2024-10-11 new record of tides album ‘love mural’ out now

it is our massive pleasure to announce the release of record of tides´ long-awaited ‘love mural’ album via zany music on october 11, 2024. the album was produced in spring and summer in 2024 and mainly inspired by street art in ehrenfeld (cologne) and frohnhausen (essen). back in spring piayda already announced to be working on a new record of tides album reporting two tracks being produced on the island of texel. ‘love mural’ is the seventh album of the ‘purchases’ series, the album is supposed to be the legit follow-up to 'common findings’ (2024) while using sample-based post-hiphop and idm production. the album also contains the track ‘snow white’ featuring o.s.cillator. the video for the track was directed by sven piayda while the album artwork is (co-)created by long-term collaborator chris huff merging different image sources among collage, photography and a.i.-generated imagery mirroring the audio production process.

the album was once again beautifully mastered by michael schreiber who also brought in the idea for using a.i.-generated voices.

zany music and record of tides announced collaborators for future productions from different backgrounds: electronic producer HYRN is well known from electric café ruhr performances and will add their unique sound to the ‘purchases’ universe. blues harpist martin slemeyer and sven piayda have shared the stage together for numerous live performances at jams and have been in touch for common projects for years now. slemeyer will proof that the harp also belongs to post hip-hop. both artists are not featured on ‘love mural’ but will be on the follow-up release which is still in production.

primals scapes and architects of utter destruction drummer jan van aachen will also be contributing drums. primal scapes mastermind, architects of utter destruction co-producer and long-term friend michael schreiber has once again announced to work on the final mastering of the upcoming productions.

birte-marie loehr & jan kromarek aka RECONQ have once again assembled works of mülheim based artists for the 2025 calendar of ‘mülheimer künstler für kinder’. this year sven piayda´s ‘on’ (2024) is featured among numerous remarkable works. sven piayda has contributed work for the calendar for the forth time. the ring binder is available from the museum shop of kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr at a price of 10 euro. the profits will be donated for children in need. unfortunately we do not have another copy for you as giveaway, please purchase your copy from the museum shop of kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr.

in 2024 we look back on 25 years of 'portrait' and zany music, the label exploring musical styles expanding from idm to rock, from post hip-hop to pop metal. releasing on compact disc in the first decade, zany music changed to digital releases (mp3 and wav) and has put out even some additional vinyl in the last five years. before 1999 piayda did song demos and ambient compositions on tape even featuring the zany music labelling but without having it available to the public.

after producing two shaved space monkey albums based upon samples chopped from symphonic recordings and italo pop, ‘timber’ appeared to be the first serous attempt to create electronic music based on self-made samples avoiding guitars or rock drums. the style could be labelled as post electronica. This album is the basement for the 2024 avant-garde electronica/post hip-hop masterpiece ‘common findings’. the album is available as kreislauf.organsation/zany music 2014 digital re-release featuring two bonus tracks.

the flamma piayda complex ‘the evidence’
after having quit the solo album series as sven, piayda teamed up with former student and destination: nowhere singer sebastian flamma to mash-up song ideas from their former projects with new riffs and lyrics. the result was a well-appreciated and successful pop metal album. still being friends, flamma and piayda never managed to record a follow-up album. the album is available as 2021 digital re-release.

after a very long waiting period, we are extremely pleased to announce the release of ‘unrest’, the second album of architects of utter destruction. zany music already put out the single ‘no-one listens’ on february 2nd while releasing the promotional video to the song today via youtube. the album features eight songs among an album version of ‘no-one listens’ and was recorded in spring 2023.
the new songs feature architects of utter destruction formed with chris huff (AESTATE, penrose delta, primal scapes) on bass and jan van aachen (primal scapes) on drums. the band´s sound might be a little more transparent and synth driven compared to previous recordings. the band is also working on material for a third album, programming has been done, lyrics will have to be completed. the next album is supposed to feature more contributions by guest musicians. however, piayda announced to have some songs which might appear on a future album.

