2019-12-29 big ambition, reading symbols and giving in | entry by sven

summing up the whole year in just a few lines is never easy, but let´s not forget that we have started the whole thing with an odyssey to and in leeuwareden. this year is definitely coined by hope and despair, ambition and winning but definitely about disappointment. it has been a year with many small escapes to the sea or to luxembourg (as usually) but always with a known fact that you cannot escape yourself and you have to return to yourself, or your role you are meant to play in this world.

above a picture of me in mudam this summer. we had a short stay, nevertheless it was full of impressions that it feels like having spent he whole summer there. I will go back soon, and I hope it will help me to be off the carousel for some time.

I have already given up too much ambition in the art related activities, but had a great solo show and great participations anyway. my faith is deeply damaged in constant sorrow, making me loose orientation in given moral believes and my idea of transcendence. I have discovered the idea of the completely directionless multiverse, things just happen as one possible variation without any deeper meaning. my ambitions to focus on teaching activities and taking a new position have been successful but did not really made me happy. the promised land turned out to be differently than anticipated. I am in anyway, so lets see where it turns to. however, this year - more than ever before - has taught me the irrelevance of my own actions. after all this constant mourning and complaining I was standing up to take control to realize my own lack of ability to make a change. even more, it is like an actor in a daily soap, going through constellations with different figures in opposition trying to win the scene. every group forces you into a certain role, only in the little time you can spend alone you may wonder who you are actually and what to do with your time.

this is advanced wishing: if do not get what you wish for you feel bad, if you get it you´ll feel bad, too. you are always betrayed; it is never what you have wanted. It is hard to wish these days, hard to turn a wish into ambition. Where to go when there is no lighthouse at the horizon?

I do not have any art shows save for 2020, I believe something will come in, if it won´t nobody cares. I could imagine quitting; ten great years might be enough. I cannot take things seriously that you cannot take seriously.

I have somehow thought about symbols in the last days. directors like alex garland and artists like rembrandt and kehinde wiley have taught me to read the symbols. it is not the paintings title or topic that it is all about and it is not the narration of a movie, the given idea (or truth) is in the symbols. this principle might help to read my everyday (professional) interactions. by simply describing what is going on nothing is reviled. the little actions or single words offer the meta levels of the world. if you can read it, you are save from traps. i am not, obviously. pain is a great motivator, even if there is not ‘promised land’, there is a ‘no-go-area’ for sure. and here you are back in the dilemma: not doing something is not a possible action.

starting the next year is like being on the ocean in a nutshell, equipped with a map and able to navigate. the islands and beaches are just graphics on your map and tell nothing about the land you are going to discover. so you skip navigating and hope for higher forces to bring you to the place you would be unable to find yourself. well, you also might stay in you nutshell forever… in 2020 I hope for good ocean current…

in my last journal entry I came up with the image of people as bulbs in a chandelier told to shine brighter every time until they burn through. I went to a restaurant and found myself under a chandelier looking exactly like the imaginary one making a light that feels dark but not comfortable. however, read the symbols, it is already there.

I had this image of the dead end pivot and asked for your solutions. actually I received no response to it but I made up my own solution. you cannot crack the barriers at the end of the street, so you have to leave the whole thing using a further dimension. keep in mind, you always leave all dead ends, even those you like. the good thing is the ability to return. however, escaping from the dead end pivot means to escape from the entire construct, for a certain period of for ever. I would like to call it ‘multi-dimensional’ thinking, but I guess it is just lateral thinking. may it be helpful for your decisions.

I was invited to visit the dujardin museum in krefeld, documenting the legacy of alcohol manufacturing. It has been a nice opportunity but typical for me theses days, finding myself in situations asking myself how they fit into the whole narration. all these puzzle pieces take time you might probably need to get yourself back on the track leading to the lighthouse. what the hell is my lighthouse? let´s have a drink instead.

going to the museum folkwang is always like a visit in church for me, helping to calm down and a great place to escape from the outside world. I managed to visit the current show ‘der montierte mensch’ with kent granyon, which is just another ritual while I missed so many of my annual rituals. however, I have a strong fascination for avery k. singer, even when I never know if I like or dislike her work while being believed to surf on the wave of post-internet hype. additionally, the gossip of high class gallerists trying to seduce her to join her cadre of represented artists makes it all pretty hilarious. I cannot deny my interest in post internet art, hype developments or even gossip. It is entertaining anyway, isn´t it?

a few weeks ago an artist and experimental film maker called me and asked for me to contribute music to one of his films. the whole thing was wired enough to trigger my interest. i sat down and collected some ambient and wired record of tides tracks but he was looking for something else. as we were not able to agree on my payment and it became obvious that he was looking for foley or mickeymousing sounds, we decided not to do it together. I remembered my collaboration with matthias danberg. we are still both surprised by the simplicity of our collaboration. I still believe it was based upon the fact that we trusted in the skills of the other while teaming up playing on different positions. collaborations can be easy if you set them up like this. also it is good if you are friends.

I was rendering frames for months now for a one-minute-sequence of a kiss given from one scanned figure to the other. the rendering process had been large, the result is okay but less exiting than expected. however, ‘the kiss’ will come up in the portfolio in 2020.

a new digital material made me create this strange monster. I could be an animal from the deep sea or maybe a realistic picture of ‘the beast with billion backs’ as seen in the second futurama movie. however I am working on an animated sequence which will hopefully show up in the multiverse solo show.

back in 2015 our friends from kelbassas panoptikum created a labyrinth as well as many sculptures for the ‘extraschicht’ in summer. see 2015-06-23 adopting an alien plant labyrinth leftover | entry by sven. after the festival numerous sculptures were meant to be destroyed, michaela spontaneously rescued the big alien plant which was later called audrey. the piece ended up in our living room, appearing impressive and pretty scary. detlef kelbassa showed up to fix little pieces. after some changes we had to put it outside after consulting kelbassas panoptikum. the weather destroyed the piece slowly, the birds also helped a lot. as the piece became more and more a danger for the fauna, we had to destroy the piece. fortunately there is still enough panoptikum in the collection.

when I put the picture of me in an apartment in whitstable online I received some feedback telling that it looks like a cover for a rap artists. however, adding some fake instagram filter to it made it even more look hip. over the years (especially when doing sports) if have developed a true interest in hip hop and rap music (how unbelievable in my twenties) so I had been working on a compilation for years now. the rap cover will get some music soon, I will put out my ‘thug life’ mixtape podcast soon, it will be available from the /CAMP. make sure to get access, this is the extra power for every exercise or party!

record of tides will be back soon, I am working on stuff: a new audio visual set will be performed soon. the official announcement is supposed to come up soon, up to now only some soft facts for your schedule: duisburg, february 8. It is supposed to be wild. and fun. see you there!

seeya´ll in 2020!

2019-12-13 simple-minded parrot in a dead end pivot | entry by sven

the topics of the blog appear to come up in circles, I find myself discussing the same issues again and again. I am just a simple-minded parrot screaming the same phrases over and over again, questioning who has taught me these phrases and why I keep repeating them instead of flying away… but this is not about redundancy, there is a new layer and cognition in it every time. I am looking back to a year of problems and sorrow but also of ambition and effort to make a change, for myself and others. realizing that I need more time for myself and the people meaning something to me made me spend more time in work hope it would become less. what a naïve idea. I feel like an idiot, once again.

sometimes people tell me that I am depressive, actually I have never before been more convinced to be mentally sane. the doctor might be offing pills but this does not mean that you are sick. it is always fighting symptoms while accepting side effects. I am sensitive to the world, especially to the part that is surrounding me. I feel a certain sense of unfairness in many things. I am no longer complaining about the art scene, I am complaining about the common sense of exploitation, the worshipping of the golden calf (or as I like to say: the most powerful force in the universe is known to be profit) willing to sacrifice everything, to buy and take pills that make you accept the waste of your time. as I work with numerous students, trainees and colleagues that I feel deeply responsible for, I am trying to bring up values like self-awareness, responsibility, seriousness and fun next to social behaviour. I have to accept that I am teaching values that I do no longer experience for myself. this is making me a liar technically, as I am anticipating a world which does no longer exist. from a professional view, I am the best me for 20 years, I can lead my potential into productivity and cognition to others, even as an artist I am on a good way being happy with what I can do. In the end I just feel like a bulb in the chandelier told to shine brighter every time. modern economy does not define general aims, it just expands the process. the product is secondary as long as it more of it. the result must be what we are starting to face recently. it is getting dark as more and more bulbs are burning through.

and here is a little graphic illustrating the phenomenon of the dead end pivot, in image spinning in my head for longer now. imagine yourself in the middle of the pivot and you can choose which way to go. you might choose between, job, family, hobby, art, drugs, thrill… whatever. the dead end pivot gives you all options but you will never go far. every decision leads you into nothing, so you will return to focus on another aspect, which once again is a dead end. you can do again and again, frustration guaranteed. how to get out of it? I have created a graphic solution that I will come up with later, also I have to turn this abstract solution into something usable in life. for the meantime, think about the dead end pivot in you life. what is your strategy?

I returned to the university of wuppertal for professional reasons. the last time I visited this place ten years ago for the exhibition of design students. (see 2009-04-02 datamilch on KD09, designing the future | entry by sven). I always wanted to return for these annual showings, but no-one ever informed my about them. however, now I was meeting with design professors and heads of media design department. it was amazing. within a circle of highly educated and qualified people there was a lot of discussion on the digital future in teaching. even if this group of experts knew what they were talking about, and as every one was able to add a new layer of cognition to the issue it was impossible to merge the lines. as blogger and artist I am also more interested in questions than in answers but when it comes to teaching and working on the future of people we should be very aware and sure in what we do to them.

