a kunstverein bochumer kulturrat we are happy to present the collected documentary media now. the exhibitions site will feature installation views as well as impressions from the opening, press conference, artist talk and de-installation plus some making-of snippets.

also the studio has produced an eight minute video documentation of the show, enabling a virtual walk through the show escorted by the sound of 'la mer'.

the video documentary simulates a walk through the show giving the sound you would hear while watching the photographs and videos. of course, watching everything would take about two hours, this is just an excerpt.

last friday the kunstverein bochumer kulturrat opened sven piayda´s solo exhibition 'show/time' for the last time. the show was running for five weeks and was well attended by visitors during the opening and the opening hours, also it gained great feedback.
above you see curator carsten roth and sven piayda in the exhibition before de-installing, both look back on a successful collaboration.
the whole exhibition recieved great critics, as well as roth´s introduction speech and visitor guidance.
the artist talk was done for the first time in a kbk show and pulled more visitors into the show. also, future collaborations with other galleries and kunstvereine have been planned.

curator carsten roth and sven piayda are working on a further exhibition project together but without naming any details yet.

the show was well documented, we hope to come up with numerous installation views, a documentary video as well as roth´s introduction speech next week. actually theer is a lot of material to put in shape.


the video chamber for the 'show/time' double projection looks quite sad without any screening but lights on. the next show will be opened on september 5.

last thursday the kunstverein bochumer kulturrat invited for an artist talk with curator guidance for the 'show/time' exhibition. here sven piayda and curator carsten roth led through the show giving information on concept, production and historical background.
as different media have announced different starting times the artist talk started with a smaller audience which expanded over the 70 minutes guidance through the show.
as this was the first artist talk in a kbk show so far, this experiment was a big succes and ended up in great conversation and connecting for future projects.

the sven piayda solo show 'show/time' at kunstverein bochumer kulturrat curated by carsten roth is still running until august 15 and is going on its final week of exhibition. please make sure you do not miss to see the show. the kbk has not scheduled further events escorting the show, friday will be the last day of exhibition, there will be no finissage.


above you see curator carsten roth and sven piayda in the small cabinet talking about 'top' and 'bottom' of the d70 series. even when both had a lot to tell, many questions came up and were answered giving the event a lot of dialogue and discussion.


during the artist talk 'endor national park' was nicknamed 'shrödinger`s ewok' playing with the idea of the famous cat translated to the wood photographs. the question remains if somthing can be fictional and documemntary at the same time, and if the artist becomes the author by showing material produced by someone else...


still a magnet, final station of the exhibition course: the 'show/time' double projection takes you on a long ride through time and space, making you discover the surface in the end.

based upon the good feedback and large attendance the kunstverein invites to an artist talk with curator guidance this thursday.
here you will have the opportunity again to visit the show, get more info and place your questions.
even when the opening and opening hours were well attended, the kunstverein and the studio recieved many requests for another date with guidance and interaction.

today, exactly ten years after the original physical only release on zany music in 2004, the hamburg based label kreislauf.org re-releases the record of tides debut album 'timber' as digital version.
the re-release features the original tracklisting and production plus the bonus tracks 'summer break 2004 pt1' and 'summer break 2004 pt2' which are mash-ups based upon tracks of the album and being the soundtrack of sven piayda´s video installation 'summer break 2004' from 2009 and expanding the original length up to 80 minutes.

record of tides was founded in 2004 by jay hammes and sven piayda inspired by common trips to the sea after breaking up with their first band apologies which remained without any release. even after putting out a debut together, the group did not manage to create a follow up or to play live, but have never split up officially.


the original physical release gained good feedback back in 2004, the compact disc releases with black-and-white printing on colourd paper based upon photographs of a tent by hammes have become collectors` items already and are out of stock.
the small circle of record of tides listeners have been very loyal over a decade requesting for re-releases and new material, so 'timber' became one of the mostly requested and appreciated releases on zany music.
also the record of tides project is believed to be the starting point for further piayda related projects on zany music like sellafield, AESTATE and even the current project mmakkee.

the design and tecnology is still quite 2004...

above you see AESTATE perform 'unicorn' live at artemis werkstätten in recklinghausen during the opening of the beatrice richter solo show 'abstract landscapes'. 'unicorn' is one of many great tunes on 'timber' and was also used for studio ducumentaries.huff and piayda turn the piece into their very own version, you might realize the relation of both projects.
the video contains some post-production visuals, but no further edits.


the studio documentary of the 'any minute now' group show at kugelpudel, bochum early 2014 also features record of tides´ 'unicorn'.


kreislauf.org has already released the latest AESTATE EP entitled "SUM FALLS" on october 2, 2013.
further releases in the future are on schedule.

'summer break 2004' at museum abtei liesborn in wadersloh in 2012, as part of the group show 'aus dem leben der tische' curated by dr. ellen markgraf. this was the first great exhibition of sven piayda´s 2009 video piece 'summer break 2004' featuring sound by record of tides. . the video can also be found in the current show at kbk, see below.

last saturday the kunstverein bochumer kulturat finally opend the 'show/time' solo exhibition by sven piayda after two years of preparing. in spit of the extremely hot wheather, the show and the opening were well attended over three hours.

yet another sneak peek in the show: the basement features a small room, called the chamber presenting two monitors next to each other, 'big pollution' and 'roses(after richter') mirror each other in their superficial structure, exploring the differences in using the medium and its surface, uncovering its purpose and limitations. presenting both works in combination was in scedule since 2010 after prodcing the works, now this idea has be put into action for the first time.


the 'show/time' double projection features 'once' (with michaela best) on the left & 'again'. the syncronized projections are running about 30 minutes. watching everything presented in the show will take approximately two hours. curator carsten roth announced 37 video works to be screened in the show.