as we are celebrating the 25th (!) anniversary of the release of 'portrait' on september 25, we have decided to offer 'the singles' and 'b-Sides' for name-your-price-download on this specific date. the next electric café ruhr will come up on sunday (!), september 22 at 4 pm at makroscpe in mülheim an der ruhr. this is a remarkable date as it is the first time the festival will take place on a sunday afternoon and recent record of tides production collaborators are scheduled to perform. as announced recently o.s.cillator and HYRN will perform sets at this event. piayda is recently finishing productions and will hopefully return live (or with a hdj set). record of tides live dates are not scheduled recently. however, this date is recommended, you are welcome to join and may meet your favourite electronic performers.
(in advance of the ECR festival, we would recommend you to check out the upcoming events in frohnhausen: september 20 will be parking day at hummelbude, septeber 21 will deliver ‘fun in frohnhausen’ on the iconic market place.)

this year´s poma exhibition ‘fragments of interests’ started displaying video art at mestský park košice on may 16, 2024 in košice, slovakia. curated by beáta kolbašovská and jakub pišek, 17 artists from all over the world who have different backgrounds deal with different topics and techniques within media art.

this time sven piayda´s 'the impossibility to take pictures of the present' (which has been shown at forum kunst und architektur last year) was part of the show as special upright and speed-up four minute edit. even if announced differently before the works ends september 1, 2024. sven piayda and the studio would like to thank beáta kolbašovská and jakub pišek for making this wonderful project happen and keeping it well documented.

zany music has already released the record of tides albums ‘playground magrathea’ and ‘common findings’ in 2024 but sven piayda is still busy in producing additions to the ’purchases’ series. back in winter 2020/21 piayda started to focus on mainly sample-based productions exploring post hip-hop, downbeat, idm and experimental tracks. the series already counts six albums (next to further record of tides albums), before announcing further releases, zany music and record of tides announce collaborators for future productions from different backgrounds:

on august 24, 2024 the szeniale festival took place for the third time in gelsenkirchen in the ückendorf district. record of tides has performed two great audio visual live sets at szeniale in 2019 and 2022, in 2024 piayda has announced to look forward to join the festival among the audience. therefore record of tides released the live bootegs from 2019 and 2022 via archive.org supporting the 2024 szeniale festival. the recordings feature a mixed sound of line out and live footage recording as it is supposed to capture the atmosphere.

after a very long waiting period, we are extremely pleased to announce the release of ‘unrest’, the second album of architects of utter destruction. zany music already put out the single ‘no-one listens’ on february 2nd while releasing the promotional video to the song today via youtube. the album features eight songs among an album version of ‘no-one listens’ and was recorded in spring 2023.
the new songs feature architects of utter destruction formed with chris huff (AESTATE, penrose delta, primal scapes) on bass and jan van aachen (primal scapes) on drums. the band´s sound might be a little more transparent and synth driven compared to previous recordings. the band is also working on material for a third album, programming has been done, lyrics will have to be completed. the next album is supposed to feature more contributions by guest musicians. however, piayda announced to have some songs which might appear on a future album.

2024-08-23 record of tides´ 2022 & 2019 szeniale live bootlegs out now
on august 24, 2024 the szeniale festival will take place for the third time in gelsenkirchen in the ückendorf district. record of tides has performed two great audio visual live sets at szeniale in 2019 and 2022, in 2024 piayda has announced to look forward to join the festival among the audience. therefore record of tides releases the live bootegs from 2019 and 2022 via archive.org supporting the 2024 szeniale festival. the recordings feature a mixed sound of line out and live footage recording as it is supposed to capture the atmosphere. while record of tides is recently working with producer michael schreiber on a new av show, you can rediscover the very differing live sets as performed at szeniale festival of the past years. we hope to see you there!?

in september 1999 zany music released sven´s debut album ‘portrait’. this first album on compact disc appeared to be the pivotal milestone for of sven piayda´s (song) writing, performing, producing and releasing in decades to come. even recent productions by record of tides or architects of utter destruction are based upon this first album.

in 2024 we look back on 25 years of 'portrait' and zany music, the label exploring musical styles expanding from idm to rock, from post hip-hop to pop metal. releasing on compact disc in the first decade, zany music changed to digital releases (mp3 and wav) and has put out even some additional vinyl in the last five years. before 1999 piayda did song demos and ambient compositions on tape even featuring the zany music labelling but without having it available to the public.

after producing two shaved space monkey albums based upon samples chopped from symphonic recordings and italo pop, ‘timber’ appeared to be the first serous attempt to create electronic music based on self-made samples avoiding guitars or rock drums. the style could be labelled as post electronica. This album is the basement for the 2024 avant-garde electronica/post hip-hop masterpiece ‘common findings’. the album is available as kreislauf.organsation/zany music 2014 digital re-release featuring two bonus tracks.