I went to kronenburg for a meeting. the place was formally known as the ‘hermann göring meisterschule’ (no kidding) and is now place for seminar work. I have been working with colleagues on stuff that did not really had relevance for my professional field, I hope it is for them. to be honest, everyone was waiting for the night.

a little pile of snow set in the hilly landscape of kronenburg. I had to take a picture; it might hopefully be the only snow to see this year.

some beer and booze in the fireplace chamber. well, these informal meetings are free time and work at the same time. and it is strange that alcohol is a common drug in our society. there are contradictions everywhere. also I retuned home totally stressed after a visit of a chicken nugget factory and a conference. ready for some freaking out and some sleep, actually there was not enough time for one of it. the picture of my feet next to the fireplace remains. honestly it was a nice moment surrounded by work and stress.

in order to meet grischo schlüsi at his birthday I ended up on an eva kurowski gig. even if everyone told me that she is pretty famous I did not know her. her mix of jazz and funny german vocals would not be my first choice but was surprisingly convincing. I had a great time on a jazz gig and will hopefully see her live again. also I found myself singing ‘girl from ipanema’ afterwards quite often.

michaela was part of the sven piayda studio office team but is now heading for a new job. surprisingly she ended up in stuttgart for a training on studio photography. however, she is niw holding a certificate for qualified reference, let’s see if we can use her new skills…

you never know who is watching, you do not even know where. well, sometimes I receive people sending these screenshots, you feel stalked and humbled at the same time. however, keep ’em coming.

I found this little poster in the dark on the way for a steak. (yes, I’m still not vegan, although my post-humanistic ideas would force me to). we have a true fascination for bouncing castles, even if we usually never use any. nevertheless it is a perfect symbol for childish joy and absence of sorrow. bouncing appears as ultimate way of actually living. the poster advertisement dropped on the ground in cold rain appears like a promise that cannot be kept or the good time that is already over.

studio work: I am still processing pictures I have taken in luxembourg this summer. It is an amazing place and there will be amazing tableaus. I am still overwhelmed. this short stay in luxembourg has a long echo, it feels like the while summer…

karla köhler is recently presenting our new collaborations next to her own work in her open studio in nuremberg. we are having great fun here, collaboration has never before been so easy and impressive.

rick sanchez at SG1? you might have realized my fascination for rick and morty, now they have also made it into my instagram story documenting the ‘if and only if’ show. well, I think these weird figures fit perfectly into the show, as I am drafting upcoming solo shows recently, we are half way to the multiverse oriented shows.

the studio is to work on ‘if and only if’, the show to open november 11 at SG1 in duisburg. you have the chance to access the reader via /CAMP (there won´t be catalogue but a reader helping you to get the concept of the exhibited works…). plus there are some further shows and festivals to be prepared. cross you fingers.

2019-11-05 arthur fleck in the age of post-humanism | entry by sven

there is a bunch of things I am dealing with recently, sometimes one thing is echoing in you head while you are stumbling into the next. two weeks ago I decided to spend my birthday instead of having a party by visiting the eija-liisa ahtila show at lehmbruck museum in duisburg. (I hope not to miss the artist talk on november 9…) the show title plays with terms like sculpture and post-humanism and feels a little bit misleading and even like a misfit. however, I experienced having a chimp arm (see picture above) witch was meant to give me more sympathy to a being of another species.

athila is a fantastic artist, her video work using multiple screening projections for the same story is immersive and pushing the medium forward, also you can watch it again and again while finding new layers in the work. the term of post-humanism appeared too big somehow anyway, big enough to leave an echo in my heat to do some research. the term is used for two things: the future (human) being like cyborgs and self-aware artificial intelligences on the one hand and the idea of spreading the concept of acting the way you want to treated on other species. well, the future appears intellectual, we are definitely at the next step of evolution, giving birth to post human species while feeling no longer superior to other forms of life. the individual seems to be in danger to get lost, however you should not take evolution to personal, all the atoms you are made of are borrowed anyway.

let´s make a cut here. on helloween we managed to get to cinema again to see joaquin phoenix as joker. I guess watching a movie with joaqiun phoenix on helloween is a tradition now as I started it years ago with a dvd of ‘her’ while waiting (equipped with booze and axe) for the kids to ring. I do not have a big fascination for comic characters and I think it is stupid to like a figure for being crazy, this is a concept made for a pubescent audience only. todd phillips ‘joker’ uses the dc franchise and key frame fan service to tell a great story which tells a lot of our time. the movie is as great as everyone says, but that is not what I want to talk about. the joker becomes a symbol for nihilism and the loss of values. someone called arthur fleck who never really had a chance gives his best to become better than he is in many ways. when his hopes and believes fall apart and he realizes that nothing matters, everything falls apart. his own life doesn’t matter so everyone’s life does not matter. as he is not the only one who feels disconnected from any chance and any other human being he becomes figurehead for a violent movement against the rich, against the police and against the society. the joker is the cool version of michael douglas in ‘falling down’, he is seductive and like a messiah opening paths out of the passive desperation. in the end he is just sick and violent fascist giving the most flat answers to the issues around him. his way out is destructive rebellion. even if we have much sympathy for this devil, he cannot be a role model, he is drafted as tricky antagonist, not evil in the first place but desperate enough to turn down every standard.

I was thinking about our days, a gap between the poor and the rich, more and more mentally ill people around, frustration ending up in yellow west or alt-right demonstrations and fascist elections. there is a lot of potential for violence and flat solutions. going back to the idea of post-humanism I have to say that it is strange to bring these developments together. having deep frustration and hate of others on one side and the idea common rights for all species and leap in evolution to the next level.

I feel that the term of mankind or society does not seem to fit anymore; this is what I want to call a schism. the split is big enough to have movements going into opposite directions. these things could also take place on different planets. so what can we do with it?

I know that I am a privileged and privileged people always look like never having any problems. I am am still frustrated concerning a bunch of things and I have been running into dead ends again and again no matter how far I have come and will come. I still have solution fantasies with abstruse violence but this is just another dead end. the only way is to keep trying independent of any conceptual believe. jesus christ´s idea of equal treatment may be god-given, emanuel kant´s idea is developed from an intellectual point of view. you can follow these ideas but disbelieve must not lead to executed nihilism. if you are interested in the multiverse theory you might have made your peace with the assumption that everything has happened in every variation before and it also will in the future, also everything happens in every variation now in countless parallel universes generating the same or different scenarios. however, you have to realize that you are nothing special and you are not unique. there is no coincidence, just one version of every possible version that has or will happen. do not take it personal, you simply do not matter to the multiverse. so if there is nothing beyond and everything does not matter, all we have is one another. you may have sympathy for the rich, for the sick and for the chimp.

back to eija-liisa ahtila: her work is actually brilliant while being transparent in production, simply symbolic in narration and (what I like to call it) mirroring the medium. this is more than a recommendation and a must see for everyone who is into cinema!

a sculpture being fascinating and familiar is the construction by kenneth snelson. it is impressive to experience yourself watching the construction without believing its statics. if you are into this one, check the needle tower in the kröller-müller-museum-park in otterlo.

the lembruck museum parallelly displays some big names, a video sculpture by julian opie in front of the museum and a nicolai´s spinning ton with holes to generate certain flickering frequencies to stimulate your brain. this piece did not work for me, nevertheless, I was in need to check his solo show at k21 in düsseldorf.

I was wondering if it would make sense for me to check the carsten nicolai show at k21. I knew some of his works and I liked the apparati without understanding what it was all about. entering the exhibition was overwhelming: sound, laser and op art elements tease your senses. you are impressed first of all. checking the works you have to read a lot. reading is not a problem for me in this context but after a while you get tired of explaining. nicolai presents machines and scientific set-up displaying scientific phenomena but you start asking yourself where he wants to go and what might be his intention or message he wants to deliver. do you need all these lasers, radioactive atoms, jellyfishes and reversed mounted screens to display – well, to display what?

the seductive aesthetic of an old tape delay or echo machine has a hypnotic power. nicolai presents (echo machine inspired) wall pieces and even the tape delay with its reflection. I know this is a bad game and not fair to say so but I have seen better before: back in 2011 I discovered laurent montaron’s ‘melancholia’ at mudam luxembourg, a running tape delay mounted into the wall. I do not want to say the one piece is better because I have seen it before, but it is better because his work changed my way of looking at things and my language as an artist. he was exploring the world and lay open new layers. nicolai´s show misses to pass on a message among the quotation of context of science and culture. nevertheless, the carsten nicolai show at k21 is worth the visit, impressive, hypnotic and also entertaining. even the machines impress a lot. I was simply looking for something beyond.

when I was visiting the show I was thinking about my own work. michaela announced to have seen some parallels, even in titles. when I do stuff there is usually also a lot to read and I try to create larger ideas by combining my works like puzzle pieces. I was wondering if my audience is able to read my work properly or even gets the connection using the escorting text. I wonder if people visit my stuff without realizing what it is all about, would it be enough for me if they simply like it? would it be okay for them if they simply like it? I only hope they get the notion that there is more in it, something beyond, a certain truth that is in need to be discovered. Is a show only entertainment or also education? can it be both?

I drove home from a conference in beautiful autumn light. it looks like ‘lord of the rings’ or luxembourg but it is ratingen actually. enjoy!.

an autumn afternoon I have spend in the gruga with my mother. flamingos and red leaves and even many more strange birds.

our short trim to the westruper heide made us witness some fly agarics. (i guess they are, probably only similar looking ones)

also I had the chance to visit the opening of ‘das beseelte ding’ an exhibition of design students from essen at museum folkwang. surprisingly this show is a great one and worth visiting: from cinemagraph photography, to 3d-printing automation to a cute, interactive robot. recommended!

in the making...

update 2019-11-08: flashback humour: i did not spend much time this year in luxembourg but it was truly intense making it feel like months. so here is another beatiful swing-by snapshot of the mudam. the kirchberg is a perfect place to be. soon again, hopefully!

update 2019-11-08: yet another snapshot of me examining the beach during a daily beautiful sunset in whitsable. what you cannot see in this lighnige are are oyster farms in the shore. breeding oysters is big business here and i did not try a single one, which i haven´t regret yet. i could need a lobster or a fish, a beer and a sunset right now.

