2017-12-30 pain for gain: crunch time on lone islands | entry by sven

looking back is pretty strange this time. I am thankful for many moments and people I was allowed to share time with, but the big main issues remain disillusioning. this year was coined by two main issues, also cutty the year into two parts: on the one hand the ‘crunch time’ offensive, my last approach to find gallery representation and the accident leading to a pilon fracture. I was taking all these issues sportsmanlike, but the longer things take, the more you feel like in a dead end.
working on finding a gallery gave me a lot of insights and something to work on as well as the cognition that talk is cheap and often meaningless. also, even if things happen, they will not lead to something. the is no holy grail anyway. I was always trying to be part of the scene to meet and maybe make friends with people being interested in the beyond of the surface, but I was looking for it at the wrong places. when you realize it is just about profit and has nothing to do with relationship of people working on a common goal, you accept the sociopathic rituals and end up asking yourself what you are doing (while there is no profit making the challenge woth it). once again, the idea of a gallerist working for the artist and the artist being loyal to the gallerist is a myth. In the beginning of 2017 I started to seek for it and in the end I was trying to get away from it. a pretty strange journey.

the second issue of the year was a bike accident, I cannot remember why, I started to use my old bike again. I did not come too far, in the siepen, a kind of park surrounding a small brook, the blue laces of my adidas superstar suddenly started to untighten and winding around the pedal. it fixed my foot on the pedal forcing me to loose balance and to dropped like a pile of laundry. I slided down a slope hitting bushes and nettles.
an anecdote I must have told a hundred times, sounding more and more stupid every time.
the whole thing was followed by hospital, an operation (another one still ahead), the summer spend on the couch and an on-going periostitis from overstressing physiotherapy that is really giving me depressions. the doctors did not really help while not getting the phenomenon based upon the events. however, i´m physically and mentally in a low condition, I still hope to get back to sports, but it is an endless story of hope, desperation, pain and incomprehension. cross your fingers.

2017 has also been the year of islands. I had the chance to discover texel in february which was great. In october we finally got to england, a larger island with a huge impact. the third island was my couch, the one which was sorted out from a friend´s parent´s home ending up in my living room and becoming my island.
there was a lot of time spending on my own, being confronted with yourself is never easy, but after a while I enjoyed solitude, discovering a lot of music from my idm heroes available on the net and inspiring me to work on record of tides again. on the other hand I fear solitude, the drifting apart, the feeling of not getting noticed combined with the feeling to have problems making friends. but it is not a problem of missing people around me, it is more about a growing lack of ability to really connect. I feel solitude even among people, even in relationships. don´t get me wrong, i d not want to sound too depressed, there is just a lot up and down here.

this year in retrospective is not as bad as it may look like, it could be worse, no doubt, and everyone has issues I do not want to have so it is still okay and i am thankful. nevertheless, getting back to my former physical resilience is a long way escorted by fear of never getting back. also I need to come up with a vision for my professional life, may art career and my private life. I feel like a drifting boat hoping to end up on a sunny beach while realizing the chance is decreasing rapidly.
am I complaining on a high level? I feel a lot of issues redundant, even discussion them on the journal is supposed to help me solving it, recently I feel like being captured in a loop. I thought about quitting and closing the blog, I even thought about quitting showing art and turn away from the disappointing scene but it is hard to fill the gap. the question of sense is hovering above all, a giant question mark putting enough pressure to freeze me in panic.
this year also made me and everyone else realize that I am for four decades on this planet. for the first time I feel old, because of my physical condition and my age. like everyone else in my age we feel like we have set our lives on a track with a train running fast without conductor. we have decided for our directions decades ago without knowing where these tracks may lead to. too pathetic for your liking? so what about you?

now let´s go for some fun fact: above you see me in the lulworth cove, pretty strange to see me in this strange place, sand grains as big as potatoes, one more beautiful than the other. england was a true discoverey form me. and we´ll be back one day.

once again, the accident site in the siepen. I still ask myself why the hell I was going for a ride. I was asking myself if there was a silent humming oft he atoms predicting it, I wonder if there was a warning I could not hear, I wonder if I could have avoided it, I wonder what went wrong and what I did wrong. a stupid anecdote that opened a can of worms for me. I am so fed up with it.

direct aftermath and it´s few appearances on photo: out with crutches and home with frida. not everything was bad about it.

the show at ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen was great and an appearance on the great stage for me. plus: everyone working there is friendly, interested and open-minded, so the show was escorted by an interview for the blog and an artist meet and greet. let´s do that again from time to time!

making and releasing music with my project record of tides also means for me to play live again. there are things in the pipeline but it is still tricky to bring beautiful electronica on stage. I hope for one or two live gigs in 2018, maybe a dj set. cross your fingers. something will be going on anyway.

getting out sometimes. even after going to openings for years (because i really like it) we managed to visit an opening in the netherlands: 'the straw that broke the camel’s back by jerry kowalsky at oda park. the dutch know how to turn things into fun: you are welcomed with a drink voucher (cafe, tea, wine beer...) and the opening speach replaced by an on stage artist talk with the audience coming up with questions. i am still not sure if i like kowalsky´s sculptures, but it was worth to get the question enyway. nevertheless i am really in love with the park, it is strange, surreal and touching like a beautiful nightmare.

the 2017 ruhrpreis was awarded to klaus urbons. it is a great choice and the spooky awareness that my ceremony was a year ago. I remember my nervousness, watch someone else getting an award is so much more relaxing and you can concentrate on the catering and the free sparkling wine.

watching more awardees at the fadbk, natalija usakova and me assembled to the show deciding to simply enjoy without questioning it. once again catering and a good time.

this winter with snow made me realize that I can see a tiny bridge over the siepen brook from my kitchen window. isn´t that romantic?

galerie gublia opend in spring 2017 in essen, i was checking out what was going on there and gallery head irma gublia and me talked about making a show together. I was sceptical because of my crunch time experience but Irma has a true interest in making a good show. we will come up in february with something great, we are busy recently, I hope to see you there!

‘spirit with thorne’ made a big impression at the kunstmuseum mülheim in the beginning of 2017 and will be part of the upcoming show at galerie gublia. however, this boy seems like an omen dealing with my main issue of this year. nevertheless, I think it is a good piece.

and yes, i wanted to rest and do nothing, well you know how it is. you come up with an idea and are surprised if you are asked to put it into action. it started with a sketch and is now taking shape, we are going into last corrections and will present a beautiful catalogue soon!

getting out: short before christmas I met dean blues in a pub, hang out after four years again. dean is a talented blues musician with ambition, also one of my former students, however, we are planning to record and put out music together for years now and will take it more seriously in 2018. promised!

new years eve is always a struggle. find a cool party to get drunk? we spent new years eve 2014 in luxemburg and visited the mudam on january 1 at 11am, see above. to lame for your thinking? well, a little bit more inspiring than a hangover. this year will be started in the ruhr area, still looking for a good show to visit on the first day of the year.

have a good start in 2018, let´s set sail for new discoveries!