the flamma piayda complex ‘the evidence’
after having quit the solo album series as sven, piayda teamed up with former student and destination: nowhere singer sebastian flamma to mash-up song ideas from their former projects with new riffs and lyrics. the result was a well-appreciated and successful pop metal album. still being friends, flamma and piayda never managed to record a follow-up album. the album is available as 2021 digital re-release.

 as we are entering summer´s home stretch, we can tell that it seems that architects of utter destruction have finished the production of the third album. now sven piayda is working on the artwork and edits for the upcoming singles which may take some time. the group is also discussing an innovative album concept for the third long player – still it is undecided, if the new idea is a good one. as announced before, piayda is already writing new material for further productions.

‘common findings’ is the sixth album of the ‘purchases’ series, the album is supposed to be the legit follow-up to 'playground magrathea’ (2024) while using sample-based post-hiphop and idm production. it contains already known tracks like ‘refound’ and ‘in ages to come’ as performed live at makroscope mülheim for electric café ruhr on june 15, 2024. the album also contains the track ‘dream within a dream’ featuring andreas hilburg on melodeon (see journal or recordoftides.com). the video for the track ‘refound’ as well as the album artwork is (co-)created by long-term collaborator chris huff. the video for ‘the future is over’ is directed by long-term friend and collaborator grischo schluesi.
the album also features a bonus track called ‘bumble memory' and the recording of the full live set at makroscope as well.

the album was once again beautifully mastered by michael schreiber and will be available digitally only.

this year´s poma exhibition ‘fragments of interests’ started displaying video art at mestský park košice on may 16, 2024 in košice, slovakia. curated by beáta kolbašovská and jakub pišek, 17 artists from all over the world who have different backgrounds deal with different topics and techniques within media art.
above you can see some snapshots from the opening, you can have a look at more pictures over at the exhibitions section. some more pictures by martin varga have been added.

this time sven piayda´s 'the impossibility to take pictures of the present' (which has been shown at forum kunst und architektur last year) is part of the show as special upright and speed-up four minute edit. even if annopunced differently before the works will be on display until september 1, 2024, so the works will be on display all summer after sunset.

record of tides´ recorded live set will be released as 'live at makroscope for electric café ruhr 2024-06-15' on july 28, 2024. the set was kindly recorded by thomas hoeveler (who also performed as tangerine tom that night) and mastered by michael schreiber. the cover features artwork by sven piayda to make shure that it fits into the 'live bootleg' series as well as into the 'purchases' series and is based upon photographs taken by michael schreiber and sven piayda. promoting this live release (there is no zany music catalogue number) a live video filmed by thomas hoeveler of the previously unreleased track 'in ages to come' will be available via youtube on the date of release as well.

sven piayda´s rock band project architects of utter destruction has teamed up with michael schreiber a.k.a. primal scapes for a cover version of ‘always’ by erasure. schreiber had been on the list to join the project for a long time now, in april the group finally came together for a recording session in schreiber´s studio. piayda had been working on the arrangement for months while the idea to do a cover of this song has been tossed around for years now.
schreiber joins the band on synth, programming and production, he also re-arranged and produced the drum tracks with had originally been done by jan van aachen. the group is once again completed by chris huff on bass and synth programming.

‘always’ comes a s /CAMP exclusive song. as the song is a cover version it is not released by zany music and therefore not released via bandcamp. this song appears as a test to see what architects of destruction sound like with michael schreiber as producer. piayda has already announced to have written and programmed a third AOUD album, schreiber, van aachen, huff and further drummers are supposed to be involved, there is not time schedule yet.

this year´s poma exhibition ‘fragments of interests’ started displaying video art at mestský park košice on may 16, 2024 in košice, slovakia. curated by beáta kolbašovská and jakub pišek, 17 artists from all over the world who have different backgrounds deal with different topics and techniques within media art.

this time sven piayda´s 'the impossibility to take pictures of the present' (which has been shown at forum kunst und architektur last year) is part of the show as special upright and speed-up four minute edit. even if annopunced differently before the works will be on display until september 1, 2024, so the works will be on display all summer after sunset.