2019-10-19 the devil drives a sports utility vehicle | entry by sven

we are living in emotional times, things come up quickly and massive, obviously to vanish even faster. recently we are facing a politically interested youth taking care of the ecologic system in times of climate change. you may question the seriousness and depth of this movement, but there is nothing wrong with its original intention. I guess I am already part of a generation that feels strange when the younger ones tell us what to do while having no idea where their own lifestyle come from. so it is simple to image a stereotype of a spoiled child being driven to a ‘fridays for future’ demonstration in their parents´suv. and here the whole idea of thinking about tomorrow falls apart, all credibility is gone. it appears obvious that only rich and egoistic people have sports utility vehicles, to be well protected with luxury offering best protection for their kids while seriously threaten all other kids.

actually, things are never that easy. let´s go back in time: long before suv cars become trend I was into off-roaders. I was fascinated by the roughness and power and the appearance of being different while being able to go where no road limits your options. at this time the range of off-roaders was quite limited, the cars were not to expensive, the lada niva seemed to be even a quite cheap option. the reason I did never have an off-roader was to think about my needs and my lifestyle. I have to travel on motorways most of the time, it makes sense to be aerodynamic, to have space for luggage and passengers, to have music and that´s it. there was no need for a jeep or something like that. the car industry must have had an eye on people like me who are looking for an off-roader but actually are wanting a limousine. the result was a fleet (or flood) of sports utility vehicles, cars that appear quite too large and not appropriate for off road experience. all these models seem to have started from this idea of crossing over the idea of being unique to a luxurious tank for fighting all the other luxurious tanks in the urban jungle. the car has become a status symbol for richness, but also for protection of the self and the ignorance of the others. I cannot say that this bad image is true, but it is there anyway.

when michaela had to travel to stuttgart for professional reasons the company organized a hired car. in advance we made jokes about it and getting offered a suv (michaela is even more critic on suv’s than me) and bingo: she was offered a seat taracco. indeed, she reported to have felt save and comfortable but also strange to be alone in a car that was made to take seven people. when we had the car the weekend afterwards we took a trip to the more sophisticated area of the ruhr area which made us feel like a persiflage of everyone taking the upper class lifestyle too serious.

well, the problem with bad images of things or symbols for decadence is always the point of view and much prejudice. sports utility vehicles are believed to be more thirsty than other cars and in crash situations more lethal for others. the board computer tells that the consumption is not higher than in other cars, but who would believe the car industry which is known for bending data wherever it is possible. in fact oversized cars have higher consumption and emission compared to smaller cars. but what is oversized? this question can only be answered by the individual – but what if the individual decision affects everyone else? also it is also possible to kill people with a small car, even a small car weights a ton. it is hard to find evidence for its evilness and probably this is not the point. the big cars have become a symbol for a problem in society, the explicit compartmentalisation and also demonstrated ignorance concerning the issues of others. a prohibition of suv´s will not be the answer, and it is solving no problem.
we have to look at the bigger picture. electric cars may be one puzzle piece in fighting climate change but simply replacing all cars and engines is horribly naïve. so where does the electric power come from? and where do the materials for electric cars come from? fairphone and shiftphone have proven that it is impossible to produce a smartphone without child labour or deals with rouge nations. what does this mean to make a car? (and there is no fair produced electric car recently, by the way…)
we should question our believe of standards concerning anticipated mobile flexibility and working hours. we have to reduce all the traffic going on instead of exchanging the growing amount of vehicles. in our modern time of digital devices and home office options, do you really need to travel five days a week to another city for work? is the only way to relax to fly to a warm county far away? how can we optimize and reduce traveling and our time of work and recreation? maybe fighting climate change is not a question of going without something, maybe it is an option to gain benefit for everyone. it is not about giving it is also about receiving. you simply have to look at the bigger picture. the suv is only in your head.

however, I am not pointing my finger on anyone, I am part of the problem, even without a suv. I have to question my lifestyle and everyday decisions concerning consumption and driving around. like everyone else I do not believe in relinquishment but in alternative, so lets find alternatives for all these every day routines we never dare to question. may saving the environment is just a side effect of developing a better way to live…

a picture of the last day of summer, a sunny sunday in september in the garden. I know I am lucky, when the day looks like this, you do not need to leave home.

a found ‘sculpture’ in a park in mülheim. I do not know what the original piece looked like or was all about but I was fascinated by the erased body which only left the feet behind. I do not know if this was an act of vandalism, but the feet only made it still a powerful sculpture. just like jeff koon´s ‘gazing ball’ which looked much more interesting after it had been accidentally crushed by a visitor.

october 3rd was great to visit the gruga again to celebrate autumn. however, there was the raptor show again. it is funny, I have missed it for years and now I am joining every raptor show half accidentally. the weather was wet and strange, rain and sun at the same time made this show even more surreal.

we went back to zeeland, well, this is my forth time this year, probably my personal record. this a moment with sunny weather in the beach bar, one of only a few sunny moments.

I am desperately bound to rituals, I think it is crazy and I am annoyed of myself but I cannot break out. so here is the current mussels picture. perfect at piet hein, recommended.

zoutelande has become our favourite place in zeeland (not only for offering ‘crispy garnalen’), even if it becomes more and more touristic. the people there take care to offer always something, after the bouncing parcours in summer and now a perfectly timed and dramatized fireworks show. we have been irritated by the extreme lightness and the trash it brought up to be left to the beach. I remember the gruga celebration which skipped the fireworks of a laser show because of ecologic reasons. now I have understood why.

and this is me while checking out: fully packed and dressed like an arctic scientist while being always paranoid about forgetting something in the room. you´ll get used to it.

a student designed poster featuring a collage of obama eating to remind the other students not to eat at the computer in the computer equipped rooms. it´s no fun to sit in someone else´s mess. however, whenever I am in that room I have to laugh out loud, obama eating is pure fun to me, no one really looks good while eating, so why are most of the dates organized around a dinner!? my favourite one is obamas happy and satisfied expression while drinking.

looking at this collage makes me less hungry. to whoever having made this: you made my day, actually some of 'em!

in the making...

2019-09-03 weird summer episodes | entry by sven

this summer feels like a layer cake again. in the shadow of sorrow are still some weird and funny episodes. to grow up probably means to feel happy only in a very short slots of time. also, looking back offers a lot of opportunity to feel old.
there are great moments everywhere and unexpected. I often feel like closing the blog as i´m realizing my on irrelevance for the world and what I would have to tell it plus it would be a an opportunity to fight the narcissism which covers all the despair. on the other hand it helps me to remember and to appreciate the great moments. it is like instagram for myself, I am convincing myself of the great time I obviously have. so here is a lot of fun, actually you cannot see the space in between. we all have issues and so have to tread us this way. at least we have one another and we´re all screwed anyway.

let’s just see what has been collected and is in need to be put on the list of worthy memories.

albert hammond came to mülheim to perform along the rattles and marmalade on an august summer night. I guess I would never have bought tickets for a senior’s event like this one but I have to admit that I am a hammond fan since I watched a concert at night on arte. I remember myself questioning why this old guy is covering top 40 hits from the eighties before realizing that he has written all of them. he made a big impression. however, michi and me decided to have a burger instead and sneak around the closed off festival area in the park to see if we could hear or see something. surprisingly we found a barrier high enough to roll in below it without any security guy witnessing. we stepped in, a security guy must have got an idea of what we did but without daring to ask. we would not have had a good lie anyway. we vanished in the crowd and ended on the tiny hill watching the second half of the hammond show with all the super hits. it was great and exiting, the music and our action. I promise this was the only illegal thing I did in ten years. let´s keep this secret.

before we entered the show, I witnessed a penrose triangle in the gardens around the park. you might know my fascination for it and it was like a weird sign to find it there. It might teach you how little you know about the world caused by your limited perception.

more music: this summer I have attended the freilichtbühne in mülheim quite regularly, mostly alone but even with friends. I have witnessed to many great musicians performing and a half interested audience. performers have a fascination on me, whenever I see them playing id like to start a rock band again, but if watch it long enough you always see how invidious the whole thing is. being a musician is tough and the audience does not care anyway. even if they love you during the show, everything is forgotten and irrelevant after the last note is played.

sounds venlo, the greatest record store around is celebrating its 35 anniversary. dennis (aka dj kent granyon) and me managed it to step by to spend some money on records and fried stuff. without noticing, we must have spent about ninety minutes in the store touching everything they have to offer. I won´t tell how much money we left there but it is a great opportunity to expand my aphex twin collection.

we did this kind of trip before when ‘syro’ came out. we had a great time and decided to do this quickly again. well, that was five years ago.

the museum folkwang was supposed to be visited more frequently this summer. however, they have rearranged their collection. mostly structured along the motifs, this arranging appears flat but is familiar to us from dutch museums. some arrangements work better, others don’t. plus: the museum is taking care of the history of their pieces, it has to checked if works are or oar not looted art, so some of them might vanish from the collection.

wow, what´s happening with the tree. which kind of bird would shake it that way. wait, another part is shaking… is this tree dancing? yes it is. william forsythe (the artist and choreographer who also did the video wall in the foyer which makes you twist in time) install little devices on the trees which make them dance to music we cannot hear. a moment that might remember you of a video work by david claerbout, but this is actually happening!