2017-11-07 tate britain: free for all, but not for everyone | entry by sven

when I had the chance to go to london and to spend just one day here it was obsolete to also visit a museum. london offers a lot, but you have to decide on one if you want to make a serious visit. tate britain appeared to be a great choice: tate! and the british version focussing on british art!
in england, museum entry is free. there is a common sense that the english believe that people behave properly in venues if they have not paid for it, so they are guests and guests usually behave well. the banner appears inviting: free for all! there is no reason to not join…

I can hear you cheering: free entry in museums is the best and we need it in germany, too. It will open culture to economically weak people, offering them the cultural heritage and monitor of the nation and the world. also you have to keep in mind that museums won´t keep running just by the tickets sold, they are just some extra money but they are not really dealing with the needs of a museum. so why not skip the financial issue and bring in the people. what could be wrong with this idea?

so you can enter tate britain for free (after a security bag check) and you quickly realize that you enter for free but certain things need to be paid or donated. I heard stories before that the requests for donations are pretty offensive, indeed, donation boxes everywhere. sometimes they even tell you how much to donate: ‘donate four pound to keep tate britain free’. well, after being confronted again and again you whish to have bought a ticket directly instread of being pushed to give your money voluntarily. the term ‘free’ has truly changed a lot here.
one of the reasons I decided for tate britain was the rachel whiteread show on display. unfortunately, his show was also not free, tickets are available for 17 pound. as there was only one day in london to spend being lucky with summeresque wether, buying a ticket for such a high price was not an option. even if I would have had more time, 17 pound are pretty tough, even for an enthusiast that I am. well, free for all, but not for everyone – or everything.

nevertheless, even if you do not donate (what I did) and do not buy the whiteread ticket, you can discover a lot great and classic stuff in the museums open collection. even here the security is invisible, visitors are also young and behave. maybe culture is a part of their everyday life…

before I come up with some more impressions of the inside, I’d like to share an info graph I have found illustrating the interest in art and culture of people in germany in 2016. What you see here is that only a very small part is truly interested, the majority is not interested or having a low interest. this might lead to the question of it is still legal to invest money in issues in which the majority of people in a democratic country are not interested in. this might also lead to the question if art and democracy have something in common at all, and what is the common culture of the people making democratic decisions by majority. maybe art is just something no one really cares for and a playground for just a small group of people who do not have other problems to solve and having too much money. however, money and art (or culture in general) have a tricky relationship. no one really wants to invest, but no one dares to drain it dry.
keep this info graph in mind when you think about relevance of a certain work. and think of tate britain when you wonder where money for culture comes from. however, you have to pay for it, by ticket, donation or taxes and there is nothing wrong with it, even if the art is questionable, bad or brilliant. strict democratic investment will lead to something very flat, I am pretty sure only soccer and trash tv will remain…
i can even tell that contemporary art is getting more and more flat, eye candy for the galleries, moralized statements for biennials and referential standards for museums. after a quantum leap on the 20th century we are now a facing a deep fall off. however, unleash the potential and decouple it from the money issue. skip the greed for profit and replace it by sense and direction.

the collection: a calm place, always having guests. you can spend time here and even draw yourself. a great way to present art feeling natural. people accept it, they are not taught something, they are offered to make discoveries. I believe in intrinsic motivation.

even if you are not into art, the architecture is super impressive. here is a snapshot of the dome, a picture everyone visiting must take.

one foot in the future. you know my scepticism concerning (and flirting with) post conceptional and post internet art. tate britain shows simeon barclay and as you can see, it is the same random mash-up like seth price or jordan wolfson. I like the technology used creating these works, also the method to adapt things. but once again, the sum of all combined pieces is less than it should be. everything is available, everything is remixed, but what the hell is it pointing on? a soup of remains that is mot tasty at all…

another picture of me in the halls of tate. unfortunately, you cannot the freely accessible works by rachel whiteread. We agree that she is telling the same joke over and over again, however, it is a good one. appreciated and recommended.

2017-11-01 off to england: same as home, just the opposite | entry by sven

as you might know after reading my last entry I was not spending too much time outside, so as things are getting a bit more mobile again time was up to visit the british island. england has been on schedule for years now, and recently there were no reasons for delay anymore. after the stressful birthday parties I was really ready for some time off, even more ‘off’ than just staying at home and doing what you always do…

I am pretty much fed up again, of the art scene and the daily rituals, so I needed to get away. nevertheless, I am thankful for my friends, also because they keep reminding me of what I have already achieved, helping me seeing my success through the eyes of others. but you know how it is, you cannot be proud of something you did last year, probably being already forgotten. the mountain top is always in front of you.

recently I focus of being away and probably to teaching again (with appears meaningful after all) so I decided to come up with some pictures of me in and at the chelsea college of arts / university of the arts london. so I do not study or teach here, but it was cool to breath the arty air among the well dressed students in the university´s cafeteria.

going to england is great. indeed, things appear similar, but are honestly a little different: the own currency, driving on the left side, distances in miles, round door knobs - sometimes it seems that they just do things differently to define the autonomy (which even more protected by the fact of being an island). also the english are all friendly all the way, and they probably mean it. it was strange and warming to simply change smiles with people on the streets or to get into a conversation – not only in the pubs (where you pay at the bar without tips and have no or only quiet music)…
there is a saying that came to my mind again and again: ‘there is nothing more great for an englishman than standing in line’. i always thought that this saying is a bit condescending, actually it discovers a great strength of a nation: being relaxed and collaborative, knowing that celebrated egoism would not take you any further. even in queues on highways and tight streets, the english behave and keep relaxed with makes it pleasant to drive on the left side as well… (and after having escaped a few times from battles on belgian motorways I would claim that that the calm british behaviour helps a lot to dissolve the traffic jam again)
sometimes it is even weird. the english often give you the feeling of standing in the way. Suddenly someone stands behind you, saying thank you when you step aside and let them pass by- even when you stand on an empty place for minutes, someone´s behind you waiting for you to offer space. a strange phenomenon. also, the English dress well. there seems to be no trend or fashion to follow, people look very different actually, but you can see that each and everyone has an idea of what he or she wants to represent. even extreme styles do not trigger staring people, the island seems to be the realm of the individual within the society. peaceful coexistence seems to be a great maxim here.

once again, I am impressed by the country and its residents. especially in london you can feel the history expanding over centuries contrasting to many up-to-date people with wireless headphones staring isolated into their smartphones. the red double-decker busses pick you up all the time getting through the traffic jam on their own lane, being a city typical must-see and a contemporary way to reach places… it is contemporary, knowing it´s part while pointing into the future…

the english are a proud nation. I realized hearing much music all around, but obviously strictly by english artists. even tv commercials are often based upon a quite different cover version songs by originally english artists, remembering a choir version of fatboy slim´s ‘praise you’ and a dog singing queen’s ‘flash’.

culture seems to be save on the island, even the past is present. without searching for it, next to contemporary pop music you will be able to listen to queen and bowie – without searching for it. the nation’s culture has a realm on the island, even british art has got it´s tate britain. (more soon) why don´t we have a strong culture and common sense on germany?
(whenever the german term ‘leitkultur’ pops up I get aware that we are a an empty container craving for cultural identity we actually and obviously do not have. going to england was like experiencing how it looks like the other way around…)

of course, you have to make sure checking out a bunch of must-see points of interests, but sometimes even half-hearted. I do not want what everyone wants, why should i? and once again, if you give in to the big places you might end up disappointed, because they are only special because everyone thinks they are… so let´s focus on culinary art.

we came to england to stay for a couple of days, now we do not see a reason to come back…

you cannot get close to stonehenge, you have to park far away and go by shuttle, but even then you won´t get close. we decided to watch it from the highway, there is always a queue giving you time to watch...

bad timing: big ben needs some maintenance, the bell remains silent and the tower is covered. nevertheless, here it is.

there are jokes about culinary art in england but I am a fish and chips enthusiast, getting the first portion at the sea was the mother-of-all!

one of the places we have already left: the small apartment in the (former) old post office. aquiet place in the middle of nowhere (holcombe).

at first it was strange to discover the dvd collection in a summer cottage, then I liked the idea of watching ricky gervais´’extras’ on my own at night in the middle of nowhere. a surreal, threatening but also hilariously funny set up. this is english tv culture as brought to you by the bbc.

a street in dartmoor: rural england means tight ways and on-going up and down. 20% fall off is pretty common. keep in low gear, well, the english always telly you what to do in a very friendly manner. I great country to find your way, even if you´re foreign or stupid.

going to the pub is great and easy. easy to get a beer, easy to get in contact with lovely people and easy to leave. you´ll find sophisticated, talented and sometimes even stone drunk people here. and: cctv is all around, here you can see me at the bar. thank god, we have that on tape.

english breakfast in brighton. no words! (fantastic, but my physics does not allow to do it every day)

and here is a view in the streets of brighton, very beautiful, sometimes deteriorated, otfen smelling weed. i could live here.

the brighton pier: an everyday fun fair on a pier. I was sceptical first but did not want to leave a little later. check out the gambling machines!

as I am totally keen on english breakfast and fried fish, michi is more into the sweet speciality called cream tea: usually a can of tea escorted by scones with clotted cream (and jam). needless to say that a bakery product combined with milk fat and fruit sugar must be tasty. we hat about three cream teas over the week wondering how the english stay in shape.