2024-06-04 robin moedder x record of tides live at electric café festival, june 15
we are delighted to finally announce record of tides to play live at electric café festival at makroscope on june 15, 2024. for this appearance video artist robin moedder will join piayda on stage to sync visuals to the new live set. moedder and piayda have been working on this collaboration for about two years, moedder already directed the video for ‘deep cruise’.

record of tides performed live for the last time at szeniale in gelsenkirchen in august 2022. all live appearances afterwards had been cancelled caused by different reasons. now piayda returns live to the electric café festival after playing his last show for the festival at ‘beats im bunker’ at medienbunker marxloh in duisburg in 2020. before, record of tides already appeared at electric café ruhr² open air in essen werden and debuted at electric café in eisenheim back in 2018.

moedder and piayda will play a short set of 30 minutes among further electronic artists. even if announced diffferently before, robin moedder x record of tides will not return in october for a larger show.

sven piayda´s rock band project architects of utter destruction has teamed up with michael schreiber a.k.a. primal scapes for a cover version of ‘always’ by erasure. schreiber had been on the list to join the project for a long time now, in april the group finally came together for a recording session in schreiber´s studio. piayda had been working on the arrangement for months while the idea to do a cover of this song has been tossed around for years now.
schreiber joins the band on synth, programming and production, he also re-arranged and produced the drum tracks with had originally been done by jan van aachen. the group is once again completed by chris huff on bass and synth programming.

‘always’ comes a s /CAMP exclusive song. as the song is a cover version it is not released by zany music and therefore not released via bandcamp. this song appears as a test to see what architects of destruction sound like with michael schreiber as producer. piayda has already announced to have written and programmed a third AOUD album, schreiber, van aachen, huff and further drummers are supposed to be involved, there is not time schedule yet.

on may 5 the galerie an der ruhr in mülheim an der ruhr opened the ‘begegnungen’ group show. on request of show curator klaus wiesel sven piayda shows different works assembled as ‘triangle readings’. piayda returned with works differing in size as well as in production years and methods.

‘triangle readings’ features video, photography and cgi, according to the title there is also be a reader ((click to open in new browser tab or right mouseclick and save as to download.) giving background information on the exhibited pieces. as piayda has announced to have no interest in doing a solo show recently, the show appears like a solo show within a group show. the show will be on display until may 26. more pictures in the exhibitions section.

the show was closed last weekend with a big charity auction. sven piayda and everyone at the studio is happy on the auction result, sales and echo. find out by reading sven´s own words in the journal.

2024-05-28 AOUD present new line-up and new exclusive cover song
sven piayda´s rock band project architects of utter destruction has teamed up with michael schreiber a.k.a. primal scapes for a cover version of ‘always’ by erasure. schreiber had been on the list to join the project for a long time now, in april the group finally came together for a recording session in schreiber´s studio. piayda had been working on the arrangement for months while the idea to do a cover of this song has been tossed around for years now.

as schreiber and piayda also recorded music for schreiber´s project primal scapes, the song ‘call of the sea’ has been released via youtube. according to schreiber there is no new scheduled album in the making, but there are songs and tracks which will be produced and recorded. via website he announces: sometimes it's like that, there are phases when you're needed and you're so busy that there's simply no time left for anything private. that's exactly the reason why nothing has happened here in the last few months, but it's about to change again. there will finally be some music again soon, you can look forward to a really nice track that i recorded together with record of tides aka sven piayda (you know). despite the big break and all the difficulties, sven and I are still a good team and work perfectly together.
additionally, there have been recordings for a new track of record of tides´ ’collected riffing works’ series.

it is our massive pleasure to announce the release of record of tides´ long-awaited ‘playground magrathea’ album via zany music on february 9, 2024. the album was already finished in 2023 and mainly inspired by the district of froho.
‘playground magrathea’ is the fifth album of the ‘purchases’ series, the album is supposed to be the legit follow-up to 'pieces upon pieces’ (2023) while using sample-based post-hiphop and idm production.
it contains already known tracks like ‘hyperbowl’ and ‘easy shredding through the days’. the videos for these tracks as well as the album artwork is (co-)created by long-term collaborator chris huff.
the album also features ‘free (alternaitve version)' feat. jan-dirk platek and was originally produced back in 2022 for their common ep 'boxes', here the track is finally presented in a record of tides album context as alternative, maybe even better version.

sven already wrote in his blog that he is working on a new album after the upcoming one: more or less accidently I started a new record of tides album and have already finished 12 tracks already. it just happens when I hang out with different laptops on the couch, layering samples to a weird post-whatever sound. it just happens.