duisburg has a fish restaurant looking back on a 180 years family history called ‘das letzte haus am platz’. the restaurant is known for its quality and also quantity they offer. also it is placed next to a large chimney making it pretty surreal. additionally the animals running around you make it even more an adventure. we visited it with friends two years ago and returned with some more friends. plus: after all this eating you can go for a walk to the ferry at the rhine giving a dutch feeling far way from the netherlands. I have to go back to the netherlands…

before work starts I was invited to spend the day with colleagues at the elbsee in düsseldorf. dietmar and me captured a pedalo to relax on the lake. he delivered a funny panorama shot of me in the style of a panorama shot he did of me back in 2016 in liege, begium. so this is another opportunity to feel old. time just rushes by.

actaually we wanted to go to the chemical show of ferdi schüth at the freilichtbühne. unfortunately the event was so overcrowded that the police closed the whole thing down and did not let us it because it was already full. (the loveparade disaster still has an echo on events…) we went back to the little port at the promenade to listen to tschaichowski (serenade for strings(!)) and mozart. it was great, once again, all musicians are treated with the same admiration followed by ignorance. however, thrilling and inspiring.

another funny episode: my mobile rang with a curator of a museum calling. I have applied for a museum show and was waiting for an answer. instead I was told that someone had left the jury so I was chosen to join the jury. I only would have to withdraw my application and spend the afternoon with the museum staff. before I could show my irritation it was clear that I could not join the jury due schedule difficulties. it is totally nuts: it is like getting the offer to work more but getting less money. I could not resist to give the curator an advice I have taken from walter white (yes, heisenberg): if you want to make a deal you must have something to offer. it is strange, I never demand much, but getting less than nothing is really leaving me inactive and speechless. also, this teaches you how juries (and museums) work: maybe your work is not chosen for the show but you can decide who is… plus: what is my qualification here? giving up my own ambition and being flexible anyway? the whole thing leaves me speechless. I cannot take the scene serious anymore, less and less.
(by the way, the picture above is chosen randomly and is not giving a clue who I am talking about)

over the last months I have started to watch ‘rick and morty’ on behalf of numerous friends. after being sceptical I developed a huge fascination on the figures and the complex storytelling taking things to the next level. one of my absolute favourite episodes is the one with mr meeseeks (‘meeseeks and destroy’). there are wired things going on anyway, but you see how self-torturing issues can be solved easily and how quickly simple things get out of control to end in lethal chaos. you´ll also find out what makes a good adventure and how to handle the post mortem memory of a great leader who turns out to be child molester – here is just one option to handle it.
the whole show probably pushes nihilism, everything happens again and again in parallel universes, in past and future and even right now. nothing really matters and nothing means anything. but even rick sanchez tells his daughter that she matters to him for reasons he cannot explain himself and even he starts praying in the few moments he looses control. obviously things are not that simple in this universe but he offers just another point of view for a bigger picture to be arranged by yourself. let´s close the a mr meeseeks quote: ‘existence is pain.’

update 2019-09-07: here is a funny picture of ray harms and myself taken at werdener wiesn open air by rebecca gottschick. raimond did not perform for the open air but usually performs with the stage name 'raum für notizen'. we talked about opportunities for making our own festivals and parties for electronic music far apart from techno. i cannot really remember how it happened that the picture was taken but it is a proof for a great day anyway.

soundcloud.com/user-234109975-789495067

update 2019-09-17: after last year´s success of the yard sale we have tried to do it once again. this year we did not have honey to offer but a lots of other stuff from bicycles to amplifieres, seats to tv screens... and it was once again a great opportunity to sell art. actually it was a little less crowded than the year before but it is always great to spend time with friends in front of the house. see you next year!?

2019-08-21 rocks of mullerthal & cats of luxembourg | entry by sven

and here is another story from luxembourg, we did not stay that long actually, but only a few days are enough for three entries in the journal. over our last trips we have developed another ritual: visiting mullerthal before going back to germany. the mullerthal is a quite rural and natural area coined by woods, the schiessentümpel and rocks. I was not aware how big these rocks can be, but we found these ones accidently. you walk around and try to get on them and feel claustrophobia in between them while following given paths. however, this was funny trip to an unexpected place.

climbing a mountain is easy if there are stairs so here I am. there is a flag on the top so this must be the place.

whenever we are in the pfaffenthal there is a black cat appearing, meowing like a baby and being not sure if cuddling is requested or not. during the jazz and blues rally this white beauty appeared near the clausen, also quite loud meowing, running around without a master plan realizable… however, cats are for everyone, they need to be cuddled.

downtown is a café with long queue of people in front of it. well, actually they are not interested in tea or coffee, next to people there are about 15 cats in the room, drowsing or being cuddled by the customers. we had to get in of course. as you see, the cats are going everywhere and they are all pretty relaxed in the trouble. I don´t know if this concept convinces me but it is worth the experience.

back home we he had fri(e)da (I never know how to write her name properly and she would not tell) as guest for two weeks. she joined me on my couch with my broken leg back in summer 2017.

i´ve been to museum folkwang again to check out the newly arranged collection. this piece has become quite quickly a favourite: jim dines: 'two thieves, one liar'. more soon! (this is also calssified as 'cat content', enjoy!)

2019-08-14 free from giddiness within the pfaffenthal mobility | entry by sven
going to and being in luxembourg is always true fun and it is already a place we are familiar with. whenever you look down on the city from kirchberg, you think that these area large distances, actually they are not. you´ll quickly find out that you can reach everything by foot. the only tiring thing is the constant up and down. (this is no complaining, it make sthe whole thing so beautiful). however the people from luxembourg must have had the same thought and came up with some – let´s say ‘vehicles’ – to make going through the pfaffenthal more pleasant. and you have to go through this valley when you go down from kirchberg down to the city. however, you have to be free from giddiness, so the public local traffic turns into a funfair.

the pfaffenthal lift is already a classic, linking the 65 meters height in just a few seconds and delivering a glass floor view point for the brave selfie-takers. I cannot get enough of it. plus: we joined the jazz an bues rally placing bands all over the pfaffenthal and clausen. this is another iconic view on the lift. past and future seem to coexist here.

before you can go up via lift you have to come down from kirchberg via funicular. unfortunately it is not easy to photograph, we´ll have some videos soon, hopefully. the four cars on two tracks link the kirchberg plateau with the train station in the valley within a few seconds. useful and funny- and free.

if you just need to pass the pfaffenthal you can do this by foot in just a few minutes, if you want to try something new you can take the self-driving shuttle linking the train station with the lift. well, self-driving is a big word. the shuttle has a human operator taking care of it´s actions or helps u-turning via game controller. plus you have to put on seatbelts because the shuttle breaks suddenly when cars appear in front of the slow shuttle after overtaking. well, this future technology works but is not convincing. you can do this for the fun of it. future is here.

another opportunity to test your giddiness is the renovated pont adoplhe. you might remember us taking webcam selfies next to the interim bridge which has been constructed for the renovation period. now pond adolphe is open again and has a great new feature: a second hanging bridge under itself to go (or ride by bike) through the arches. here you´ll have a better view on the grund. maybe this is the key to public and local traffic issues. why can´t it be fun? all these lifts, funiculars, ai-shuttles and bridges are fun to take. I know it is no good idea to take an idea from somewhere and pull in on something else, but this can truly be taken as inspiration.

a bonus picture: a beautiful view on pont adolphe from casino luxembourg.

yet another picture of the jazz and blues rally at the clause entry. here people know how to party, well, more or less, but it is a good place to be.

2019-08-02 back to mudam, again and again and again | entry by sven
writing about my fascination of the mudam in luxembourg is perfect redundancy, I must have written about every show I visited there, about breakfast with friends is was invited to and given free tickets. actually there is nothing new to tell but another great episode. the mudam made shows that really changed my view on things, as an artist and as a human being (while delivering excitement beyond fun), this is 100% of what I want when it comes to art. you get to know about the blockbusters (jeff wall) and go there, but sometimes you simply have the time and go there and you will probably never be disappointed…

let’s start with my new discovery. danh vo shows only three pieces of sculptural work. it appears boring and parenthetic at first glance but if you take a closer look and give time to unfold you´ll be thrilled. the randomly arranged wood pieces on the floor need to be discovered, actually you can find broken pieces of a crucifix jesus among the dead wood. is all the christian iconography sentenced to fall apart like every organic matter in the universe? and what might it tell about the transcendental idea behind it?

the other piece which perfectly triggered me is looks like a pretty cheap assembly of a wooden saint´s head (maria?) and the broken marble feet of a cherub. the piece also looks parenthetic and quickly assembled at first, but it is a great arrangement. the work is called (and I simply quote) ‘your mother sucks cocks in hell’. I am not sure if danh vo has a great sense of rude humour or is he is really pissed of christianity and it´s iconography. however, his work creates tension in material and concept.

latoya ruby frazier is a familiar name for me as I have seen some of her works back then at museum folkwang. her work is honest, documenting her family and herself in a post-industrial area and era in the usa.

bert theis was a name which was not very familiar to me. actually his work has been familiar to be for years. he created the sauna space next to the philharmonic building on kirchberg plateau, the beautiful tilted benches of the mudam and further stageesque public sculptures creating space to relax for the people. the retrospective was complex in conception, sometimes in questioning the image, work and cognition the way I try to it, but in a different way. so it was really tricky to take pictures of the show, many exhibited pieces were drafts or documentary photos you cannot really understand without some escorting text. however, this picture above looks funny anyway: put you head in a box and dive into a virtual exhibition by looking through door spies.

this piece really fascinated me: headphones made from shells appear like a flat joke. as soon as you put them on, you actually hear the typical shell noise mistaken for the sea shore but actually the sound of your own blood rushing through your ears. however, this peace makes you step out of reality for a moment, the sand below you feet helps a lot (see last blog entry).