banksy in brighton. we also witnessed another big one in dover showing a worker hammering off a star of the european flag. while the yellow press comes up with a new theory of his real identity, I believe that he does not exist actually but is the product of a creative group creating these brilliant works. after wondering who you can place these precise and large scaled works on house walls a new theory came to my mind: maybe banksy is not eve the enemy of the established but a national sanctuary launched by the government pretending to be an outlaw jut to attract tourists…

however, these are just some impressions and thoughts I wanted to share with you, more soon, probably…

2017-10-03 the man who fell to earth (and broke a leg) | entry by sven

this funny headline had been drifting around in my head since I´ve returned from a dreamless narcosis staring at the wall of in my room in the hospital. it is a story which is as boring as surprising. I had great plans for the long pentecost weekend: going to a club, making a barbecue and just hang around in the sun. however, I tried to make a nap on the friday before going to the club but I clould not fall asleep. so I decided to go for ride with my bike, actually after a five year pause of biking facing my second little tour. I realized I could not use my right food properly anymore, there was pain but for me hard to tell how hard it is. I returned to the bike like a dog, the residents nearby must have seen me crawling around, wondering what is wrong with me. they called an ambulance and took care of my bike.

the emergancy statoin put me to x-ray the leg, while I was still expecting the doctors to tell me that I can go home, the x-ray revealed an impressive fracture of the pilon. this strange day was followed by a three-hour-surgery, a one-week-stay in hospital, four months at home, months of physio therapy (which is still going on), splin shints from overstressing physio, a bad general condition and the feeling to be ripped out the everyday life, its routines and believes of what is important.

the whole thing is annoying, not really too painful but actually not allowing you to do what you usually do. I started to make a list of what I was missing, so many events, openings, art shows and concerts. so this is my list of missing: erwin wurm opening at lehmbruck museum, BoBienale, documenta, clowns und pferde openings, white nights, first group show at opening kunstverein bochumer kulturrat, play festival, juicy beats, open source festival, abstract photography led by ralf rassloff, performance at irma gublia gallery, internship visitations, moelmsch open air/mittwochsreihe, bochum total, park sounds, poetry slam in the gruga, gruga fun fair and moelmsch open air after show party.

but here comes a twist. when you are in a scene, system or relationship you may sometimes think that there is no other way. after being ripped out of it violently and missing stuff for two month you start to wonder what you have been missing at all.
maybe this is a door to escape. the art thing can control you like you are driven, you take it so serious, and when you have to look at it from the outside it looks like a joke for bored people. to quote the nameless narrator of ‘fight club’ after moving in with tyler durden into the shanty villa: after a while you do not miss the lost things anymore. there must be more than the approach to create something that I consider as great and push it into a scene full of people being interested in the scene – not what it is originally all about. there must be more.

I spent the summer with diving into the recent aphex twin catalogue, the pre-warp era of boards of canada tapes and rare brothomstates mp3s. I put all on my mobile and plugged in the headphones while drowsing outside the house. probably not the worst was to spend summer days. I was drifting into mind bokeh, especially during the second half of an old boc live set. it ended up making a midi-based record of tides album. it started when I returned home from hospital but being still bound to the couch. after editing over and over again I added some guitars, bass, glockenspiel, down-pitched drums and stretched sounds to just a few tracks and avoid mastering for a maximum of dynamics. midi-controlled sounds are great but adding sounds that are not fixed on the pattern grid makes it far more vivid. the result is great, still smooth but with an underlying aggression, actually somewhere between afx and boc but as my very own interpretation. it will be out in 2018, hopefully. and I can imagine these tracks to function live as well, let’s see. It is all in it hip hop, rock, ambient and the weird stuff…

I often talked and wrote about reducing my ambitions in the art scene, being forced to drop out and letting go led to a dislike of the scene (old artists craving for relevance, ridiculous off-spaces and galleries, filled to overflowing scene with artists without concept or skill, all pushing into the slots I want to get it. It is like fishing: too much by-catch ruins the sea and offers less and less of what you actually left the harbour for.) the greed for profit, relevance and lifestyle has erased all indices for quality. everything is art, nothing is art. looking back I feel that I did not miss something at all…

watching the (big) scene from afar and getting more and more sceptical, finding a schism in art (nailed by wolfgang ulrich´s essay). even local gallerists use the terms ‘museum art’ and ‘gallery art’ while ‘museum art’ is believed to be less commercial and hard to sell. well, when I started doing art I believed that museum shows push up sales and gallery appearances made it attractive for museums, but these times are over, obviously. indeed, good museum shows are complex and must be discovered sober while the gallery usually escorts it´s zombie paintings with sparkling wine and beer (which is sometimes the only reason to show up anyway…) you might get the idea that gallerists do not trust in the intellect of their clients – and profits proof them right. to go back to the art schism phenomenon and creating an answer to it, may lead to two options: to produce for the museum and to produce for the gallery. it took long to realize that the people who like I think about art and those purchasing it are not the same anymore. both seek for a certain lifestyle but with a different budget and a different approach concerning depth. the other answer to this schism is get away and stay away from it at all.

I have thought about pausing from it all for years now, my situation forced me to do a tiny pause. I miss some things that I will go back to, but every addiction gets boring after a while, you have to increase the dose or stay abstinent. I guess I have done both now.

I do not want to overstress drama here, but I believe in event and change. I sometimes felt like an astronaut, not being able to make usual movements and facing solitude, I also had to think of tom hanks in ‘castaway’. a great movie, no doubt, but I always thought it was suspicious when he returned from the lone island after years and cuts his beard and hair slipping into his style-free clothes like he wants to pretend that he continues where he left. I know, the character is about to learn that the world went on without him, but I could not believe that you go though a major transformation for years and try to whip it away quickly. is there a returning to the pre-event self? or am I just the product of my environment? I feel that I have travelled a lot, to the mind bokeh and to the edge of the galaxy. I had a three-hour-narcosis, a dreamless sleep. It did not feel dead, but it could have been. there is black mirror at the edge of the galaxy, showing only what you´ll bring, absorbing unnecessary details but exploring the core. I felt disappointed when I realized that I am far less important to the world than I thought, without any narcissism or sadness. so this journey has taught me a lot, the lack of importance for others sets me free a lot. and the future is obvious: less art, less work, less conflict. more bokeh, more art that I want to be surrounded with and space for the incubation of great ideas. I am off the grid now.

spending time with yourself makes you form plans that function in your head separated from your everyday life and i´m curious how much will follow me into reality when I go back to so-called normality. the hardest part is the confrontation with yourself, as an artist you are oscillating between self-hatred and narcissism. once again I am very happy with the stuff I do, because this is what I would like to see in museums and galleries, even knowing it is getting more and more difficult for stuff which is too complex. making shows has been important to me in the last decade but it is no longer that important to me. the work exists anyway and you are lucky if you have my stuff in your show. there are alternatives for a scene exploring a schism to cover its clumsiness; the creative artist is the one to find them.

conclusion: nothing remains, the seeds do not come to blossom. my absence does not leave an empty slot, whose would in my life? our relations are surprisingly superficial and loose; it is embarrassing that you are not able for more. especially us being so creative, sensitive and deep-minded, maybe we are not or it does not mean a thing, so how stupid is that? once again you learn what you have known before. withdraw from scene, working on enhanced projects. after crunch time: strictly commercial: gallery shows, donations, enhanced projects, rented works and commercial works for sale next to conceptional works for museum shows. no more seeking for deeper meaning or sense here, I must be somewhere else.

flahback humor: i must have been driving too fast, not realizing the changing tempo limit. however, another federal paparazzi attack picture for the collection taken only three hours before the accident that made me not drive a car for about four months.

and this is the place that erased all plans for summer within seconds. appears very beautiful and boring. i remember writing in the journal about the siepen, about how close it is to my house and that i would like to spend more time here, see 2016-08-26 work and leisure in progress and balance (at once) | entry by sven. well, i guess i have recieved what i have been wishing for and i have decided to be more careful with wishes...