2024-05-10 poma opens video art exhibition at mestský park košice on may 16
this year´s poma exhibition ‘fragments of interests’ will start displaying video art at mestský park košice on may 16, 2024 in košice, slovakia. curated by beáta kolbašovská and jakub pišek, 17 artists from all over the world who have different backgrounds and deal with different topics and techniques within media art. this time sven piayda´s 'the impossibility to take pictures of the present' (which has been shown at forum kunst und architektur last year) will be part of the show and will come up as special upright and speed-up four minute edit. the works will be on display until june 6, 2024.

on may 5 the galerie an der ruhr in mülheim an der ruhr opened the ‘begegnungen’ group show. on request of show curator klaus wiesel sven piayda shows different works assembled as ‘triangle readings’. having already shown ‘future perfect (lvb#10)’ back in 2020 in this room, piayda returns with works differing in size as well as in production years and methods.

‘triangle readings’ features video, photography and cgi, according to the title there will also be a reader (paper and online) giving background information on the exhibited pieces. as piayda has announced to have no interest in doing a solo show recently, the show appears like a solo show within a group show. the show will be on display until may 26. more pictures in the exhibitions section.

after a very long waiting period, we are extremely pleased to announce the release of ‘unrest’, the second album of architects of utter destruction. zany music already put out the single ‘no-one listens’ on february 2nd while releasing the promotional video to the song today via youtube. the album features eight songs among an album version of ‘no-one listens’ and was recorded in spring 2023.
the new songs feature architects of utter destruction formed with chris huff (AESTATE, penrose delta, primal scapes) on bass and jan van aachen (primal scapes) on drums. the band´s sound might be a little more transparent and synth driven compared to previous recordings. the band is also working on material for a third album, programming has been done, lyrics will have to be completed. the next album is supposed to feature more contributions by guest musicians. however, piayda announced to have some songs which might appear on a future album.

it is our massive pleasure to announce the release of record of tides´ long-awaited ‘playground magrathea’ album via zany music on february 9, 2024. the album was already finished in 2023 and mainly inspired by the district of froho.
‘playground magrathea’ is the fifth album of the ‘purchases’ series, the album is supposed to be the legit follow-up to 'pieces upon pieces’ (2023) while using sample-based post-hiphop and idm production.
it contains already known tracks like ‘hyperbowl’ and ‘easy shredding through the days’. the videos for these tracks as well as the album artwork is (co-)created by long-term collaborator chris huff.
the album also features ‘free (alternaitve version)' feat. jan-dirk platek and was originally produced back in 2022 for their common ep 'boxes', here the track is finally presented in a record of tides album context as alternative, maybe even better version.

update 2024-04-30: here are some first impression of the show during installation monday. the show features older and brand new works, especially the pieces featuring donatello’s ‘david’ apper confusing and immersive.
studio head chris huff states: when approaching the works shown, one must be aware of their ambiguity as they make their statement less in the presentation of the motif than in the doubling of their meaning through the chosen production method.
a big thank you to michaela best for finalizing the reader, curator klaus wiesel for his big support while drafting and installing the show and a big thank you to artist heidi becker for technical support.

christopher terhart´s movie debut titled ‘kaivalya’, an experimental documentary about solitude, premierd on april 18 at südbahnhof krefeld, germany. terhart hosted the night and answered questions on the movie afterwards to a very open-minded and interested audience. piayda´s soundtrack was released on april 19.

2024-04-02 'kaivalya' movie premieres april 18, soundtrack out april 19
christopher terhart´s movie debut titled ‘kaivalya’, an experimental documentary about solitude, premieres on april 18, 2024 at südbahnhof in krefeld, germany. it is announced as a non-verbal and non-narrative piece of cinema features scenes of decay, nature and various places focussing on broken beauty, shot and edited over an nine month period between 2022 und 2023 all over germany. on terhart´s request piayda has scored the movie based upon record of tides tracks from the ‘purchases’ series, which you can also tell by the cover artwork. the tracks have been remixed and remastered and will appear without beats and/or stretched as score of the movie. the original motion picture soundtrack by sven piayda will be released on april 19 on zany music and will be available via. this soundtrack is the first album sven piayda releases under his real name.
terhart states on piayda´s music: it's quite interesting with his pieces. when you first hear them, they often seem too abstract and confusing. the more you get into it, the more it works.