the white cylinder is a space for one person to join alone to listen to a dronesque sound piece. I was sitting in it for a while drifting away with the humming and sometimes beatesque pumping. I thought about my own sound pieces I want to bring into exhibition spaces and felt encouraged.
back to the ritual: having a rivella at the mudam café is ritual and opportunity for your brain to sort and save all the impressions you have been given.

the other exhibition space we have to assemble regularly is the casino luxembourg. this place offers free entry recently and is compared to mudam a little bit younger and maybe experimental. this years show was ‘I dreamed I was a house’ dealing with the meaning of different rooms in a house and their meaning in psychoanalysis. the whole thing did not convince us as concept text and the installations did not really fit together. my favourite wired and scary installation was the one from anna hulacová, michaela discliked it, but I guess I got the innuendos of parents, their faceless children and the harvesting machines among them. a family is just a company or simply hell.

back in germany I visited the opening of klaus jost ‘verloren om detal’ at SG1 in duisburg. I wrote about klaus and his work back in 2012 already focussing on his sculptural work (2012-04-07 EGGXPO feature: klaus jost's humour beyond the rust | entry by sven). klaus has already shifted his main interest from sculpture making to photography. if you talk about photography in his case it is not just taking pictures, it is about the most précised way to transferring reality into a picture. people visiting shows are ususlly fascinated by the technical aspect, and it is impressing here: the pictures of multi-coloured bugs are based upon multiple photographs taken from the same motive. Up to 100 pictures of the prepared bugs are taken by a robotic set-up delivering different layers of focus in a small field of depth to be rendered into a perfectly focussed and sharp picture. the same technique is used to portrait the cut edges of books creating pretty abstract images. here the concept comes in, being inspired by bourgeois’ library, nolan´s ‘intastallar’ and the monkey theorem. while the big photos deliver photographs giving more information than in reality in size in sharpness, the book pictures appear like a closed door. you have a closed look to it, but you cannot consume the content of the book. you can only enjoy the surface of the container (as often) without getting through to the point. klaus jost´s technical precision often makes you forget his great conceptional approach, keeping the whole thing transparent and enigmatic enough to fascinate for long time. this is what I want to see in museums.

jost-foto.de

another discovery I need to pass on is sanne de haan. during my last visit of huntenkunst in may I once again experienced a lot of great but always commercial art offered for sale. well, it´s an art fair and this is what they are made for. among the different booths a group of younger dutch artists created their own combination of exhibition booths presenting the more contemporary and maybe futuristic way of creating art today using digital devices as well as unusual disciplines. sanne de haans´s work made an impression. the usage if embroidery is surprising but also familiar if you have been to some art fairs before. nevertheless, the work is not set upon the surprising medium, making people stop, stare and maybe laugh. the quality of her approach lies between the tension of the old-fashioned medium of a technique no-one would usually put on the wall anymore and the twist with the motif which seems to be non-fitting, de-arranged and usually destroying the safe and simple world embroidery works usually delivers. in her embroidery work the beautiful girl in the oat field has a machine gun, the gipsy woman finds her face pixeled and deep in the woods no virgin mary but a giant vagina appears to be worshipped. everything is twisted, questioned, post-modernized and made fun of – what can you believe in living in the post internet age? is there still something like beauty, religion or a simple world? all simple answers to the all the questions you come up with have disappeared, sanne denies giving you the flat version of what you want to believe by mashing it up with today’s issues. my favourite piece is (next to all of the works of this series) the black dancer. somehow she appears like a practicing ballerina (making me think of degas´ ‘figue of a ballerina’) mixed up with giger´s alien, seductive and threatening at the same time. I could think of a dark corridor to place the piece giving you shivers every time you pass by but also giving you a smile if you dare to stop and take a closer look.

sanne de haan is an artist for your watchlist. check out her embroidery works next to further thrilling series as presented on her website.

2019-08-01 let´s just go to the beach club (at kirchberg plateau) | entry by sven
it´s a running gag I’m telling for years that I want to go to the beach club (actually we usually pronounce it ‘bitch club’ to make it more abstruse and funny). I guess it visited the beach club at baldeney lake more than a decade ago and I felt pretty wrong there, also unable to relax the way you are supposed to do there… however, when we retuned to luxembourg again I discovered the beach club at the melia hotel on kirchberg and it triggered my needs immediately. well, actually it was just some sand with some canvas chairs and a bar tender but that was more than enough for me.

the day we arrived was very hot, we walked a lot and my feet were done. after the first checking of the city and a kumpir potato I was really looking forward to put on my flip-flops for ultimate time-off and relaxing. and finally, I went to the beach club alone putting my naked feet in the cool sand. escorted with a local beer you simply sit there and stare into the trees hiding the mudam behind it (see above). a perfect place which appears constructed like a movie set but honest and familiar at the same time.

i like to visit these places a lone. when I was younger I was always wondering if people might consider me a someone suffering on his solitude which would lead to avoid contacting even more… when you are in luxembourg, people are usually friendly but you (and they) never know what language the other guy might talk and if you could find a common ground. so when you sit in the beach club, you hear people talking in languages you cannot understand or even recognize, and you hear people talking in english. you only get some snippets, one guy is always talking louder than the others, telling anecdotes about himself and making jokes. after a while I was really happy to be there alone, no need to talk about whatever, anecdotes or jokes, just say nothing and enjoy the perfect place. by the way, you are never really alone with a smartphone in your pocket.

that’s me in the lift and looking down on the city. perfect relaxation.

a breakfast view down on the beach club. it usually looks sad somehow, used, inactive and waiting for the night.

in between I had to check the perfect view on the city, if you look back from there, it looks really weird. you cannot see all the skyscrapers (they are constantly growing and multiplying) on kirchberg, you only see the tree silhouettes and the hotel foyer lights. once again a strange setting, just like a forest on a stage.

another view on the street nearby. it looks like you are in the woods but you are in the middle of the city. it is all there all the time.

still: we´ll open the studio in august again to work on ‘if and only if’, the show to open november 11 at SG1 in duisburg. you will also have the chance to access the reader via /CAMP (there won´t be catalogue but a reader helping you to get the concept of the exhibited works…). plus there are some further shows and festivals to be prepared. cross you fingers.

2019-07-25 dismissed project in the studio summer break | entry by sven
today is supposed to be the hottest day in germany (somewhere between 40 and 41 degrees C) and you cannot go out. there might be a long list what would be to do, actually its is a list of things not to do. as I am feeling to get lost within projects and personal issues I thought it would be time to finally dismiss a certain project.

around last autumn the idea of producing a podcast came up. I took it pretty far by developing a concept, topical hatricks for the episodes with certain guests and even a corporate design for the files to be put on the internet and its portals. I had some friends on board willing to talk about art and society, matthias danberg and tim heinzen confirmed to take their part in recorded conversation and contributed in developing ideas. I was not afraid of the technical production, I had a tascam field recorder on my list to record episodes wherever we wanted to. I have even contacted well-known blogger and podcaster vanessa giese (draussennurkaennchen.blogspot.com) to get into the issues of distribution and she kindly answered all of my questions an took my request really seriously.

after a long planning phase the hot idea got cold. would it really make sense to get into a new field which is even full of podcasters talking about whatever… plus, whenever I tried to listen to a podcast I considered it as pretty boring. did the world really need more recorded talk? my profunded view on things for the world to listen to and to feel enlightened? would I like to work on another piece of data to be pushed into the world to listened to one time, maybe even less? I like the idea of making a radio show, maybe joing a show for one time, or being guest in a podcast one time and that’s it.

instead I like to focus on music to be listened to again and again revealing a new layer every time. after considering options of new channel it is a real decision to not start a podcast. keeping the blog alive is work enough, and written – not spoken – words might me more precise to the core. (plus it is easy to consume or ignore and taking less space) it is good to know what not to do.

the ‘weisse nächte’ at raffelbergpark in mülheim have been over again. I have given up asking people to join me going there, if you go there alone you will meet fellow artists anyway, or you simply enjoy solitude and focus on the performances and plays. this years highlight has been dürrenmatt´s ‘der besuch der alten dame’. this play is still fresh as performed by a great ensemble of the theatre an der ruhr. however, dürrenmatt´s play explores capitalism as most powerful force in the universe. it teaches us a lot about ourselves (and) today. do I sound like your german teacher? maybe he was right…

by circumstance I had the chance to visit haus lange haus esters in krefeld among a group of students including a guided tour on the architecture and the on-going exhibition. above you see the model for andreas schmitten´s installation in front of the house of metal replicas of wind-destroyed garden furniture, a slide and a sun umbrella. I thought it would be lame at first glance but it became better the longer you stayed in between the thunderstorm aftermath. it delivered a feeling if post future and this is where we are.

playing av live with my project record of tides was pure fun. it has never been so easy to organize things and to play around with ideas and join festivals. this is the best way for me to work on music and present it live. the next show is coming up august 3 and I love to do an open air show after ten years again. as I am pretty fed up with the art scene recently I am happy to simply change the playground. and, yes, i´ll go back to the art scene. I cannot escape what I am, but I am more relaxed now. I have real real problems.

