a year to remember | entry by sven |
|
no doubt 2009 will be
one of the years to remember. i mean, there are a thousand things pulling
me down like certain deseases or different friendships gone wrong, the
searching, finding and losing of a thousand things. but i do not feel
like mourning, have to think of 2009 as a year for growing up, for taking
some things more serious and getting a better idea of what i want to do,
actually. |

papillonner by michaela best out now | entry by sven |
|
i remember the last
days of summer, and nature´s full blossom. michaela came up with
the strange idea of taking pictures of flowers for a calender. with this
vague direction of production we went in the gruga (former federal botanic
exhibition park) to portrait some blossoms. i didn´t do the pictures,
she did, i was more into my dropouts video theses days. |

rise of the early bird, finally | entry by sven |
|
it was a masterplan
for years now: whenever i was driving around in early morning hours i
had the idea to get up early on a day off to take some photographs showing
the city waking up. unbelievable, today was the day. due different circumstances
i managed to get up, supported by michi (who is coming up these days with
her own photographic project). well, we ended up as tired zombies for
the whole day. |

chromekraut revisited, from feedback to feedback | entry by sven |
|
when i started the
blog in 2003 i did not expect how big it was about to grow. i always called
it "journal", like a trivia magazine about the things in my
orbit. i witnessed a thousand blogs come and go, their phenomena of bordeom,
abuse and abandon. |
above you see chromekraut
live (i guess it was their only gig so far). you can have a look at their
performance now to make sure not to moss the next one. |

burst the bubble, in the name of art / AM&G | entry by sven |
|
yesterday was a day
with different dates, i joined the opening of the year´s final art
show from kunst raum, which was a collection of outstanding pieces,
presented with a great introduction and wine. a perfect start for an evening!
i will have an eye on this gallery, let´s see what we can do together... |
me on the inside,
the bubble has a strange but teasing acoustics, the photographs on a rope. |
my classic view on
the HÜTTE, the bubble illuminates everything in a strange way. actually,
the future of it is insecure, my plans for it start in 2010, will the
city of mülheim a.d.r. have the money and the patience to keep it
running until then? |

SSS&S opening success, thank you very much | entry by sven |
|
what a year, what
a day! last saturday we finally opened the SETS, STILLS, STORIES AND
STRUCTURES exhibition. i have expeced some of you, but the respond
was unbelievable and fantastic, thank you very much! |
here is a small view
upon the exhibition, i do not want to show to much, actually you have
to see all to understand the concept behind it. while the video installations
were changing (and sometimes stopping at the false position) no-one had
the time to concentrate on the new arranged photographs on wall. |
next to DUALITY
1-3 (which was already exhibitioned on kunst-cluster this year and
is now waiting for sequels) many new works had been on screening. above
you see an installation view of HELIOS, the opening piece of the
screenings. |

shooting papercuts / pondskater and pyramids | entry by sven |
|
wow,
what a day. i was really into business that day, in art and music, avantgarde
- whatever... |
later that night i
visited the malkasten for the second time, this time mainly for music.
pondskater
is one of these avantgarde electronica pioneers, i met him first on our
gig with graph back in 2007, then he wrote a reveiw for the superflat
album, now he is working on a remix for AESTATE to be released in 2010. |
i really hope to see
you on saturday, november 7, 2009 at the stoffwechsel. |

rainbows and toilets - artist´s epiphany | entry by sven |
|
i had to go to boesner
in witten for creating the photogrphic works for the SETS, STILLS, STORIES
AND STRUCTURES exhibtition, to be opened in the stoffwechsel on november
7. |
i was travelling a
lot within the last days, i returned to antwerp last friday to visit the
M KHA.
no doubt, this is a great museum, fantastic museal architecture, but i
did´nt really find the outstanding stuff, i was looking for, but
i found the toilets: entering the museum i found myself in front of these
doors: men, artists and women. it was hard enough to define
my male role through the last 20 years, now it seems like there was a
third sex i have always assumed... |
that´s a picture
of me in one oth the three rooms. guess which one it is! you can win something:

annex: expect me where you don´t expect me | entry by sven |
|
wow! what was that?
i went to roemont in the netherlands yesterday, for shopping reasons,
actually. well, there are people who claim that i dress myself in the
dark or show up in my pyjama, but i´m a fashion victim. while i
was jumping from one designer store to the other, art stroke me! what
was that? a pirate ship for kids? a futuristic church? joep van lieshout
gone wrong? like everyone else i was surprised, like noone else, i was
curious. i was going around, finding some explaination, this piece is
called ANNEX and is a archetectural sculpture by rob voerman. |