the premiere of the full movie is scheduled for april 18, 2024 at südbahnhof in krefeld, germany. the evening will be hosted by christopher terhart giving an introduction to the scheduled films. terhart has also announced to additionally show a pre-program featuring some minutes of older projects. on terhart’s invitation two further movies by independent directors will be shown next to ‘kaivalya’: the screening will start with 'to smile or not to smile' by bashar al murabea. it is about a man who cannot reveal his feelings but after a stranger gives him a pill to help him do so his life takes a different direction.
it will followed by video artist robin moedder´s ‘change’. it explores on-going processes of climate and the environment, from the innocent beginning to the apocalyptic end. robin moedder is also known for having directed record of tides´ 'deep cruise' music video.

all directors as well as sven piayda are expected to be present.

back in 2023 christopher terhart already directed the promotional video for the track ‘camp finals’ from record of tides’ ‘pieces upon pieces’ album. the video features scenes from the ‘kaivaliya’ movie, the track appears in the movie as well as beatless version.


terhart and piayda have already collaborated on ‘penicilina’ by record of tides. the track ‘vorwegnahme’ was originally produced by terhart a.k.a. monkelmann, piayda turned the track into a longer and more complex version also featuring an acoustic guitar solo.
the spoken work part written by monkelmann adapts a found text based upon conspiracy theories. by reinterpreting and translating it into german language it is turned it into a positive prophecy.
christopher terhart is also known as visual artist mostly known for great infrared photography.

2024-03-22 architects of utter destruction follow-up album ‘unrest’ out now
after a very long waiting period, we are extremely pleased to announce the release of ‘unrest’, the second album of architects of utter destruction. zany music already put out the single ‘no-one listens’ on february 2nd while releasing the promotional video to the song today via youtube. the album features eight songs among an album version of ‘no-one listens’ and was recorded in spring 2023.
the new songs feature architects of utter destruction formed with chris huff (AESTATE, penrose delta, primal scapes) on bass and jan van aachen (primal scapes) on drums. the band´s sound might be a little more transparent and synth driven compared to previous recordings. the band is also working on material for a third album, programming has been done, lyrics will have to be completed. the next album is supposed to feature more contributions by guest musicians. however, piayda announced to have some songs which might appear on a future album.

on christopher terhart´s request sven piayda has scored ‘kaivalya’ based upon record of tides tracks from the ‘purchases’ series. the tracks have been remixed and remastered and will appear without beats and/or stretched as score of the movie. the original motion picture soundtrack by sven piayda will be released on april 19 on zany music and will be available via. this soundtrack is the first album sven piayda releases under his real name. the cover photography was taken by christopher terhart during filming the movie. the album also features two tracks which do not sound in the movie. the music inspired by the motion picture ending as outtakes feature analogue photograph covers by dietmar sturm.

we are happy to announce piayda´s return to galerie an der ruhr. following curator klaus wiesel´s invitation, piayda will return with some works to the upcoming group show 'begegnungen' to be opened in may. the studio is working on a small solo show within a group show, the gadr and the studio will also come up with an auction supporting the asb wünschewagen. sven piayda will contribute a special version of ‘baltic friend’ (see above). the 24 x 18 cm piece will be part of the upcoming art show and available within the charity auction. we will appreciate your bids! more soon!

‘playground magrathea’ is the fifth album of the ‘purchases’ series, the album is supposed to be the legit follow-up to 'pieces upon pieces’ (2023) while using sample-based post-hiphop and idm production.
it contains already known tracks like ‘hyperbowl’ and ‘easy shredding through the days’. the videos for these tracks as well as the album artwork is (co-)created by long-term collaborator chris huff.
the album also features ‘free (alternaitve version)' feat. jan-dirk platek and was originally produced back in 2022 for their common ep 'boxes', here the track is finally presented in a record of tides album context as alternative, maybe even better version.