when friends were off to summer holliday, they asked us to take care of frida for a while. after two days of feeling strange frida pretended to never have been somewhere else and we fell in love instantly. when you are immobile on the couch it is great to have someone joining you. especially if she is so furry and cuddly!
(indeed, we still consider moving in together.)

have a look at my impressive foot cover and my sexy white thrombosis stockings. it is pure fun to use the crutches to command people and to use them to show where the gardener should have erased the weeds. also it is a great workout for the upper part of the body. plus: everybody stares at you, sometimes asking but getting bored while listening to the answer being three sentences long. you may get an idea how physically handicapped people feel everyday. i shared this experince with a friend in a wheelchair finding out that he faces the same situations every day and sometimes even worse ones.

i have learned to not pretend interest if there is none, also to be thankful for your health everyday. also, not to stare at people unless they perform something for the audience...

things getting better: the cover is gone and i am supposed to move. i love the gruga for its beauty and underlying seventies vibe. also a lot of people on crutches walk around there because of the hospital nearby. (a fact you realize if have some your own...)

next to the deep thoughts on art i have learned a lot about myself and the people around me. i have always considerated me as sociable, but after enough time on your own you do not miss other people anymore, they appear more and more annoying. i had a great change to see clear concerning people around me, having true friends actually and people that will not be worth a thought anymore. it is like moving in a new house, you only need a few things and you throw away the stupid rest.

update: i made it up to the gruga again on sunday, while the left pic was taken in the middle of august the right one documents my return last sunday, october 1and it seems like i have a new favourite tree, like a dog.

spending the summer on the couch also means to strive through the internet and sometimes find something surprising: paul simon uses a brutalist strat similar to my 'susie'. well, susie is actually a lot more beautiful and versatile. the guy on the right is me in 2005 performing in front of yves klein´s blue sponges in the musiktheater in gelsenkirchen with dissident(en) club. after almost 19 years with susie i am considering a head logo for this protoype...

this year is strongly coined with collaborating with the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen, the big show in spring, the artist speed date and the donation for the collection. a very fair and interested museum, i am thankful for what we have achieved together and hope for further episodes. plus did you realize they have a giant faith no more logo in the yard?

even when i could not run around and visit shows i somehow managed to participate in projects, public shows in hamburg and dresden, a group show in france and an upcoming show on sound art in cologne.
i thought about if i might ged bored of solo shows, there is so much effort and money to invest while people are not really more interested or tend to buy more. it is a lot more fun and less pressure to do a group thing. however, this might be my time off the scene, i´ll be back with new work on sale in december, hopefully. if not, maybe later. it is no make or break anymore and i´ll stay invisibe for a while. pretty comfortable.

even the studio is doing the office stuff with no big production going on. we´ll reform things a little and we will have to try new stuff. applications for internships should not come in before next year. seeya, probably.

2017-05-23 a bunch of things back from boxes | entry by sven

recently there is a lot going on, ideas and plans form and fall apart just to form in a new way. there are no special issues to talk about, I have just realized to have collected some pictures waiting to be posted and commented, so I think the journal might be the best place for this.

the first half of the year was coined by the the big ‘let´s buy it / kunst und einkauf’ exhibition, above you see me in the basement of the ludwiggalerie during a visit last weekend. fortunately the museum is interested in my work, unfortunately it seems to be rocket science to place a laser print on a transparency. however, we´re restructuring the studio anyway, let´s see where it is going to come out… however, there is a lot of ‘crunch time’ movement going on, we will need to place some official decisions soon.
well, I have promised some pictures, here we go.

‘self-portraits with VIPs’ and looking for old pictures are things that sometimes come to mind of composer michael em walter. so he send the upper pic above to me showing us at the art cologne in 2006. we look pretty young and naïve, still believing to become rock stars. after long years of going through rock star issues we met up last week, also to take a picture, as seen below. we pretty much look like post-everything, both finally in our post pop star period making serious culture. we have talked about the possibilities of collaborating from time to time, but I do not really see it coming. nevertheless I had the idea for a common dj set, mr walter still needs to think about it…

more meeting: last friday I had the chance to meet andreas buttweiler aka mogwai, best known as dj, radio host and kreislauf.org netlabel boss. we started to work together since 2013 when we put out the AESTATE ep ‘sum falls’. up to now we have put out four releases together, including the reanimation of record of tides. meeting was great and a proof for us to plan future collaborations together. getting in touch with people you only know digitally is a true risk, but here we have discovered seeking for similar things in music and placing it. without spoiling too much, we are focussing on the new record of tides release now, which is – according to andreas – strongly awaited. more news soon!

ROCKET! being a big star wars fan all the way I have to accept that it is going down in a flood of franchise and stupid movies. I was pretty happy for ‘rouge one’, but the new trilogy will probably destroy the myth completely, the target group has probably shifted to younger ages, so it makes perfect sense to offer nearly every spaceship as lego model. fortunately we have discovered ‘guardians of the galaxy’, the debut was a blast and even the sequel pushed the right buttons, maybe this the new star wars for my generation, playing with references to our childhood and youth presented in elaborated humour. instagram has proved that brian may attended the the gotg2 premiere in london and turned out to be a big fan, this makes it perfect. keep it coming. by the way, I want a queen song on the next soundtrack!

making shows has been more important to me in the past, visiting openings on friday nights is so relaxing. some weeks ago I returned to irma gublia, we are also talking about options and we have started to draw some concepts, but we will see where it may take us. above you see a typical ‘visitors during opening speech’ snapshot as cut out from a larger picture. the artefacts give anonymity back to the people, but you won´t have problems to identify the big handsome guy on the left…

a moody snapshot from mülheim downtown as visiting it for a walk, it is ugly and beautiful at the same time and it has a bike highway. this is what the rheinruhrmegaplex feels like. just for your records.

before I forget: mr walter reminded me not to skip posting the picture above, a snapshot of a metropolitan composer enjoying his cigar stepping by in gelsenkirchen shortly before traveling to a premiere of his new work in france. bon voyage!

uptade 2017-05-24: the fame monster: mr walter just shared a 'double exposure' (actually just a mirrowing). this quoting ping pong is a funny game of us, see this one or this one.

uptade 2017-05-24: David Claerbout: OLYMPIA: watch the live broadcast of the real-time disintegration of the berlin olympic stadium into ruins over the course of a thousand years. (in case you haven´t made any plans yet...

2017-05-01 art cologne #51: multi-coloured post-conceptional | entry by sven

for the 51st time the art cologne opened its gates once again to give an overview on available artworks and the globally successful artists and dealers. actually the annual opening delivered an even more important phenomenon about its relevance. I have learned and accepted over the years that it is not about culture or concepts and i consider it as suitable to celebrate the commercial side of the global culture. all of this digital reporting have worked out that next to the galleries and their ware it is the need to be there and part of it. and it is necessary to be the first to post a pic on instagram, earlier than anyone else, grinning, if possible with an (important) gallerist (also grinning). the eraly bird thing seems to be so seductive that there are pre-openings (or even pre-pre-openings) and it is only logical to skip sunday for opening. so the pic above has been done while leaving, maybe this is not the first, maybe the last view on the halls…
once again, even here the revelation is in the meta data.

I have been attending the art cologne long enough to have went through it in different constellations, alone, with different friends and even different girlfriends. this year matthias danberg joined me, we share the same tempo while looking at things, often with a similar approach at first but seeking for different stuff. matthias is truly critical, often analytic but also smelling conspiracy where is pure coincidence. generally we share the same impression, the trend has become trash. things appear meaningless, often with strange design gags, multi-coloured mash-ups next to the established stuff. In retrospective nothing really remains. while the post internet movement takes over the galleries are some steps behind, still believing in the surface, without delivering concept or even beauty. it is bank business, it has always been. matthias somehow said that it feels like the titanic, indeed, but we are still waiting for the iceberg.