you know, these things
are always poetic, they can surprisingly twist the ordinary. for me this
is fun, these things never served me answers, but they help to find the

wow, there are so
many things happening at the moment, sometimes it is even hard to believe
what was some days before...it is scary, and funny. while the weather
is still panding between last days of summer and grey autumn, i find myself
tired and sleeping a lot at the moment, but i´m really working hard
on new stuff whenn awake... |

the opernbauhütte re-opens - what´s the future | entry by sven |
|
when things are over
you tend to look back and imagine how it would be if it would not have
ended, of if it would start again. the whole opernbauhütte-thing
was important and a fantstic part of my life in 2009. all this linking
between art, culture, opera, architecture and party in such a surrealistic
geography really made me have a good time, made me meet great people and
made me participate as an artist. now, the opera is over (see svennet
news: 2009-07-06 the end of the opera... and aftermath) but what
happens with the container builing? |
|
|
to sum it up: it is
great to see, this magic container will stay (hopefully longer than we
expect it now) and will be used for many different outstanding actions. |

back to track and some forecast, hopefully | entry by sven |
|
finding back into
ordinary life, i had the chance to join the opening of the benjamin
nachtwey exhibition at baustelle schaustelle. you may have a look
on his paintings on his website, but you must see them on the wall. he
seems to have found the perfect technique for painting the woods. we had
a long chat about structure and compostition in the forest, on surface
structure of painting and vanishing information and bringing back depth
into a photograph by painting it. i have learned a lot, so can you. nachtwey
has a strong idea and knows exactly what he is doing, and he is actually
searching for the non-analytic thing in art, the undenyable beauty. |
|
|
some forecast,
hopefully: some of these news are surprising and funny. you know about
the opernbauhütte
thing, the whole process of joining, playing live with AESTATE, doing
HDJ set, having a good time at the container. the project is over, but
the container is still there. friday will be a meeting (i´ll do
pictures hopefully) and we´ll see what to do with this building.
more over, you should set your schedules for the AESTATEvisual final at
september 18th. and for september 25th, that´s a special date, we
will have a tiny party, maybe with you, you can win something. SEPTEMBER
25TH!!! no bells ringing? come on!!! |

dropped out, reset and returning to susie | entry by sven |
|
i was recording, rock
songs, actually. this time i have no real album written, i just let it
devellop, being excited about the direction to be disovered. while working
in studio and making plans, a certain sickness made me drop out of work
and life as usual. it is a kind of strange, how quickly things can change,
how quickly they can turn around. |
talking about positive
aspects of being dropped out: i finally found the tome to do some tiny
set-ups for renderings. and here are some works: on the left: dropouts:
a kind of photograph/video interaction, while the trees are strongly moved
by the wind, the couple doesn´t move, seems like the are not effected
by the wind, they just drop out of the world, the right screen shows their
disappearance. looking at this work makes me think of the meeting point
video. maybe the couple are the two daters, who finally find a happy end
together... |

the fish restaurant at the edge of the world | entry by sven |
|
oh, it is already
august and i´m a little sick. i know we are still in summer, but
i can feel the autumn coming up. anyway, the earlier i feel the end the
earlier i like to look back. this summer i had the chance to spend some
days in the netherlands and belgium, and for a fish head like me the is
the duty to go out to have some real good fish. |
this is a pic i have
taken on the inside, i looks like the KRUSTY KRAB from spongebob, don´t

works on paper and incident bundles in düsseldorf | entry by sven |
|
due some strange incidents
i was booked into a lindner hotel in duesseldorf to attempt the current
exhibition of the museum
kunst palast. a catalogue was sent even weeks before, a fantastic
catalogue. no doubt, the exhibition is fantascally curated and presented,
giving an overview on changing sujets and techniques of the last 400 years.
no doubt it was really running you over, too much, too massive, maximum
qality and quantity. |
lost and found: the
picture above shows my installation of the devine masterplan back
in the world heritage zollverein 2001 and the same location some weeks
ago. i was there incidentally some weeks ago, funny, isnt it? i just post
it now, because i will use the ART section to illustrate some of my installations
and past works. there is a lot going on these days, so i need some stucture. |