2024-03-03 cover design panel discussion at ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen

on january 20 the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen opened the 'hipgnosis.breathe.' exhibition exploring album cover art and photo design by aubrey powell & storm thorgerson and celebrating 50 years 'the dark side of the moon'.
hipgnosis, the legendary british photo design studio founded by pink floyd friends aubrey powell and storm thorgerson, designed some of the most famous record covers in music history between 1968 and 1983. for pink floyd 'atom heart mother', 'wish you were here' and 'animals', among others. for led zeppelin 'houses of the holy' and 'presence', for genesis 'the lamb lies down on broadway' and for peter gabriel 'car', 'scratch' and 'melt'. record icon 'the dark side of the moo'n just turned 50 years old! in total, more than 415 cover designs have been created.
the exhibition of the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen was curated in cooperation with the browse gallery berlin and aubrey powell. the show will be on display until may 20, 2024.

escorting the show, the museum invites to a special event on sunady, march, 17: 'crossing boundaries: cover design panel discussion' with fabian elsäßer (cultural journalist deutschlandfunk/swr) and sven piayda as hosted by dr. sarah hülsewig (curator of ludwiggalerie). here elsäßer, hülsewig and piayda will discuss the work of hipgnosos as well as the connection between cover design and music. above you see a collection of pictures of piayda presenting numerous cover designs he created for record of tides over the years.

above you see a picture of aubrey powell next to his gallerist during the opening of the show. piayda attended the opening and already wrote in the journal: the museum invited me to the show opening and as I am part of it somehow I thought I should go there. it was a fantastic opening actually, meeting old friends. I was not really a fan of hipgonisis, but I was afterwards actually. the team came up with brilliant ideas concerning cover design which I knew from the designers republic, but these ideas obviously appear a lot older… aubrey powell attended the opening and came up with brilliant anecdotes on paul mccartney, black sabbath and robert plant. a brilliant show that attracts music nerds (like me) as well as artists and designers (like me) and is a door opener to the hipgnosis universe.


sven piayda might be best known to ludwiggalerie visitors for his contribution to the 'let`s buy it / kunst und einkauf' 2017 group show. back in the day he contributed 'duracell video after vom bruch and fibonacci', a piece which is also part of the museum´s collection.

christopher terhart´s movie debut titled ‘kaivalya’, an experimental documentary about solitude, is now set for release. it is announced as a non-verbal and non-narrative piece of cinema features scenes of decay, nature and various places all over germany, focussing on broken beauty. on terhart´s request piayda has scored the movie based upon known and previously unreleased record of tides tracks from the ‘purchases’ series. these tracks have been remixed and remastered and will appear without beats and/or stretched as score of the movie. the soundtrack is supposed to be available via bandcamp parallel to the movie´s release.

the premiere of the full movie is scheduled for april 18, 2024 at südbahnhof in krefeld, germany. the movie will be available for streaming on april 19, 2024. zany music has announced to release the soundtrack on the same date. more info on the premiere to be announced soon.

the spoken work part written by monkelmann adapts a found text based upon conspiracy theories. by reinterpreting and translating it into german language it is turned it into a positive prophecy.

there have been rumors and plans, it took some months in production and distribution, but the electric café podcast is finally here: a two-hour radio program that the collective electric café ruhr has produced especially for internet radio/podcast. it presents 17 tracks of various electronic music styles featuring primal scapes and record of tides: from ambient to classic electronic music, from faster tracks to experimental experimental pieces - created by the members of electric café ruhr and some of their friends. the program also offers information about tracks and artists as well as an interview with the founders. a big thank you to jörg jankowitsch and michael schreiber!

on sunday, january 14, the forum kunst und architektur at kopstadtplatz essen opened its first group show this year. ‘einsicht’ deals with the tension between cognition and giving in. the show also features sven piayda´s 2022 video piece ‘skull and fish’, an endless variation of randomly combined cgi sequences of a fish studying an human skull. the work has already been on display at kunst.werden during his solo show ‘needle in the multiverse’. you can find more information on the piece in the press kit. the group show at forum kunst und architektur was opened on sunday, january 14, see picture above.

birte-marie loehr & jan kromarek aka RECONQ have once again assembled works of mülheim based artists for the 2024 calendar of ‘mülheimer künstler für kinder’. this year sven piayda´s ‘maritime cousin’ (2023) is featured among numerous remarkable works. the ring binder is available from the museum shop of kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr at a price of 10 euro. the profits will be donated for children in need.