I am keen to the classics I like so this is what I come up with in detail. but it is no doubt, there haven’t been any new painting or sculptures leaving a deeper impression (except for the price…)

george condo at galerie andrea caratsch is realized immediately and always fantastic, virtuous and funny. matthias said he would be doing too much picasso style in the last time, indeed, his super power is the picasso/basquiat/kindergarden mash-up with a piercing humor.

ansgar carlson at dittrich & schlechtriem is doing great digital surrealism and has now discovered colour and lets call it furniture-esque forms (maybe this is contemporary sculpture). pretty poppy for his standards, but in need to be in focus.

colin snapp at alexander levy is a real discovery striking me directly. the pictures trigger the boards-of-canada-nostalgia, the euphoric believe in scientific progress looks somehow naïve in retrospective, but still with an underlying feeling of a warm childhood memory.

glenn brown at paragon shows some etchings reinterpreting rembrandt motives. matthias is excited and so am i. it is amazing what you can do with a good concept and a great ductus. please realize what you do not find in this work: colour, movement, digital hoax and the need to look hip somehow.

this is us in front of the vip lounge. the art cologne is a place to enter if you want to feel important and also a place giving you a lot of opportunity to not feel important. matthias is even more geeky than me, he even knows about the ‘bunny’ sculpture in the vip lounge…

a piece of art for free: carolin boehning placed snippets of her work next tot he walther könig shop. this attempt appears so helpless and naive that it could be mine. knowing how hopeless this attempt is i guess it is up to me react to her offer the way people have never reacted to mine. in all this over-commercialized set-up, she has made it anyway to get my attention with a way smaller effort than everyone else on the fair. that should be enough to be mentioned and have the website spread: saatchiart.com/rainbowcalla7

a meal for heroes: a snack at the art cologne is a classic joke. meatball, roll and coke for just €9.50. okay, the mustard was free...

another beautiful view of matthias and me reflecting in an artwork. visitors like mirroring pieces to take tilted selfies. we are no exception, but how do they sell?

yet another older paparazzi shot of matthias and me at baustelle schaustelle. as you can see, we always very interested and very critic. more to come.

2017-04-22 just send a sexy robot (and i´ll be there) | entry by sven
view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017

in the last blog post I have reported about the stedelijk´s jordan wolfson solo show ‘TRUTH/LOVE’, my sceptical view on it and the reason for visiting it anyway. (you should read it to get full access for this one). in 2014 I got to know about a work by wolfson and found a view video snippets of a female android, dressed in a tight white dress covering the upper part of her face with a witch mask, speaking and dancing in front of a small audience. this animatronic work is known as ‘female figure’ and was created in collaboration with spectral motion, a company that usually creates monsters for hollywood movies. next to dancing on beat, lip-syncing the songs and speaking pseudo-poetic phrases this sexy robot has another convincing trick to offer. while showing her seven minute performance she is able to make eye contact and really follow you while walking around in the room.

view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017
when I got to know that ‘female figure’ is on display in amsterdam, it was set for me to go there. after looking at wolfsons semi-convincing videos I was delaying the moment of meeting the robot, it felt like meeting an international superstar offering an audience. as the artist only wants to have only a maximum of four people in the room with her, the museum wanted you to book a time slot which we did not do. for a moment we felt like idiots but also too disappointed to leave without seeing her that we decided to tell our situation. however, the guys having booked the upcoming slot did not show up, so we stepped in after being introduced how to behave in the room with her.

view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017
I remember the strange feeling while walking in and realized her eyes looking at me and following me stopping two meters apart from her. after the museum assistants closed the door behind us we found ourselves with two guys in need to film every second with their smartphones (amsterdam is full of people in need to film everything) even knowing the net is already full of snippets of her dance. the great experience lies in the moment of her making eye contact, blinking and even speaking: ‘close your eyes, […] touch is love’. seduction can be reduced to some few basic elements. after seven minutes we had to leave again, I could have spend the afternoon watching and being watched.

view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017
no question, even knowing that this piece is based upon special effect it makes a big impression, even an impact, large enough to make you not wonder if it is great art. after leaving the museum, we were wondering what it is all about, that is the work telling us. I have been thinking a lot about it and without claiming to have an answer I guess there are two aspects in it: at first, I guess that this is what a female figure in sculpture would look today, no nude taking a bath or fourteen-year-old ballet dancer with human hair but a moving dirty dancer dressed as witch on a techno beat. maybe this is contemporary technology portraying the classic theme of a woman. as I consider the work also as futuristic, I like to guess what a female sculpture may look like in a hundred years. will it be made of human genetic material, will it be as close to the natural version that you cannot tell it is an artwork? and what will be the message of this futuristic sculpture, of the artificial being in the shape of a woman addressing words to you? this leads to the second aspect which points back to the previous article and the analysing of the videos: if you listen to the words of ‘female figure’ (spoken by jordan wolfson himself) you will realize the pseudo-depth of her/his words, the regardless choice of songs and maybe the pointless enigma of the mask and the pointy teeth.

view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017
all of it will throw you back to rest of his work and fitting perfectly into it: all the (expensive development of) technology cannot deliver meaning – even after mashing-up meaningful sources. when hegel aims at having more that just the addition of elements, wolfson appears to have less. this may sound bitter, this may be the core of the (future) generation that has overcome the possibility of getting every information at anytime.
nothing remains. …and I was so in love…

however, even in all this criticism i have a huge fascination for animatronic works. some people say that video is the logic follow up to sculpture (what i do not understand at all) but this may be sculpture as follow up to video, making me wonder how to expand my work...

back to stedelijk, probably not for the last time. next to hyper contemporary positions the museum also focusses on dutch design and masters. did i say recommended?

2017-04-20 jordan wolfson: a future gifted and hollow | entry by sven
view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017

since reading that jordan wolfson is going to do a solo show at stedelijk museum amsterdam it was clear that there was in need to return. it is no secret, I am very sceptical about his work and attitude, but I have to respect his success and carrier to be witnessed. the stedelijk seems to be the perfect place for him after showing avery k. singer and jon rafman last year, I reported in 2016-07-29 future art, beach drowsing and busy studio work | entry by sven. (the museum seems to have a favour for the new generation…) back then, i was truly fascinated but in the end not impressed by the post internet or post conceptional movement.
the answer is pretty simple, next to collage objects and videos wolfson started to work with animatronic sculptures, starting with ‘female figure’ in 2014. to cut a long story short, the piece made an impression and I will put the whole story in its own blog post.

wolfson´s show was cut into two shows, we only entered the second one called ‘TRUTH/LOVE’ (the one with ‘female figure’). next the animatronic piece the show features collage prints, objects, flowers taped on the wall and video. his work appears technically brilliant, up-to-date and surprisingly combines things that you would not have expected to find together. his videos feature cgi, cartoon elements and adapted material, being pretty calm for the hip generation. I can even find my own approach here, I suddenly feel that I do not run into the false direction, obviously you can use cgi and stock footage in calm video and be successful, appreciated by collectors and curators. but there is a downside: all this technology and possibility, all this adapting and combining, the demonstration of being gifted in production doesn´t go anywhere. his work combines things that do not belong together and cannot be decoded they way you use to do it. there is no way in, you are rejected to remain at the surface.

do not get me wrong, I really enjoy the feeling of not understanding, the challenge to find the entrance, but his work remains suspicious: even if I do not understand I can smell that there is something to understand (like knowing that there is a nut within the nutshell), wolfson´s accumulation of material appears hollow. maybe this is the key to his work, exploring that all the technology we are familiar with does not enhance the content. maybe it is that simple, maybe the digital generation has access to quotes it does not understand (and is not interested in doing so), looking back on a youth in front of a screen delivering awkward stuff that is now chewed the cud.
still I am not sure if this is it, but I did not found a better approach or text. still a question remains, is this already an artist´s position?

the object of desire: ‘female figure’ (2014) promised to be worth the travel, to outdazzle all the post internet collage hoax. she is definitely worth her own blog post. (coming up on saturday)

view of the exhibition Jordan Wolfson TRUTH/LOVE, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 27 nov 2016 - 23 apr 2017
a view into the exhibition, wolfson plays with different technical possibilities to show video. I wonder if I would have done it the same way, projectors still look better than 4K screens. wolfson shows all screening possibilities like he would knot that art should not simply document the status quo of technology.

amsterdam, beautiful and pulsing. it is a fun fair, even without the fun fair in it... i can only take it for a while. i mean, it was an ordinary tuesday!