i went into a museum and pissed into a sculpture | entry by sven |
|
within the last week
i had the chance to visit rotterdam twice. i was relaxing, collection
visual material (of course) and tried to see some art in the big museums
in rotterdam. on my first visit, i got lost in the city. actually, we
wanted to visit museum
boijmans van beuningen, but we were not shure, if it would be the
right thing... |
i guess my idea of
rotterdam was always something about stupid hadcore techno, but on afternoons
it seems to be the ity of art. when i went throughj the streets i met
two specific works that striked me imediately (i guess i know what they
are, if i´m wrong, please correct me...): on the left: franz west
sculptures functioning as benches, inviting you to sit on them near the
water. on the right: a dwarf with a bell and a dildo by paul mccarthy,
well, you must be quite brave to put such a piece on the mrket place,
right??? |

|
usually, summer is
the time to relax and to have a good time, and usually i spend some days
in studio. i haven´t so far this year, becuase i´m very much
into video and video installations. |
above you see a still
of the black and white splitscreen video. it is simply about a loop. while
the windmill water pump pumps up water from a river just to lead it back
some feet away, the two screens show the same order of shots at different
times, all in beautiful ansel adams black and white. you can only hear
the river while watching the windmill spinning eternaly. if
you haven´t seen or downloaded the AESTATE synfex counts (live)
video from the /CAMP so far, do it now, it will be taken off the

confessions of a vivid mind | entry by sven |
|
there is a lot going
on these days, i thought i should probably come up with some text and
some pictures to keep. above you see flint and me in front of the sportscar
factory of wiesmann. |
and here we approached
the techno-temple in dülmen. |
there was another
funny project: after hanging around with flint having some days off we
had a funny idea. as i am playing around with video art these days and
as flint models or acts sometimes for me we had the idea to transform
a photograph we did together into a video work! the photograph was called
meeting
point and was executed in 2006. this work is a big tableau using narrative
structures. as it is called meeting point and as it shows a single person
waiting we get the idea of a date to take place, a boy waiting for a girl,
who is not showing up. (this is probably what a story is about: a conflict
or something i sdevelloping into a different directin than expected.) |
a final review to
the white nights: playing it every year, we never managed to watch the
drei groschen oper by berthold brecht. this year we were lucky,
very lucke, it was brilliant, funny, exploring the human focus on money
and power coverd with pretended friendship and love. thank you for this
big cultural fun. if
you haven´t seen or downloaded the AESTATE synfex counts (live)
video from the /CAMP so far, do it now, it will be taken off the

that was a strange
approach to the white nights. due the heavy thunderstom the theatre play
was cancelled, the catering closed, only expensive wine left... and no
water!!! well, the audience remained a small one, the park was adorned
a usually, but no play, just music. |
i have never seen
this park so empty during the white nighs. thank god, the stage wasn´t
blown away... if

gregor schneider is
something like a contemporary pop star of postmodern art, many people
are afraid of this ordinary looking guy who is just (re-)bulding rooms.
his recent work is called END and is exhibited, or better say, transforming
the museum abteiberg in moenchengaldbach, his home town. (here also is
his home base and base work, the DEAD HOUSE UR, rhydt) i have seen the
black entry on pictures before, it always looked so strange, i thougt
they were photoshopped, but actually it looks this way. this big black
mouth had been on my mind for weeks when i finally visited the museum
last saturday. |

lucky luke / "wo war eigentlich rantanplan?" | entry by libella |

fear of joy / joy of fear: ART COLOGNE 2009 | entry by sven |
|
every
year, about spring, there are these four days of art fair in cologne.
a must see and place to be for me, usually i do not visit this fair on
sundays (usually you are compleatly exhausted in the end) but this year
i had to go there on saturday. surprisingly, it was the smallest AC i
have seen in nine years, it was not too little, not at all, but it shouldn´t
be smaller. |
let´s start
with a masterpiece, and a masterpiece expirience. we entered the first
hall and turned into an installation of photographs of trees. yeah, nothing
special, right? i have develloped a weakness for surprisingly ordinary
looking pictures. and here robert voit (a thomas ruff class graduate)
shows - let´s call it portraits
- neutral but extremely beautiful and touching pictures of trees. great
work, nothing special so far, but wait...there is more: actually voit´s
new trees (the name of the series) turn out to be mobile phone
areal masts, camouflaged as trees of the surrounding landscape. |
next to all the art,
the people there are amusing to watch, this is what my companions said.
well, i was only fascinated by a woman with a pink, (or violet?) blue,
white, balck...whatever dress.
i won´t make fun of anyone´s fashion, i know, i´m also
looking like a parot - a dead, monochrome parot. a pale ex-parot? you
know, style is the opposite of fashion, right? |
more, more, more.
left you see a piece by christoph
schlingensief. he is one of my favourites these days, i do not understand
his work, his films, his plays, his art...no, not at all, but i like to
listen to him talking, i´m sure, he knows what he is doing and that
is enough for me. |
i´m an artist
on the one hand, but an art collector (and an art lover) on the other.
i have pieces (sometimes only editions) by eija-liisa ahtila, phoenix,
david bowie, pointy bell, edda gerusel and now even julian opie. he has
develloped a very unique but simple language in visual expression. his
works exhibited of dancing modles are funny and perfect pieces. i needed
to buy stuff, so i found
(and bought) this flip-book of shanoza and ann dancing. |

