Schon etwas länger unterwegs ist Sven Piayda mit seinem Projekt Record of Tides, das mit vertrakten Electro-Instrumentals versucht, alte Hörgewohnheiten aufzubrechen und die Lust auf neue klangliche Wege zu entfachen. Sein letztes Werk "Purchases" hat bereits im Sommer vergangenen Jahres das Licht der Welt erblickt - und ist erfahrungsgemäß unter dem Radar von UNTER.TON geflogen. Piayda selbst wurde bei uns vorstellig, um sein Projekt zu präsentieren. Dafür kann man ihm nicht genug danken. Denn er hat aufmerksam unser Magazin verfolgt und weiß: wir wollen überraschen und überrascht werden. Das schafft Piayda - und so spielend einfach obendrein. Es benötigt lediglich die Chuzpe, sich vom Song als grundlegende Struktur zu verabschieden. Das hat zwar zur Folge, dass Chaos zum Stilprinzip erhoben wird, doch der Mann weiß ziemlich genau, wie damit umzugehen ist. In seinen Stücken herrscht geregelte Unordnung: Innerhalb der Songs wechseln die Stimmungen, werden Breaks eingebaut und Samples als eigenes Instrument begriffen, das eine ganze Komposition tragen kann. Alles wirkt wie in schnellen Schnitten zusammengefügt, und doch wäre die Gesamtatmosphäre der insgesamt 16 Songs mit "chillig" sehr treffend umschrieben. Record Of Tides besitzt einen sophistischeren Ansatz für die elektronische Musik. "Purchases" könnte durchaus auch als klangliche Untermalung diverser Kunstinstallationen oder Vernissagen aktueller Maler oder Bildhauer herhalten. Schließlich ist der Anspruch bei Record Of Tides hoch. Es benötigt daher vielleicht die eine oder andere weitere Runde, um diesem Album gedanklich habhaft zu werden. Wenn man es dann aber geschafft hat, stellt sich größtmöglicher Hörgenuss ein.

Sven Piayda has been on the road for a while now with his Record of Tides project, which tries to break old listening habits with familiar electro-instrumentals and ignite the desire for new sonic paths. His last work "Purchases" already saw the light of day in the summer of last year - and from experience flew under the radar of UNTER.TON. Piyada himself came to us to present his project. We can't thank him enough for that. Because he has followed our magazine closely and knows: we want to surprise and be surprised. Piayda achieves this - and so easily to boot. All it needs is the chutzpah to say goodbye to the song as a basic structure. The result is that chaos is elevated to a stylistic principle, but the man knows quite well how to deal with it. In his pieces, orderly disorder reigns: within the songs, the moods change, breaks are built in and samples are understood as an instrument in their own right that can carry an entire composition. Everything seems to be put together in quick cuts, and yet the overall atmosphere of the 16 songs would be very aptly described as "chilling". Record Of Tides has a more sophistical approach to electronic music. "Purchases" could also serve as a sound background for various art installations or vernissages of current painters or sculptors. After all, Record Of Tides has high standards. Therefore, it may take one or two more rounds to become mentally aware of this album. But once you have done so, you will enjoy listening to it as much as possible.

Réjouissance pour certains, hurlements pour les autres, voici donc que ROT se décide à franchir le pas. La rupture historique / Un gap générationnel qui laissera certains d'entre-nous parcourir, désormais, leur présent avec ce regard nostalgique, oublieux de tout, ce même regard, qui, demain, fera les beaux jours des industriels de l'opportuniste entertainment de masse - Un round d'avance pour Sven Piayda - À l'heure où les tenanciers de l'écoute des tendances, font encore le pari d'une énième réécriture d'un passé sans plus d'intérêt qu'il n'ait jamais eu, voici que se matérialise enfin l'espérance d'un possible après. Construit, par un regard avisé sur la vaporeuse vague, seule nouveauté récente, digne d'intérêt, Purchases en soustrait, à son profit, une ligne de partage historique, et annonce une aube radieuse débarrassée des affres de l'influence endémique, conservant, toutefois, par politesse, un courtois voisinage avec le tant regretté abstract hip hop. Le présent est ailleurs. Les musicologues moins "avisés", et producteurs de sons à la mémoire vacillante, nourris du butin de leurs ainés, doivent désormais s'inquiéter de leur pérennité - Lignes mélodiques appuyées ou habilement concassées, rythmiques en équilibre précaire, Purchases a l'avantageuse intelligence de ne pas immédiatement révéler toute sa luxuriante richesse. Nous savons toutes et tous, qu'il en est souvent ainsi, s'agissant du meilleur de nos banques de données sonores.

Parvenu à ce stade, le suspence devrait logiquement être à son comble, lecteur assidu, attendant, qu'enfin soit révélé à vos sens en alerte, des indices de compréhension de l'ensemble - il n'en sera rien - pas un traitre mot, motus. Les 16 perles rares de Purchases n'en ont assurément pas besoin, se satisfaisant avec délectation, du bonheur, d'une histoire à nouveau en marche - Une pièce maîtresse !

Rejoicing for some, screaming for others, RoT decides to take the plunge. The historical break / A generational gap that will let some of us go through our present with this nostalgic look (forgetting everything) that, tomorrow, will make the good days of the industrialists of the opportunistic mass entertainment - A round of advance for Sven Piayda - At the time when the holders of the listening of tendencies, still make the bet of an umpteenth rewriting of a past without more interest than it ever had, here is that the hope of a possible after is finally materialized. Constructed, by an informed look at the vaporous wave, the only recent novelty worthy of interest, Purchases subtracts, for its own benefit, a historical dividing line, and announces a radiant dawn free of the afflictions of endemic influence, but preserving by courtesy, a courteous neighbourhood with the so much regretted abstract hip hop. The less "wise" musicologists, and producers of sounds with a wavering memory, nourished by the spoils of their elders, must now worry about their durability - Melodic lines supported or skilfully crushed, rhythmics in precarious balance, Purchases has the advantage of not immediately revealing all its luxuriant richness. We all know that this is often the case when it comes from the best of our sound data banks.

At this step, the suspense should logically be at its height, assiduous readers, waiting for the clues to the understanding of the whole to be revealed to your alert senses - it won't be - not a word, motus. The 16 rare pearls of Purchases certainly don't need it, satisfying themselves with delight, with the happiness of a story once again in progress - Masterpiece!

i listened [...] – sounds great. my favourite is the 'purchases' album, a bit of boards of canada vibes in there. the eps explore different styles and moods but not too far from 'purchases'. by the covers (you can tell) this is a series, since the artworks are variations of the same design. cool stuff.