2017-04-17 new show concept for post easter | entry by sven

in the last funny blog post I have already reported about the somehow strange connection of good friday and its awesome productiveness. indeed, the days of and around easter are great to calm down, to spend some time with the family and have some extra time to finish productions and fix ideas.
I have been drafting and processing for longer a movie piece called ‘adaptation’ as well as the solo show concept ‘adaptation (your´re mine)’. I hope to make final corrections within the next days and put it out within the next week. the idea for this show concept has appeard at first when I was drafting a new show for a return to the kunstverein bochumer kulturrat. after liking this idea a lot, the realisation appears now a lot more unreal (or too far in the future). the concept has reformed for a new place now, I cannot tell you where it is, if they will turn it down I have to offer it someone else and put it on the /CAMP.

the concept features brand new and known work as composed for aiming at the principles of adaptation, it features text by carsten roth, linda schröer, michael em walter and additions by michaela best and me as contribution for the studio.

I think the new concept is pretty good, flirting with post internet hipness and still delivering the post-post-modernist mash-up. what I like most is the idea, that about 95% are productions without a camera involved but I would still call it post photography…

I still haven’t made it to visit jordan wolfson´s ‘female figure’ in the stedelijk in amsterdam but I made a short trip to iceland. sometimes you have to be spontaneous. with too much extra time and money, you can do some funny things. well, just kidding, this is just a picture taken on a mine heap next to richard serra´s ‘bramme’. some extra processing replaced the green trees with more stoned at the horizon makes it look the way I would consider a pic of me in iceland…

one more good friday capture, this year was pretty non-catholic, no fish but a birthday party with barbecue. I could hear aphex twin´s ‘avril14’ playing in my head… we also missed the easter fires even having many options, we really need to take it a bit more serious next year!

time off means usually to do the things that have been waiting to be done for longer… we have finally started building the bee terrace, a plateau for the hives to be placed and worked on. so this is the status quo interrupted by different customs and other things to be done… it takes some time, but it is pretty serious.

last week jupiter was close to the moon and I did some late night improvised pictures with field glasses and a pocket camera. after some processing and composing the acceptable material this is a pretty good impression of what was to find in the night sky that night.

2017-04-14 the best good friday in the world | entry by sven

the best good friday in the world has become a running gag. of course, good friday is one of the calm custom days, but for me it was classically connected to trips to the netherlands, fish and making a catalogue. pretty strange, uh!?

the story is tracing back to april 2012. i was heading to do my first solo show in a small gallery, the galerie143 in dortmund and i wanted to make it as big as possible. to escort the solo show we decided to make a catalogue presenting even more works than shown in the exhibition. after picking and processing data for weeks we sat down on good friday 2012 and put the catalogue together. later we rewarded us with gratinated tuna at the anyway. i guess we even spend the next day in the netherlands, maybe that was a different year, maybe we just visited the eggxpo...
this day felt good, i got things done and had a good time anyway.

the catalogue did not sell over the gallery and i do not even work with the the gallery anymore. i could be disappointed (and i am for some reasons and certain aspects) but i do not feel to have failed in this certain case. the book is still great and the day making it still feels good.

well, recently i am working on an a show concept with a lot of pictures and texts and it apperas to be as much work as making a catalogue. i hope it feels good in retrospective and lead to something. if it fails, i´ll put it on the /CAMP so it is even somewhere and not in the paper bin.

we ordered a bunch of catalogues being very optimistic. some had been sold even before they appeard in the gallery, so some copies are actually around. if you still want some, you might ask the gallery (i guess you´ll get a good price) or contact me so i can see what i can do for you.

the picture postcards also appeard in big quantities, i guess there still many copies around. well, 'shedhead' is a good piece anyway, timeless and teasing, so one of thes postcars is hopefully travel in a touring exhibition through benelux. cross your fingers!

where to go on easter? the ludwiggallerie schloss oberhausen is offering guided tours on sunday and monday, having opened every day around easter. check out my work!
(all info at the bottom ot this post)

the EGGXPO is this year once again placed at atelier alte kornbrennerei peter helmke (pestalozzistr. 9, 45479 mülheim an der ruhr). here you can buy smaller works from 2pm to 7pm by different artists among kuno lange, kelbassas panoptikum, klaus jost (see picture above) and peter helmke (among others). also it is a good place to have a good time. well, let´s see who will show up.

2017-03-29 silver linings and back in the game | entry by sven

this spring and its plans differ a little. you know that I’m recently questioning what I do a lot, even wondering if there is a need to go this way. after ten years of making shows I feel tired and need to turn things a little bit into serious and commercial directions. I am playing with the idea to scale down the studio, this is what I have to do anyway ending up in the upcoming summer break. there haven´t been plans for autumn at all and I liked the idea to not care what would come up next.
when it comes to talking about the art scene I like to use the metaphor of the poker player (even knowing that this is just covering the commercial side of the phenomenon, not the question of actual and sustaining relevance of my work).

the poker player pays every round forcing him to invest, after a lot investing you may question your success by missing profit and finally questioning the game. I know that making art is first of all something the artist is forced to do, even if I keep the studio closed for a while I have to produce anyway, it I just something I do. you would not consider to quit breathing or talking to people by realizing not to make profit with it. but in all this magic force making you want to create there is the need for audience to make a piece of work complete. and it is a bare fact of our profit, success and media oriented society that publicity is the result of big effort, i.e. investment - once again. this investment can only be legitimated by the smell of profit. it remains a vicious circle. even leonardo da vinci knew this while drafting war machinery.

to cut a long story a little shorter, I am recently negotiating with different galleries, off-rooms and agents. to use the image of the poker player again I can say that my hand of cards is okay and I am back in the game. this does not mean anything yet but some silver linings on the horizon. and even if I am complaining a lot about money, it is just the issue of enabling things. be sure there will still be enough space for non-profit and pure fun projects. in the end it is just about how you spend your time and what you have to say.

it has become a running gag among family and friends to bring old and rejected tv sets to me knowing I can place them to show videos.
I already have a larger collection of 4:3 ratio screens, now we have added a high definition flat screen fitting perfectly to some HD videos I am producing recently.

i was sending greetings from luxembourg´s kirchberg, well, i was not really there but i have the strong need to go back, still it is a tight schedule...

after so many gallery closings in essen it is worth mentioning to see a new one opening: irma gublia opens her showroom in downtown essen and convinced with a big and friendly opening exhibition. this gallery is worth to have an eye on, still i cannot say where it is going to go, nevertheless i witness potential here. i do not know if i can, will be or want to be be involved yet, but it is always good to have things around with potential.
irma-gublia.com

going downtown also brought the opportunity to visit the kasteienstrasse in essen. i stepped into the atelier showroom for some abstract positions but i was actually impressed by the street itself: somehow teasing and ugly at the same time, somehow reminding me of nights in belgium. please note the suddenly ending sidewalk, the alien spaceshipesque skyscraper in the night sky and the black hooker limosine on the right. i could not do better with photoshop.

getting up early sucks but sometimes you´ll find yourself under a red sky, this one reminded me a lot of ‘neon genesis evangelion’, an anime series I was watching in another life.

you might remember sarah bauer, the former blogger of the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen, who did a funny and small interview with me for the blog escorting the current show. even when her work has been very appreciated by museum and readers she decided to quit and make a trip around north america before getting a new job fixing routines. you can follow her trip on her new blog over here.