2019-06-13 tourists of the own history: echo and silence | entry by sven
I went back to zeeland for two weekends (michi even stayed the time between) to get away from the everyday stress and sorrow. spoilers first, it did not work for me the way it was meant to be, wherever you go, your problems and sorrow will follow and you cannot get rid of yourself. no worries, this is not going to be an endless lament again, I’ll close or pause the blog when things get worse…

going to the same place over and over again has tradition for us, it is a save time-off experience at the sea with seafood, beer and shopping next to a lot of time-wasting behaviour. this routine usually works and I am happy to discover new things at places I have been a thousand times before. zoutelande is changing and is becoming more touristic, more hotels and shopping options like it is trying to copy domburg. but this is just the consequence of profit developing, I found myself in too many visual echos. doing the same thing again and again is fun sometimes, it makes me feel secure, but doing it to often makes it feel hollow. additionally, I was not really aware to enjoy the new stuff, even if there was. the echo must turn to silence after a while.

zeeland is important to me, I even like to go here in winter, we always had a great time here. it is even the place where I have produced a lot for the ‘golden record’ video, a piece I am really proud or. above you see me looking up to the view point which appears a few times in the video as photographed (or recorded) over many years. on the view point we first see the replica, which later vanishes and is found in the woods near ooskapelle. it was strange, so many things around me had been used in an artistic or narrative context. I felt like visiting a set of a movie I have seen before. and it is strange, even the pictures I take mirror or echo pictures from before.

more visual echoes: in 2011 we found an old tree in the woods near ooskapelle and called it ‘tree of cognition’, which was just a fun name because there was no cognition at all, it has just sounded like a deep thought but is a flat joke. we have returned to the woods several times since but never managed to find the tree again (even if these woods are not pretty big). now, eight years later, we did and had to do the same posture again. so what is the cognition now? eight years pass by in a rush.

we have been to probably every village in zeeland but had to have a close look at the zeeuwse museum in middelburg. usually we would cut out stuff like these but it was a recommendation a truly impressive. we left scared by an egyptian child mummy, a great video called ‘fantasies on how to strike’ by lisette olsthoorn and selfies of myself in front of shell artworks creating visual echoes of the shell grotto in margate.

and more visual echo: whenever there is a webcam and wireless internet I like to take a special selfie, a screenshot of the webcam. this also goes back to an experience in luxembourg back in 2015 and found a new edition now near the zeeuwse riviera, actually the place to be when it comes to eating and drinking while looking at the sea.

check out the original webcam over here:
live.netcamviewer.nl/Zeeuwse-Riviera/719

also at middleburg: the vleeshal. another impressive exhibition space of actually just one room appealing half-gothic. however, kaspar müller fills it with a funny mixture of glass works and post internet appeal. I do not get the idea putting brackets around it but it fill the space with joy. I can say we spent more time here than many further visitors und the eyes of the friendly girls taking care of the space. we will return and have an eye on this venue.

vleeshal.nl/en

this is me in the attic of our tiny maisonette. it is amazing that such a tiny apartment still as corners that appear free. this is me thinking and waiting for leaving. we spend some time here watching ‘breaking bad’ for the third time. and drowsing, of course.

a final and classic shot on our last moment at the sea. it is beautiful and peaceful there, at the sea everything seems easy and problems disappear in the wind. even if it did not work for me the way it used to, there is nothing wrong with zeeland. it is perfect as it used to be and will make me return.

the haverkamp near my home in mülheim also is a relict of another time. i remember going here to see jamiri, the local but well-known comic artist, we even visited the restaurant and beergarden when jamiri left the haverkamp. it must have been a while, i went home from sport and was supposed to be picked up here. everything looks dreamy like always but is changing like everything.

a tram in gelsenkirchen with advertising for the upcoming szeniale. i am scheduled to do a av live set with record of tides and and i am looking forward to do so. cross your fingers, this might be great. all info over at the live section.

2019-05-03 filling space with grace within the layer cake | entry by sven
spring is usually the time with some days off and to make plans. also I have to come up with the layer cake metaphor again because this is what I feel like recently, a synchronic mixture of contradictive feelings, but I guess this is something that all adults have to deal with. next to all the sorrow and effort there must be space for something more, something inspiring and meaningful. being just a small (but reliable) cog in the machine (of work and life) it has become more and more difficult over the years to find the right thing with the right feeling, or let´s call it finding ‘grace in space’.

so here is some time off activity with lots of fun, disappointment and twist. as you see above I have assembled the guinnes world record 2019 attempt during the ‘thanks jimi festival’ making numerous guitarists play ‘hey joe’. we were actually far away from a new record and no-one could hear a single tone of the acoustic performers during the 15 minute band escorted version. however, there are worse ways to spend mayday. the festival and record attempt has a bigger tradition on poland (with up to 7000(?) guitarists participating, we counted about 60 players in front of the polish pub.

and here are some more pictures from the record attempt performance delivered by michaela best, facebook and instagram. I had to change the strings the night before and had to strike quite heavy, so my guitar got pretty much out of tune. however, no-one could hear it anyway. as you see, the thing looks good. also it was a great opportunity to rediscover jimi hendrix again. rock on.

true love in the galaxy at the ‘brodate’, as matthias would call it. after taking care of the image of being a proper artist with well chosen instagram feed and stories, he decided to let go and celebrate the good times to make your followers participate – or make them jealous. however, he is discovering a social media lifestyle I am in for years now! it is a classic set-up for us to surround us with burgers and beer to talk about us, the system, art and women – an endless story. as you can see, we had a lot of fun, as always.
classic bromance.

michi and me had some need for art so we went to krefeld to see the schütte pavilion and make a visit to the reopened haus lange and haus esters. spoilers first: one house was closed for installing the next show, one only had five sculptures on modern living, so we did not get in. the best thing was the pile of wooden shapes next to the entrance making us wonder if we were facing art or trash. (there is a new german saying questioning if something can be removed or discharged: ‘ist das kunst oder kann das weg?’) even if this might sound funny, we were actually wondering what it might be, even if we consider us as pretty open-minded, well educated and experienced. what does this say about art?

pretty disappointed we walked over to the schütte pavellion. the pavellion is a nice interim building, we expected some thomas schütte sculptures but only got some documentary videos on the silk based history of the city. the whole thing was supposed to cost 8 euros and appeared pretty lame and badly composed. you could say that you could have checked the website first but all krefeld museums have only one website which is horrible, it keeps you stupid but makes you aggressive. give it a try.

even if our visit was pretty disappointing, I have accidently discovered the ‘weich christian art shop’ which was supposed to close with the end of april. I checked the window and fell immediately in love with a wooden madonna and child sculpture which is something I was looking for. however, I had to return the next monday (one day before closing forever) and the two old friendly ladies helped me to make a great deal. I am totally happy with my new piece. I am a collector, but a hunter as well. for me collecting means hunting und working with a budget. I do not collect to generate to get rich by selling works again, I think it is even well collected if the value remains stable.

and here is another picture of me I cannot hold back. this is me having breakfast at tannenhäuschen, after attending the sauna park, the buffet and the bar and before attending the sauna park again. it is a perfect place to reset yourself to pre-set, to listen to unreleased record of tides tracks or spend the night with your love affair. we need to do it again, there is always need for heavy relaxation.

plus: I have a new shiftphone, finally.
let me see how it works, i´ll tell you later.

2019-04-19 on the wall: the art´s echoes of the last superstar | entry by sven
having some days off means to escape form the routines and issues, I was looking for a current show nearby to spend the day and offer some new paths to my thoughts. the bundeskunsthalle in bonn is recently displaying a show with artworks dealing with the impact of michael jackson. being not really a jacko fan, his impact on visual art, music and culture is undeniable. having a show on michael jackson on display is a political issue these days. a new documentary has brought up new accusations concerning child molestation and even abuse, so there is the need for many people to erase jackson’s work from the media as far as possible while his fans are still willing to follow their prophet everywhere. the new accusations have put a lot of pressure on the bundeskunsthalle questioning how to celebrate an artist who has probably abused kids.

the consequence is only fair: there is no excuse or relativisation for sexual abuse in any case, but (apart from what you and me might consider to have probably happened) there was not evidence on doing any of these things in the lawsuit against michael jackson trying to proof it. plus, there are no lawsuits against deceased people for a good reason, and even jackson cannot defend himself ten years after his death. there is a vapid aftertaste after all, even without any evidence, but trying to erase his work from history is probably the most naïve attempt to deal with it.

the bundeskunsthalle does not celebrate jackson as a person but as an icon and his echoes in visual art, without judging but also with some controversy delivered by the artworks shown. jackson remains a phenomenon, as media and fame become more flat, there won’t be superstars like him anymore. he might have been the first and also the last superstar of global relevance, undeniable and decoupled from your own preference. also he was not only a performer, his private and public image always merged, he probably could never tell himself, if he was private or performing. in the end america (and maybe the world) treated him the way they often treated big stars: pushing them up to the climax and then trying to destroy them, like a messiah who has disappointed his followers.

however you want to see it, jackson remains contradictive, inspiring and threatening, binging people together and dividing them, and it might be this contradiction that makes him the perfect motif for visual art. as he is still offing more questions than answers, we will remain a topic for the future and it can only be false to not discuss his phenomenon.

kehinde wiley shows jackson in the manner of european royal portraits, the way he usually works to create a certain tension of a black protagonist in a feudal setting. even if the painting is a remittance work requested by jackson himself (and finished after his death) I believe to see some innuendoes on questionable sexuality and drug abuse even in this work, using codes dutch masters would use as well. rembrandt might know exactly what is going on here.