Die Düsseldorfer Künstlerin Beatrice Richter bespielt die Artemis Werkstätten in Recklinghausen. Die 24jährige Studentin der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf widmet sich seit 2012 der Malerei und ist Schülerin von Herbert Brandl. Nun zeigt sie ausgewählte Papier- und Leinwandarbeiten von klein bis großformatig. Für die gebürtige Recklinghäuserin ist es die erste Einzelausstellung.

Ihre Bilder leben von starken Kontrasten, leuchtenden Farben und dem Wechsel von Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit. Inhaltlich setzt sich die junge Malerin mit dem klassischen Sujet der Landschaft auseinander, das sie durch ihre ganz eigene Farb- und Formensprache in die Moderne transportiert. "Es geht um den Prozess der Malerei und darum, dass sich die anfangs reinen Farbflächen zu eigenständigen, autonomen Landschaften entwickeln."
Doch die Werke sind nicht einfach nur bunt, sie vermitteln eine mystische und geheimnisvolle Stimmung und laden zum Fragen und Verweilen ein. Abgerundet wird der Nachmittag der Vernissage durch die musikalische Performance des Essener Duos AESTATE, das 2006 von Chris Huff und Sven Piayda gegründet wurde und den Zuhörer mit ihren "düsteren" und "abstrakten Grooves" auf eine Reise durch ein digitales Nirwana führt.

after the first group show at ikosaeder gallery, oscar ledesma and sven piayda fill the gap between the shows. next friady, june 20, the two artists will start their second common performance entitled 'diorama camping tour 2014'. the performance will feature a camping scene dealing with video, installation and music, all around an ikosaeder shaped tent.
during this performance you are welcome to watch, take and share pictures, you are not able to enter the gallery for this event.

Nach der ersten Ausstellung in der Ikosaeder Galerie leitet Künstler und Galerist Oscar Ledesma die erste Interimsaktion vor Ort an. Zusammen mit dem Künstler Sven Piayda gestaltet er den Galerieraum für ihre zweite gemeinsame Performance um: die Diorama Camping Tour 2014.
Zusammen nähern sie sich auf kritische und humorvolle Weise ihren eigenen Konzepten und dem Kunstbetrieb an, die Galerie wird zum lebendigen Schaukasten konstruierter Wirklichkeit.
Als Unterkunft steht den Campern ein Zelt in Form eines Ikosaeders zur Verfügung, das von der Firma Heimplanet und Frackenpohl Poulheim GmbH entwickelt und für die Performance zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. Es symbolisiert auf poetische und surreale Art die Unterkunft der beiden Künstler in der Galerie.
Achtung: Die Besucher dürfen nicht die Galerie betreten!

you might remember sven piayda presenting the first black and white dummy in march. the picture showing a probe, a planet and a moon valley is actually a mini series called 'past present future' and will be exhibited in three great tableaus in the show.


the video production is also going on recently. after bad difficulties, the studio has successfully produced a copy of 'golden record' for a competition and is now focussing on producing the video discs for the 'show/time' exhibition.

after a longer pause, we are happy to announce new live activities of AESTATE for this year. the group is scheduld to play a short performance during the opening of the beatrice richter solo show at artemis werkstätten in recklinghausen on june 29. this will be the first live performance by AESTATE since 2011.


the group is believed to do an electronic set without visuals this time, you can find out about AESTATE and further dates over at aestate-online.com. dj set dates as well as further live dates are in the making.

Die Düsseldorfer Künstlerin Beatrice Richter bespielt die Artemis Werkstätten in Recklinghausen. Die 24jährige Studentin der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf widmet sich seit 2012 der Malerei und ist Schülerin von Herbert Brandl. Nun zeigt sie ausgewählte Papier- und Leinwandarbeiten von klein bis großformatig. Für die gebürtige Recklinghäuserin ist es die erste Einzelausstellung.

Ihre Bilder leben von starken Kontrasten, leuchtenden Farben und dem Wechsel von Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit. Inhaltlich setzt sich die junge Malerin mit dem klassischen Sujet der Landschaft auseinander, das sie durch ihre ganz eigene Farb- und Formensprache in die Moderne transportiert. "Es geht um den Prozess der Malerei und darum, dass sich die anfangs reinen Farbflächen zu eigenständigen, autonomen Landschaften entwickeln."
Doch die Werke sind nicht einfach nur bunt, sie vermitteln eine mystische und geheimnisvolle Stimmung und laden zum Fragen und Verweilen ein. Abgerundet wird der Nachmittag der Vernissage durch die musikalische Performance des Essener Duos AESTATE, das 2006 von Chris Huff und Sven Piayda gegründet wurde und den Zuhörer mit ihren "düsteren" und "abstrakten Grooves" auf eine Reise durch ein digitales Nirwana führt.

oscar ledesma, essen and mexico city based artist and gallerist, will open his new gallery IKOSAEDER on may 9, starting with a group show featuring woman artists stephanie brysch, katrin keller, julia schwarz and verena wagner. the gallery will officially open around 6 pm and the vernissage will also feature a gig by botticelli baby.

the closing will be escorting by the awards ceremony, one given by the jury and one given by the visitors..