2017-03-09 same area code but close to big names | entry by sven

it is not a secret that I am recently wondering how to go on, on the one hand I feel a little exhausted in making works and shows, on the other I am seeking new ways to present and sell stuff. actually I do not even take too many photographs recently, even when I can discover new places. above you see me on the ferry boat to texel (actually leaving texel), seaking for time-off, not for pictures.
it is strange, as you can see from the headline, my activities this year appear strange, my name appears in big shows next to picasso or pollock (coming up) but all these museums and galleries have the same area code. it might look big but it is still small – or was it the other way around? when you are doing less shows yourself you watch others doing them and wonder on how they are echoed in the media. more than ever, the belief of value appears to be the only value. are you in or are you out?

visiting texel means visiting exomare: a station recovering young seals. the educative part on the sea and its inhabitants making you wonder if you can learn making art shows by watching a biologically based educative installation.

even if ecomare is primarily based on the work and treating seals we have lost our hearts to dennis and michael, two porpoises. looking like a mixture between a dolphin and a terrier the two non-fishes appeared clever and friendly. two guys that would do anything for a fish, well, does it remind you of someone!?

some more seal pics. also cute, smelling a lot less like fish than expected, and only giving attention as long as there is the hope that you could deliver the next fish…

and here is a goodie for me: when you´re on an island in february on a rainy night you can only spend the evening in a pub. texel has its own beer of course but I was more into something special. while ignoring the ‘dubbel’ while seeking for the ‘tripel’ I found what was in need to come next: ‘quadrupel’ (la trappe). well, the beer sommelier (me) labels it as good. next to all this public work it is good to sit in the dark with a beer.

back to the art scene: dietmar sturm has contributed to ‘heavy rotation’ lists and even some thoughts next to reading the blog. while I am busy writing redundant texts dietmar is more into visualizing with bubbles, see above (click for larger version). here he compares the potato marked to the art scene and how value is put to things. no doubt, the need for potatoes makes it a lot easier to put a value on them, the art scene needs even more institutions to create a price (or value). get the irony, even this blog (even if it criticizes) helps to blow up the scene, a work or a name. you might remember what happened to the financial marked in 2007/2008, a breakdown based upon false believe on static growth. the art scene is same but different: it takes investment to place a work and create a value, destroying it is a lot easier: the disbelief what it is worth would probably destroy the value and the price. disbelieve may be triggered by disappointment, why belief is based upon hope (of common success in pushing culture). I see it coming, the bubble will burst, because the system will disappoint too many people (missing profit or salvation) realizing that there is nothing but belief keeping it together, the disbelieve will finally destroy the prices and the values. the potatoes will remain.

a picture from yesterday morning: while getting up early facing a rainy day the sunrise sky appeared really orange and red, pretty surreal and a lot more intense than usually. facebook proves that I was not the only witness of the is phenomenon.

2017-02-27 worshipping masses of a new religion (no salvation) | entry by sven

it has been a busy start of the year, actually with openings and interviews, a lot (invisible) extra work for making money and no time to get rid of a persistent illness. no sauna, sports or chicken soup could made me escape from this bad cold, so i ended up home, sleeping, cuffing and sometimes thinking. before it got me I had the chance to see gregor schneider´s ‘wand vor wand’ at the kunsthalle bonn. what new can you add to the perception of this genius, this show was big, complex, funny and scary but actually pretty poppy for his own terms (you know, the shock of ‘END’ is still there…). before making it to see the show, I could witness fellow artists and curators visit it on instagram, of course I have added my own i-was-in-the-cool-place-too picture as well. let´s keep this in mind.

on wednesday (before the bad cold forced me down) I decided to spent the afternoon at the ‘rundgang’ at the kunstakademie düsseldorf. I have classically scheduled this for friday night with friends but had to cancel it due schedule difficulties. i knew beatrice richter would be there and happy to hang out with me anyway, so I thought it would be good idea to spent the afternoon as the probably only visitor pretending to be an important collector on exclusive preview. well, this was a remarkably naïve imagination of what would come…

when I arrived in düsseldorf I decided to start relaxed with a cheeseburger and a visit of walther könig´s bookstore. while checking the special offers, a student knowing me watched me through the window and came in to tell me that the visitors are already waiting in line to get into the kunstakademie. and the line was still growing. I was irritated, student´s exhibition, wednesday afternoon, waiting in line – what the hell do people expect to find inside?

there is a strange perception of art these days, but it makes people leave their houses and join something. in the last weeks I have heard a few times the statement that art has replaced religion. this is an interesting idea, but I guess it is a bit to flat. but it is true, watching the principles of the art world might remind you of large religions. there are churches like museums, galleries and even academies, there are priests as known as artists exploring or finding a deeper meaning in things, discovering or making sense and there is a community of visitors documenting their participation and interaction. (even when you´re sick at home, facebook delivers numerous snapshots from every show opening at last weekend and documenting the visitors appears even more important than documenting the artworks.)
it is not a question of too much fantasy: all of this appears pseudo-religious, maybe already fully religious for some. but here comes the twist: all this worshipping, temple building and messiah seeking remains hollow. there is no salvation in art, especially not in the contemporary art of (commercial) winners. the only salvation appears to be fame and profit. well, at least for 3%. and still, that is a pretty lame salvation, isn’t, it?

you watch the hysteria in the peoples’ need to be part of this enlightened community. I would call it ‚hype’, but as it seems to last and to grow as well, you might better call it ‚trend’. nevertheless, the hype around a bubble reminds me a lot the 2008 worldwide financial crash: you could see the disaster coming, but everyone was willing to burn money in belief to invest properly. in this scenario you can sell collapsed houses as new bricks. well, the art bubble is bloating and you know what hast to happen to a bubble in the end...!? remember, there is no salvation.
wow, these apocalyptic thoughts escorting this fantastic view? chilling on the roof of the academy was awesome, even this moment was worth to stand in line.

the most remarkable work I have seen on the rundgang was ‘institution’ by emile v. schlesser. It is not touching or beautiful, I do not even think it is very creative while quoting an approach you might have seen better from alicja kwade. the impressive power of this barefaced piece showing up the archetypes is the plain nailing of everything the art scene is all about: to put a value to you name and make sure it is higher than others. in this academy, gursky is still number one. how do you feel now, professor gregor schneider…!?
(a big thank you to beatrice richter for handing in artist and title!)

this picture is already ten years old. in 2007 I have started to create photographic tableaus the way is still do them now (even in a lot better quality) but I remember selling more even when I did not do shows. It is a pretty strange cognition. I am recently looking for reorientation, for my place in the scene. after running as fast as you can into the same direction for ten years it is time to stop and take a look around. what will have to happen for me to find salvation? you know that i´m recently looking for a new gallery to works with, next to it we are reforming the studio. I have already turned down a few exhibition requests (more than usually), there will be two shows coming up this spring, but there is nothing beyond. I guess we need to concentrate on making really new works, but if I will not find the need to go on with it, this might be it.

this actually feels like a strange déjà vu from 2001. back then as a student I tried to find a gallery (and found a pretty (let´s say) strange one). after making a stupid and horribly organized group show together, the (let’s call him) gallerist forgot my name when I called him asking for further projects even three weeks after closing the show. I felt frustrated and angry, thwarted by the incompetence of others. after the sichtwerk show in 2002 I abandoned the art thing for a simple reason: even if was willing to work hard and to collaborate professionally, I did not have the chance to get into the scene. today it is the same but different: after numerous shows in museums, galleries and off-spaces i still feel like a kid in a sand pit, the real building site seems to be somewhere else. I still feel like a kid who is not allowed to join the game. to cut a long story short: I have the same feeling like about 15 years ago. I may need a break.

it is crunch time: new direction or a longer break? coming up next: 'same aera code but close to big names'

plus: i had the strong need to just get out and hide on an island. actually, it does not really draw me back. more soon.

it is funny sometimes: directing teaching colleague and friend dietmar (check the 2016 heavy rotation list) just sent this clip of diedrich diederichsen lecturing on self-staging in the the social media era. indeed, i find myself in the phenomenon (like many others, read the post above) but it still remains a dilemma: not participating means to not be part of the medial system. i still hope for true interest in others, so i try to come up with tiny features on artitst i like in my blog, and of course, i still hope for true interest in in what i do. it seems to be a crux of out time: you can only report about yourself. but who is listening while being busy with self-staging!?

