please,
can you tell me something about the bowie art print contest? sure,
i can, yeah i will...wait, someone must have been googling my name finding
irritating facts about me, piayda has been shocking the inetnational art
scene in 2000? with david bowie? what?
ok, slow down, first of all, i do not like to show up with yesterday´s
success like a monstrance, it was good, it was great, but it is over so
i prefer to move on to the next strike. anyway, december in 2000 is a
month which i will probably never forget.
i´m a big bowie fan, no doubt about that, if you have listened to
"wild is the wind" or "joining you" my sixties overdriving,
breaking, tweaky voice proves my followship to this great artitst, who
has definded about five decades... (what do you think the MGMT sound comes
from...?) i was fascinated by bowie when i discovered him quite lately
with "earthling" (please remember, i´m quite young...)
i thought: "wow, he is that old, but he is adding techno and drum´n`base
to his rock style, he is still searching and adapting!", which is
something i was and still am about to do. he came up with innovative music,
an innovatve website concept and he even appeard as a serious visual artist.
bowieart.com featured his artwork, even a free david bowie print. i recieved
it, printed and hanged it - perfect.
at that time i was still painting. i had this (what i´ve called)
basquiatesque style, i tried to turn basquiat´s roughness into something
more poetic by adding skechesque drafts. i really liked my style, it was
even higly appreciated by others but around that time i was looking for
other ways of visual expression by working more conceptual. so i was more
interested in technological production like photography, digital processing
and printmaking.
suddenly, bowieart came up with the bowiert print competition. i thoght
it was a good way to participate, even to interact with my idol, allthough
i was abandoning my painting style i thought i should use it for the last
time pleasing bowie, who had portrait andy warhol in julian schnabel´s
movie "basquiat" and would probably appreciate my style...
...i was right. allthough the other two judges (shez 360 and famous young
brithish artist garvin turk) preferred other entries, bowie decided the
struggle and managed to set my entry as the "best" recreation
of his print.
once again, this is what david bowie wrote:
A major difficulty with this one is that the three of us (the three
judges, David Bowie, Gavin Turk and Shez 360) have very different needs
when it comes to looking at stuff. For my own part I'm sometimes looking
for a sense of disorientation attractively presented. Much like my needs
in life, actually. In which case, for me (and I'm not alone here thank
goodness), Sven wins hands down. It panders ever so slightly to infancy,
leans lightly on lampoon and it's a great re-representation...and in jolly
nice bright colours too. Have a cigar Sven.
i won and was extremely euphoric. fame? big money? studying in oxford?
meeting david for signing? no, nothing at all. i scanned my work, it was
printed in england, david signed them and then tey was sent to me. an
edition of three, i signed them, i kept one for myself and sent the to
others back, one for david, one for bowieart. and that´s the story.
a lot of other interesting things happened after this in my life, please
ask for that!!!
at that time i was one of the most productive and pushing artists of phoenixarts.
pav2 (as we called it later) had a site documenting the print competition
and had shown sreenshots of davidbowie.com and bowieart.com. unfortunately
the gallery and the site broke down, only fragments are still on.
fortunately and actually we saved and adapted the site for svennet, and
after five years it is on again.