we are also happy to announce that the donated profits have been invested already: the erich kästner school in mülheim an der ruhr finally received hundreds of books selected by the staff. the school didn't have a proper library before, with a great deal of personal effort and help from outside, it is now complete. the official handover will take place on january 29 at 10 a.m. with the participation of the press and representatives of the city.

as just seen on the zany music site, the new record of tides album ‘playground magrathea’ is scheduled for february 9, 2024. it contains already known tracks like ‘hyperbowl’ and ‘easy shredding through the days’. the videos for these tracks as well as the album artwork is created by long-term collaborator chris huff.
plus: sven already wrote in his blog that he is working on a new album after the upcoming one: more or less accidently I started a new record of tides album and have already finished 12 tracks already. it just happens when I hang out with different laptops on the couch, layering samples to a weird post-whatever sound. it just happens.
also we are delighted to tell that michael schreiber announced to do the mastering once again. have a look at the growing purchase series over here.

there have been rumors and plans, it took some months in production and distribution, but the electric café podcast is finally here: a two-hour radio program that the collective electric café ruhr has produced especially for internet radio/podcast. it presents 17 tracks of various electronic music styles featuring primal scapes and record of tides: from ambient to classic electronic music, from faster tracks to experimental experimental pieces - created by the members of electric café ruhr and some of their friends. the program also offers information about tracks and artists as well as an interview with the founders. a big thank you to jörg jankowitsch and michael schreiber!
digital reissues of the AESTATE ‘greatest hits’ (2015) album as well as remix compilations ‘patch’ (2010) and ‘prov aiida ep’ (2011) returned to the net. the reissues are available via zany music and downloadable for free via zany load, they will not be distributed via bandcamp for different reasons. zany music did a makeover on the meta data written into the files and will offer them in reliable zip format. the reissues contain the original mp3 files in original release quality. additionally, the /CAMP exclusive live recording ‘performance’ is offered on the /CAMP with corrected meta data. as phil barnett and sven piayda have announced to work on a new collaborative project again, zany music has announced to do a second reissue series as the remix albums feature four common tracks by barnett and piayda. back in 2021 zany music reissued the three AESTATE albums containing bonus tracks and live excerpts.

2024-01-12 forum kunst und architektur ‘einsicht’ show opens this sunday
on sunday, january 14, the forum kunst und architektur at kopstadtplatz essen will open its first group show this year. ‘einsicht’ deals with the tension between cognition and giving in. the show also features sven piayda´s 2022 video piece ‘skull and fish’, and endless variation of randomly combined cgi sequences of a fish studying an human skull. the work has already been on display at kunt.werden during his solo show ‘needle in the multiverse’. you can find more information on the piece in the press kit. the group show at forum kunst und architektur will be opened on sunday, january 14 at 3 pm. piayda is expected to be present.

the show features works by the following artists: iris bieschin, tabea borchardt, rené dietle, carola engels, gabriele fengels, künstler:innengruppe die weisse wand, regina friedrich-körner, dirk gaydoul & lutz schlössmann, petra göbel, peter güllenstern, ulrike janßen, marlene kapitza-meyer, suria kassimi, rené kersting, thiemo kloss, marcel kreuzer, kristin loehr, mara niederprüm, angelika oedingen, dietmar paetzold, sven piayda, andrea rathert-schützdeller, silja riethmüller, gabi rottes, walter schernstein, eva schmeckenbecher, stephan paul schneider, daniel schubert, marina skepner, ronald stöcker, fred-louis von oettingen and tobias wyrzykowski.

the exhibition will also feature author´s readings on january 28, 4 pm and workshops for kids on january 17 and 21 from 4 to 6 pm. (registration is requested). the show will close on february 4.

first of all: happy new year to all of you. this year we are happy to present many familiar names in this category: this year once again musician and entertainer dean blues (a.k.a. prjct fear), contemporary artist and collaborator matthias danberg, global thinker and local activist grischo schlüsi as well as teaching movie director and vinyl addict dietmar sturm - next to sven piayda - tell their favourite and most played albums of the year 2023.

this is the last picture of piayda performing live open air during a summer night in duisburg, taken on september 28, 2023. there haven’t been any performances or appearances afterwards. nevertheless, we hope for new songs by architects of utter destruction to be finally released and we hope for live appearances in 2024 to come. cross your fingers!