I am sorry to have forgotten the artists name but the work is called ‘time can be a friend or an enemy’ creating a picture of (and in collaboration with) jacko showing him as older man. the guy in the picture reminds us of lando calrissian of star wars, well, time actually told another story. are you in the position you have anticipated for yourself ten years ago? and do you look as good as expected?

candice breitz shows many synchronized screens of german fans performing the whole ‘thriller’ album. it is funny at first place and then you realize yourself singing as well. the longer you watch you can see the worship. the prophet has left words and gestures, and they have to be reproduced and re-enacted, this is what keeps the cult alive. plus: the heritage has already become a part of the fans, they are performers as well, spreading the word.

the ‘jackson and bubbles’ sculpture, here as paul mccathy version. of course, it is making fun of jacko, mccarthy makes fun of everything, I guess. more interesting are the different layers and hands the motive has gone through. inspired by a newspaper picture jeff koons once created the famous kitsch sculpture, which was adapted by louise lawler, paul mccathy and even others. this is probably the iconic mirror of jackson in the art scene: iconic and hilarious at the same time.

paul pfeiffer presents ‘live evil’, footage of jackson dancing with the upper part of his body mirrored making him look even more like an alien performing some strange movements to achieve whatever. being a big pfeiffer fan, this is probably one of the weaker works, but is has to be in a show like this one.

pamela rosenkranz presents a screen with jackson looking at us. the work appears pretty realistic at first glance, but is has to be an animated photograph or something like that. nevertheless, it makes it´s point: while he had been watched all his life, jackson now stares back without any performance or words. I do not really get this piece but I was wondering what would I to say to him?

jordan wolfson I always getting my interest, still I cannot tell if I adore his work or if I consider it as crap, but I guess it is amazing to create something with this question in it while it is so massive and cannot be answered. in his video, he has isolated jackon´s eyes from a live interview he gave on his ranch. wolfson focuses on his eyes, because eyes don´t lie. this time the whole thing is a little too flat for me.

in all it´s contradiction and differing quality in shown pieces, this is a great show exploring michael jackson as a phenomenon of his time with a long echo. even without the music, there are different issues in his orbit concerning (black) identity, performance and media. still there is a big question of what he did do or did not do and the question if a bad guy could create great art and if this art can be percept isolated from the creator’s biography. (jackson is not the only protagonist for this unanswered question). when there is no evidence it turns out to be a question of believe. the best about the show is the lack of definite answers and your opportunity to decide yourself.

2019-04-16 lost in performance, happy end or progression? | entry by sven
the last weeks and months have been full of work and issues, I can say that I was drowning in work. it might be a phrase I use quite recently, this time it was definitely true. there was no space left fro music and art or simply enjoying things. things have just added up to a max, instead of reducing I decided to push it even more to get in position to get back some control again. a weird way to deal with stress and recourses, but I am not the one to back off when I know that I’m right. being gentle and collaborative, this does not happen too often. you feel like a running horse, you cannot stop, you try to find gratification in performance, what would be left of you when you´d stop? and will there be a happy end or is it only about going on? the solution bust be some kind of compromise or mash-up. something between light speed and supermassive fixation, a wide range of possibilities appears to be left anyway. however, now that I have climbed the highest mountain so far, I am sliding down from the grid, wondering when of if to come back. now it is time to put my very own thoughts in order and to talk about a nice job I was allowed to do.

I was asked to join a collaborative educational project of dutch and german students taking place at wunderland kalkar to work on new drafts for logos, flyers and social media clips. I was supposed to be the only one of the teachers being able to handle the audiovisual production, so the was a stronger need for me to be there. I was not really motivated to join because I was already full of work, even though I had to leave earlier. actually, the project was great and true fun, sometimes collaborating with teachers and working with students is so much fun that you wonder why they even pay for it. the wonderland kalkar is a strange place. originally drafted as a nuclear power station, the plutonium never arrived the building due change in politics and energy change (thank god). creative investors turned the areal into a fun fair park, restaurants, hotels, venues and bars. working, developing and having a good time seem to be hand in hand here.

as our students were supposed to shoot video material for their clips, some rides were exclusively opened for us to try. you can feel pretty important here. we made sure to shoot everything and to go directly to postproduction.

the big cooler is definitely the visual icon of the wunderland kalkar, is has a threatening ride inside which was luckily not running. as you stand inside the cooler, all sounds echo around like in an echo chamber. you can only imagine the ride filled with kids screaming while it is lifting up turning the cooler into epic torture for your ears. well, that´s not the joy I am looking for. what thrills me a lot more is the fact that everything in the park is for free. (of course, you have to pay the stay, actually I did not have to, because I was booked to join). so this is the test for your self control when the buffet, the rivella, the ice-cream machine, the cake, the chocolate and the beer is free and constantly available. staying on a monday night I was surprised to see the crowds coming, policemen, sodiers, stag night boys, dutch groups and seniors were doing party like it´s 1999. the teachers as well. me in between. well, sometimes even work is great.

2019-03-30 proud guest of ‘theQ::’ by proust, curated by massard | entry by sven
I am deeply honoured being asked to contribute a small interview to the 'theQ::', based upon the original questionnaire by marcel proust. the project is maintained by french musician and author thierry massard who turned out to be a true fan of my music, especially of the record of tides albums ‘solna’ and ‘endurance’. this project is a second version of a series of questionnaires originally done between 2006 and 2011, featuring fantastic artists and musicians like mira calix, ulrich schnauss and sorin paun aka randomform.

you can read my clever answers over at
the-q2.blogspot.com/2019/03/sven-piayda.html
the-q2.blogspot.com

a screenshot from the 'tagesschau' on march 23, germany´s most serious news program on television on the issue of (probably) upcoming upload filters and triggered demonstrations. philip j. fry is not sure if the new law is supposed to be okay or hoax. I had to take the screenshot to share it with the nerds on the facebook futurama fan group. thank god, the upload filters were not working yet, I would have probably not be able to share this tv event with them… however, the picture gained fifty likes and a few comments on ‘german angst’, ‘germans will be germans’ and ‘the nazis have taken over’ (among more funny comments and reposts of own experience concerning copyright violation and banning from social media.)
however, the article 13 (which is now article 17) is an european issue, not a german one. plus: it is discussed completely false by using terms like protection, payment and censorship instead of licensing and creativity. however, everyone believes that only machines can take care of the copyrights, as the reference data is too big to be handled. anyway, it is too big to be handled for a machine, which cannot even understand the context of the content it is supposed to filter it out. we´ll see…

and this is the original scene (delivered by morbotron.com) from the classic futurama episode ‘the lesser of two evils’ from which the last frame has become the most common background for memes on being not sure or wondering if it is the one or the other. in the classic episode, fry is not sure if he facing bender or his evil almost lookalike flexo. well, in the end it appears not this simple and you are surprised who is the evil one – well, maybe it is not surprising at all.

record of tides is supposed to perform at szeniale festival in gelsenkirchen on july 13. fashion designer katerina amprazi will do a fashion show at the same venue (which is still supposed to be announced) to open the night. I was happy to read about our collaboration in the april issue of isso magazine, actually we did it talk about possibilities weeks ago but did not fix anything yet. even if her announcement sounds like a masterplan, we do not have much recently. anyway, I am delighted to support her show with my sound before turning to my av live set. I hope we can find a collaboration that we both are happy with, cross your fingers… I do not know what you are doing on july 13, but you will definitely have a good time joining us. for the meantime, find out about her work over at katerinaamprazi.de and isso magazine pril 2019 issue.

as I am very busy at the moment (call it lightening up a candle on both sides) I will probably not join the art cologne this year. I haven´t asked for press accreditation yet, there won´t be time this year and probably no space in my head for it. well, you never know, the big fair has also something relaxing for me, even if this might sound strange. I´ll post a picture if I’ll be there anyway, but it is not on the schedule – no accreditation, no report. let´s see what happens, cross your fingers!

2019-03-06 faecal issues in a tenth doghouse anniversary | entry by sven
I am not blogging too much these days, it is full of issues, plans and problems. a lot of people want to spend time with me or claim my correspondence for different reasons, i prefer to step back a little. a lot of things are in interim status recently and I feel exhausted and nervous at the same time. there is much coming up anyway, I like to withdraw form everything that I am able to withdraw from like the art scene for example. I was offered to join the group starting a new kunstverein and other clubs of artists and curators but I feel that a lot of it comes too late for me. simply too late to believe in something bigger while having experienced the impossibility of great leaps. it is recently about simply going on and show good performance.

while having some single days off we retuned to biggekerke, a small town in zeeland we first visited in 2009. so this is a true anniversary. going to the same place over and over again does not mean to be open for discoveries but simply to stay away from all the everyday stuff. we got a doghouse again, well, small, cozy, perfect and with an architectural running gag for us.

the shower and toilet are in a different room of course, but that does not mean that a wall separates the two areas consequently. well, the upper part of the wall is missing giving an idea of an open cloak room. we are experienced with strange combinations from a trip to belgium in 2015 and I had to think of my own words: the only thing helping you here is being disciplined and to handle it like a grown-up. more or less, of course. (2015-07-20 belgian hotel hopping and room phenomena | entry by sven)

another great thing is hanging around in you room: watching spongebob in dutch or south park in english is perfectly relaxing.

fried seafood in domburg is a must have, well here it is.

I was fascinated about the mussels I had last autumn, it was great to try it again at de piraat, one of the classic beach restaurants in oostkapelle. as I did miss to take a picture of my first try, well here is a pic of my second.

here is another funny story at de piraat. next to a mother escorted by her son a their little dog stopped to tighten laces or something. during, the dog sat down to pee, only realized by little her son but feeling unable to says something when his mother said: “okay, we´re leaving!” the puddle of pee remained without anyone except us witnessing the situation. I was fascinated with the situation, three individuals, acting but not interacting and a result that no-one saw coming. it is just a puddle of dog pee, definitely no piece of art, but perfect metaphor for how things just happen.

and another doghouse: we must have stayed here in 2010 I guess an return to it every time we are around. as you can see, it is pretty much demounted inside, maybe reduced to a building shed recently, probably erased afterwards. we´ll see and probably check it.

and finally another beautiful picture of the sea. once again, you cannot capture it, truth found long before, anyway, here is one of many snapshots. enjoy!

two weeks ago I joined the opening of ‘ye olde food’ by ed atkins at k21 with matthias danberg. we both had never been to an opening at the k21 before and expected something big. as you can see, it was quite small but with all the important gallerists and caterers around (all ignoring us). atkins did nothing wrong, but the audience remained distant and passive even after sneaking through the exhibition. the show did not focus on digital production nor on the narrative strategies, so what was it all about? the museum is not interested in answering these questions but was happy to present a name that is already familiar in düsseldorf because of julia stoschek and her collection. there is a hollow aftertaste and the need to recap what I am looking for anyway and to accept where not to find it.