the flamma piayda complex compleated | entry by sven |
|
wow,
that was a long day in studio, and a good one. you
know, the flamma piayda complex is a band, or project, however
you want to call it, with a big problem of time, so there is not much
time. yesterday we started with nothing, except some old riffs. we managed
it to come up with a great rock song, we even discovered our trademark
sound! |
|
|
once again, above
you see sebastian flamma doing some producer work, below the "band"
outside, somehow tilted. |
|
|
the musem fokwang
has
a long history. for me, it is a great part of my own way of finding identity
as an artist, waching shows by thomas ruff, william turner and atelier
van lieshout to name a few, not to forgert all the group exhibitions.
thank you, i´m looking forwart to 2010, there will be a lot to come,
i guess. |

datamilch on KD09, designing the future | entry by sven |
|
due
some funny incidents i had the chance to join the exhibition of graduates
of the design department of the bergische universität wuppertal.
allthough the internet site appeared not that teasing, the exhibition
was, coming up with different projects and syles. there had been works
dealing with corporate designs for restaurants and zoos, bible covers,
illustrated statistics and different noises canned in tiny black cubes.
all in all very inspiring and entertaining. brobably the most impressive
work (to me) was the collection of short spots called "bist du ein
forscher?" by sebastian gimmel. |
the design department
has just moved into a new bulding, perfectly arranged on the inside, playing
trick on your perception. design is a big game, and here they know how
to play entertainingly, triangles turn into polygons and back, sensless
graffitis turn into signs...and back. |
2009-03-21 the eichbaum grows: high life in the opernbauhütte | entry by sven
fortunately
i had the chance to join the eichbaum consortium again. here i had the
chance to meet photographer guntram walter,
see above.(find out about his work over here)
hm, two photohraphers, some ideas on imagery, some space...why not do
a show together? |
there
so many great ideas around and the spring sun even pushes my actionism
to a maximum. |
2009-03-14 hive goth my mind made up / you goat maya art uno | entry by sven
mtv
sucks, no doubt. introduced as music television you only find doubtful
dating shows of stupid sex-addicted teenagers and once-upon-a-time-celebs
looking for new "partners" by brainless games and a lot grabbing.
whenever you are lucky enough to find a music video, you will brobably
end up with beyonce. |
the
song is quite hot chip style (good choice) and the video appears
as a strange karaoke sing-a-long video, the leading ball knocking out
the band members and additional performers, while the simple lyrics transform
into non-sense phonetic sound-a-likes... |
2009-03-12 imagine you´re driving fast, rolling sculptures | entry by sven
creating
art can be based on different reasons. as an artist i have worked with
different diciplines, some more some less serious. as i´m also telling
more than enough about the serious part, i´d like to tell something
about the less serious one, for a good reason. |
ATTENTION:
we are recently very successful with AESTATE, we are planning and preparing
upcoming live shows and output which you would not have expected... |
2009-02-23 performance release and bad taste | entry by sven
it
is a long and cold winter. i feel we are always sick when it comes to
our long planned events. thanks for joining us! it was quite short, our
special guest mr flamma had to leave early because of a tight schedule,
performance dvd director ms best was also tired, live performance photographer
flint more than ready for the floor, but had to keep his power for the
party to come. we also had some fans there craving for the physical releases.
|
like
last
year, i was asked to come up with some tunes once again, this time it
was all about bad taste. well, i wasn´t the only dj this night,
and so there was a larger amount of tracks to play around with. and yes,
there was a lot of stuff from the eighties we hoped to be forgotten. you
know, bad taste is fun, but it hurts. in the end it is just to make people
dance, and there some simple things to know about some principles: |
2009-02-12 bad taste party dj | entry by sven
last
year was a long one, i guess. after experimenting a lot with my disc collection
on parties, i did the most conceptual, or let´s say the most serious
approach to djing on february 23rd, 2008. the result can still be listened
to in the /CAMP. now, about one year later, the party goes on. i was asked
again to dj and confirmed immediately. i do not know, what it is going
to be like this year, but it is going to be bad taste fashion. i will
probably not come up with a fixed dj set as last year, this time it is
going to be more flexable. let´s see, it will be big fun anyway,
so, that´s it for the moment. |
2009-02-07 flint´s salmon massacre III ahead | entry by sven
i´m
sorry to repeat myself, but the first months of a year are always about
to find direction.
and here is the good thing about getting older: most things do not happen
for the first time, so it is a lot easier to handle, and to keep it relaxed,
of course. fixed points are always helpful to figure out your actual position,
whether in space or in time. well, there is christmas, easter, some birthdays
and flint´s salmon massacre. as flint and i (as well as many
more of our friends) are addicts to omega acid 3, we are looking forward
to everthing flint creates of some kilos of salmon. it is a tradition
we started off three years ago, i remember being ill (but joining) last
year, but this year i´m sure we´ll celebrate an fish overkill. |
2009-01-31 cultured beauty and hunting feelings | entry by sven
these
days are short, full of work, so i remain tired all the time. i´m
looking for inspiration, for some quiet entertainment, i prefer to stay
away from gigs and clubs, they usually start when i switch off these days.
spring is getting into reach, more parties next summer, but anyway: i
had the chance to have a look on some diploma works, big exhibition on
two locations. |
without
coming up to critical, i have to admit that i wasn´t impressed by
the major part, but i was blown away by a reries of photographs coming
up quite homely and romantic about hunting in the mountains, probably
the best and outstanding work: combining visual perfection with a demontage
of attitudes concerning hunting... |
2009-01-24 a night at the eichbaumoper | entry by sven
i´m
still trying to get cured from my bad cold and the tiredness connected
with it, i remember the night i spent at the eichbaumoper. it is a project
by the raumlabor berlin and connected theaters and organisations to re-create
the image of a tram station which turned out to be a achitectural and
locational disaster: the eichbaum station. before you you enter the eichbaumbar,
an interesting and teasing housing concept made of containers, have a
look at the station design: |
i
had the chance to have a closer look of this achitecture and to get into
planning common projects with the eichbaumbar staff, we came up with brilliant
ideas, not sure how mamy of these are actually happening in
the future. but anyway, we developed a common vision, and this is probably
the best you can do in the first cold months of a new year. |
2009-01-13 watch more tv: jayTV! / fever ray | entry by sven
as
i feel getting old, starting to spend sunday evenings tired in front of
the tv instead of freaking out in the clubs...well, that´s it. when
my semi-serious free time managemend, coined by a big lack of motivation,
turned out not to move to much, i found a mate for this night. anni (yap,
the one who had the cow for breakfast in india) was as lazy as me, so
we spend the evening in front of the tv, armed just by a "warm"
pizza, delivered by a desoriented pizza boy (no, not fry). watching the
etremely increative tv program, feeling our brains turning in a useless
mass, we switched between the amound of boredoms and found jay! |
who?
ok, for the new ones out there: jay and i started the band APOLOGIES in
1999 and quit even two years later (and also record of tides, 2003/2004),
but we fortunately returned to studio together in 2006 to add congas to
the song "#1" from euphoria.
jay is not only one of the long time music mates, he even has the right
musical advices, he has a great knowledge and understandig for my work,
so his opinion is very imprtant and influencial. after 10 common years
we unortunately do not find the time to record more together, or even
play motorstorm, so every contact is higly appreciated. and as
it is hard to keep in touch, i or better: we were extremely surprised
to see jay on tv, he was a guest in tv show! |
actually,
it do not watch that much tv, but i´m always happy to discover quality.
well´this one i found today: the knife´s singer karin
dreijer andersson comes
up solo, called fever ray, as dark and morbid and mysical as always.
she has one of these voices that can haunt you up into your dreams, i
cannot get the knife´s "heartbeats" out of my head,
it generated a kind of depressive atmosphere, which actually feels cofotable
in a way, like alice in chains, back in 1995. |