2019-02-04 turning down options because every way is wrong | entry by sven
living and going forward is about making decisions and also others to make the consequence happen. all the time, while you can only go wrong. the new year delivered some new ideas, I am not into new year´s resolutions, but it plopped up in my head when the month counter switched to one again. whenever you make a decision you will find yourself in the future looking back wondering if you should have taken the other road. everyone always feels to have made wrong decisions. well, honestly, the concept of right or wrong gests more and more soft the longer you deal with it: every decision is only right in at certain time for a certain aspect. things change all the time. the illusion to anticipate the ultimate benefit for you in the coming 50 years is an illusion. and it looks more hilarious if you´ll say it this way. to nail it: just do it…

making a decision appears always tricky but at least the choice is yours. the other scenario driving me nuts is the world of options: a network of people planning and pretending, all kinds of people all around, bookers, curators, gallerists, colleagues, friends and girls. you find yourself a zero gravity scenario: you are waiting for (sometimes even working on) things to happen. you know the chance for success or taken up is microscopically small (almost zero) which keeps you going, keeps you waiting and makes you passive and submissive. sometimes it is even worese: people confirm something but do not act anyway. talk is cheap and it has never been cheaper than today.
when you are older there are two phenomena showing up: all your patience and goodwill are not taken up, you cannot trigger interest. sencondly, getting older means being more patient, but you realize that there is no time left, in the future you will even be more dull for all of these people you are waiting for. it is a simple paradox.

the only answer can be found by lateral thinking: you turn down the options yourself. dismiss something you were never offered anyway. escape from control based upon the illusion of an option. I do not know if people get aware of the things they have lost when I turn down my interest (I just image their surprise) but I feel better knowing that I don’t have to wait for something that will never happen. these ideas sound so simple, but it is a long way to put them into words and even more to use them as principles in your life.

michaela was part of the wohngemeinschaft staff for over half a year, now the shop delivering cool people with cool stuff has closed because of the need to focus on another store project in ibbenbühren. michaela worked there but must have spend half of her salary on products from there, so did I, also judith (the shop head) had many presents and goodies for us, we even grabbed some furniture after closing for symbolic prices. as a farewell gift michaela did a funny simpsons adaptation, a (probably) unfinished embroidery of the words ‘quit while you´re ahead’. the advice fits perfect into this post, get off the ship before it sinks and leave before someone askes you to go. it is all a question of timing, because everything has its time.

instafame: my former student and buddy dean blues has posted this picture of himself on instagram trying to copy parts of my style. I hope he has already gains some more likes. however, that was funny. it is even less funny that we have planned to record some music together back in 2017 and we did not manage to do it. actually it was my fault because of being trapped in professional and personal issues, the whole thing came to nothing. so when this post is about complaining about the pretended will to make something happening I am one of these blatherskites as well. the world is more complex than we want it. nevertheless, we are still planning something, without date or pressure, but it is supposed to happen one day…

2019-01-08 …only art will save us: the groninger museum | entry by sven
as I have reported in the last post about the disappointing visit of leeuwarden, we were okay with leaving it again and visited the groninger museum on our way home. I was the only one of our tiny group who has not been here before, nevertheless we were curious about the studio glass art of dale chihuly and if it might work as contemporary art show. to put the the spoilers first: yes, it does.

chihuly´s art is combining craftwork with some connectional approaches and surprised with outstanding quality and quantity. as the entry of 20 euro for an adult is close to the limit of acceptable pricing, the show made you forget about money quickly.

chihuly´s work gets you straight away. it is perfectly crafted, strong and fragile, poetic and connectional, and only made of glass. the show seems like a collection of beautiful surrealistic landscapes and specimen reminding a little of kelbassas panoptikum´s work. plus: every visitor get a guided tour device delivering music for each room. it appeared strange to listen to nineties’ grunge making want to dance in front of glass sculptures, the american symphonic pieces appeared a lot more suitable. sound is a great additional channel to an art show but it also leads your attention away from the impressive pieces.

the only contemporary piece of the collection on display was jake and dinos chapman´s ‘unholy trinity’, leading me into a strange déjà vu. when I visited the kunstmuseum bochum last week for ‘bild macht religion’ the crucifixion group was also part of the show. their mash-up of christian imagery and mcdonalds franchise figures may be see as pure pubertal provocation (which it is) but is actually more than just beating up favourite enemies. the chapmans presented the crucifixion also among sculpture mixing up pseudo-african (religious) art with mcdonalds figures questioning the impact of commercial issues on culture. so if you spend enough money and effort on placing content or products in peoples lives, they will probably absorb it and add it to their culture, even mixing it with religious feelings. think about the hype on apple products and their prophetic leadership and obeying consumers, like a church without transcendence. could you imaging to enter a catholic church and replace the crucifix with the apple logo? this idea might be close to the one of the chapman brothers.
and there is even more: obviously I have travelled 245 kilometres from the kunstmuseum bochum to the groniger museum to see another edition of the same work. isn´t this exactly what franchise is all about? also it feels like a negative jackpot, the chance to see the same work at the same time in different museums is quite low but it actually happens and proves a bad suspicion: the canon of work worth being displayed, collected and shown again is quite limited leading to a cultural world in which all museums show the same. I know, this is quite overdramatized, but I hope you´ll get the point. the ideas stringed to these double crucifixions are worth to be kept in mind, because they tell something about art and even more about the whole world you live in.

and this is us once again in the groninger museum in the collection. you can still see our disappointment on leeuwarden in our sad eyes, the groninger museum was worth it.

the collection and the outstanding architecture as well offered many placed to make funny mirror selfies, well, here they are. complex shows absorb the whole condition, so this is what it ends up with.

2019-01-04 hopeless boredom in the european capital of culture | entry by sven
the idea was hilariously simple: why not use the days off ‘between the years’ and spend the new year´s eve with friends in the european capital of culture to make sure there is good time before and after the party. well, we might have been naïve to believe there would be something special around these days but we would have been happy with something instead of absolutely nothing. all museums were closed on new year´s eve and day (even unusual for germany and luxembourg) and nothing was going on downtown. we were lucky to find a restaurant having open until 10pm but that’s it. no café, pub or club open, the dutch here celebrate nye at home (most of them do not even assemble on the street at night while other try to blow up the whole crossing…), parties start at 1am, but this is the time where you would normally end up the whole thing.

the days were coined by a lack of options, nothing to do or to discover and officials like tourist info having no idea or serving wrong information. the whole city appeared boring and without any chance for discoveries. well, we ended up in cafés, restaurants and pubs – eating, drinking and discussing. we had a good time as group, no doubt, but this place as not necessary at all. even here silver linings are showing up giving a perfect truth: only art can save us.

the fries museum was open on only one day of our stay, so we visited it straight way. the dutch know how to curate museums, next to a big classic collection they served a rembrandt show next to contemporary positions on escher´s twisted realities. let´s have a look at the shows at fries before coming back to illustrate the disappointment of leeuwarden.

a loud and perfectly overwhelming start into the house, these weird video sculptures pumping techno sound while moving and making it impossible to get the whole thing. a visit to the fun fair, too much to remember…

the ‘phantom limb’ group show was perfectly curated, skipping big names for outstanding positions of each discipline. this is what a show should look like: discoveries and newfound questions everywhere. above you see me and us in and at a colour room helping you to loose orientation wile fiving into the colour.

the rembrandt show is also great but limited. it features a few works but is mainly filled with rembrandt´s students and coevals. is way to place light and giving plasticity to jewellery is awesome and his work is worth to be seen on the wall.

the works of his time were filled with details serving as symbols for mostly sexual innuendos. however, my favourite picture was the one of a young woman receiving a letter from her lover with a brooch as gift. when I looked at it the frame on the table appears like a laptop and the brooch as smartphone. I imagined her saying: ‘I have finally managed to install facebook on my laptop as well as on my phone!’ we had a laugh at the museum and I guess many of the works are working as comedies made to trigger people laughing or being impressed. in our age, visitors sometimes pretend being impressed without any joy, like you would imagine them in a church. humour is no innovation of the present, I´m sure that rembrandt and his mates would agree…

a street in leeuwarden that became a daily ritual: going downtown and back, again and again. not ugly, just boring.

jaume plensa´s beautiful work of a girl and a boy dreaming is brilliant and hopelessly lonely placed next to the main station.

new year´s eve at midnight. the have been rockets and firecrackers all day, at night there have been spots where all the stuff got blown up. it actually felt like civil war with only a few people on the streets and extremely loud firecrackers. it was mental. but no mood anyway…

we read about the new year´s day swimming. even more funny, with us searching for it with no one on a café knowing about working only 800 m away. however, the brave ones jumped into the water and making the whole event end after twenty minutes. nothing is celebrated, no need to stay, where do all these people go?

the oldehove tower made a big impression on me. unfortunately it was closed and not open for visitors. as you see on the picture (there is no photoshop editing) the big tower is formed like a banana. it is a unfinished piece and was supposed to be three times as high as it is. when it started tilting during the beginning of construction in the 16th century they tried to compensate the tilt giving it this strange shape. when you walk around it, you might get the impression that it is moving and about to fall down on you. however, this tower appears as perfect symbol to our trip to leeuwarden: no was to get in, a bad idea from the start and the helpless attempt to turn it into something stable. we love the netherlands, zeeland and walcheren, we are usually fascinated by every place we go and every museum we enter, but leeuwarden will stay without recommendation – and without return.