2017-02-09 still alive and less important: life in blogs | entry by sven

it is a great honor to be chosen to contribute work to the ‘let´s buy it / kunst und einkauf’ group show, it was even more great when the museum´s resident blogger sarah bauer announced to interview me for the blog. even if there is too much to do for me, we managed to meet up yesterday. sarah appeared well-prepared and truly interested. she announced that it is great to have artists on the show that are still alive (I am) so you can make an interview. also it is good for her to have artists that are not so important (yet), so they are not too arrogant to ignore her requests. well, I always knew that it must be an advantage to be still alive and less important.

within her research, sarah announced to have found this blog and herself laughing out loud while reading the honest, funny and desperate thoughts I am sharing here. to cut a long story short, it is always great when people tell that they understand and appreciate the way I am discussing issues here. sarah promised to return for upcoming posts, which applies some extra pressure on me in being entertaining. well, hi, sarah!

you can read the interview over at ludwiggalerie.blogspot.de (and later in the interview section) and you´ll find a german version of my funny lack of demonstrated awe as already reported in the last blog post (2017-02-04 svenchen´s big score (langlauf, shooting, screening)). sarah managed to compress my long and meandering answers into short and structured statements. well, you see, this is life in blogs, you blog on me, i blog on you! thanks a lot and keep it coming.

even if i usually do not write about my teaching activities i am proud to announce that i have followed director dietmar sturm in teaching and have supervised an audiovision students documentary project on the HBK in essen. the result hast been released via the HBK´s facebook site, check out the five and a half minute documentary over here.

2017-02-04 svenchen´s big score (langlauf, shooting, screening) | entry by sven

I am pretty busy recently, i´m looking forward to the artists talk tomorrow as well to some further dates of interviews and lectures, recently it is a good time to feel important (I hope you´ll get the irony) giving me the thrill to move on knowing that things may happen if I keep going. anyway, I don´t want to share deep thoughts with you, today I just want to share two funny anecdotes from the last weeks.

the opening of ‘let´s buy it’ was well attended (see picture above), and it is a big honour to be featured in a show that is nationally and internationally reviewed. when I was sitting on a reserved seat wondering who the other important people (next to the other featured artists) might be, I was told that most of them are important collectors and supporters of the museum. I said: “is it really such a big thing?” and immediately the well-dressed lady in front of me turned around saying: ”this is the ludwig collection, it is a big thing!” as everyone else I am always happy to be taught a lesson and replied a little witty: “well, you know, I show my work wherever they let me.” she did not turn around again and I guess she did not get the joke. it is fun to be underestimated.

after opening the ‘jahresausstellung’ in the kunstmuseum mülheim we returen to the ruhr meadows finding a plate predicting laser biathlon. “what is laser biathlon?”, michi asked. “it is like laser triathlon, but just with one discipline less.”, I replied without having an idea, I simply thought it is a funny answer to ignore the core of the question. well, I found out a little later: you are running on a langlauf machine in a duel with someone and after 400m (approx. 4 min) you get to the laser gun trying to shoot five black dots while your pulse is pumping like a steam machine. well, is was pretty lame while getting to the gun, and I was irritated by technical problems while shooting, but I am not looking for excuses or reasons to sue someone. nevertheless it dot not crack it up completely, check the winner listing, my ranking (9 of 36) is pretty good, I guess!? laser biathlon was real fun and I need to do it again!

2017-01-15 boy with thorne at the artist talk: use your illusion | entry by sven

these days are really busy again, fortunately not as stressful as expected. i am recently preparing two group shows at museums and will have to hit some dates next week, nevertheless there is time for thinking.
above you see my 2017 video piece 'spirit with thorne' at the studio. the work plays on the classic motif of the boy with thorne mixed up with the mars rover called spirit which has brought itself into a position which makes further movement impossible. the work once again brings together issues of technology, art history and pop culture as well as the media-reflective struggle between video and photography. actually it also reflects my personal feelings of being trapped in a situation which feels like spirit with thorne.

i know that some of me reeders giving feedback feel this issue to be depressive, but this is not the point. for me this is an analysis of the situation which must lead to a strategy for further actons. it is as simple as that.

last thursday i had the chance to join an artist talk with gereon krebber at the HBK. i cannot say that i am a big fan of his work but he has appeard often enough on tv screen and the internet to get realized, also his work is well-known due the museum folkwang show and the sculpture in gelsenkirchen. within his talk he could not convince me of his work, but he appeard to be funny, self-ironic and very honest while speaking.
in the second half of his talk it became more interesting and nevertheless honest while talking about the system. and here comes a proof for honesty: even when he had made it become a professor at the kunstakademie düsseldorf, he appears to be very critic towards the art scene system and realistic concerning the chances to make a big career in the art world. it would be so easy to tell how great everything would be and that you must study now to become rich and famous. but he did not, from his position he nailed some fact that i have assumed.

in a nutshell, some statements fell on fertile ground: he said that artists making a big deal from early on will be in advance for their whole career, even if you cannot tell a quality difference from their collegues. also, artists with gallery representation are those who are able to go somewhere those without repesentation are not be able to. those who want to work with you will do it, no matter what it may cost and most recognizable: artists biographies are read as planned career options. studying art does not lead into a profesion, it can lead into a profession, becuase you have not learned a professional ability you can offer fro money. most artists fail to make money from it and about 50% of all profit is made in the art world among the top ten living artists. things appear as simple as that: today´s art is 'winner art', just a few have made it, and all of them have something in common even if they look completely differnet and there are not indices for quality: they are collected by the same (few) people.

krebber´s monologe on the principles and limited chances in the art scenen echoed a lot in me. all these statements appeard familiar, but hearing them from someone who has made it make them appear even more true. krebber did not turn it into a warning to not become an artist, you can have the illusion of success and you can use your illusion. so what is the consequence of it?

still there is a lot spinning in my head, the work in studio goes on as ususally. but as i have said it before, i need to get a serious gallery representation to keep on going. the chance for finding a gallery - or a gallery finding me - is pretty small. maybe i had ten years to go to where i am now, i do not want to end up being trapped in my own illusion. making art has teached me a lot about technology, networking, writing and people, maybe i should bring my skills into a context that is more open to it...

but that are just some thoughts shared on a sunday morning, last week was good anyway, i have recieved a new great work for my collection and made plans with artists i like and are thankful to have met. maybe there is to find what was looked for, but like anywhere else, it is one in a million...

i hope to see you at the upcoming shows in oberhausen and mülheim, well, the year seems to become local, nevertheless starting at museums. two great shows ahead, do not miss it!
see facts below.

2017-01-07 common procedures against better judgement | entry by sven

a happy new year to you first of all! recently I do not really feel to have something very important to announce, I simply thought I should start the new year in the journal and share some recent thoughts and pictures.
i´m always surprised who is reading and knowing about my actions. I have received feedback on my new year´s eve entry saying it sounds depressive again. well, indeed I have pointed on bunch of positive and negative aspects, and there have been both last year. anyway, I know that the art scene is probably based upon the shiny surface pretending to be happy, sexy and successful but after getting more and more insight views there is a lot I cannot believe anymore. it is just more authentic to tell what is actually on you mind without thinking about your career strategy.
here is one point of it: it has become a running gag among some of my friends and me to label things as ’egal’ (whatever), using it as an adjective (what it is actually not). watching whatever art based upon whatever decisions leading to whatever actions. that´s probably one very stupid thing I have learned from last year: whatever you do, you cannot take control on the result, your actions become whatever… #egal.

now, starting in a new year makes me thing about my strategies, and even if I consider artists as more creative than others (which is pure cliché, of course) I can witness in myself and others the lack of idea and vision to make things happen. so we are still using common procedures against better judgement wondering why the results do not vary even if do not vary the process. once again I try to advertise myself to galleries even knowing the chance for success is very small, once gain I am trying to form my own artist based gallery/community (wondering if I should turn it into a pop-up gallery) even if I have failed with this concept even 15 years ago with pav2.

do not get me wrong, the whole art thing is not a make or break to me, I have a lot more issues in my life, still I think the art thing is the model map to play around with to find solutions for the bigger picture. even if there is success, even if I come up with a new idea to bring things on it will not be the solution for everything. all my complaining is just part of the game. let us keep the eyes open questioning perfect surfaces while teaming for common projects, that’s all I want.

the time off was also time to return to museums, we had free entry to K20 and K21 and the luxurious shuttle service. I have also attended the museum folkwang with kent granyon yesterday, see pic on top. I just take cloakroom selfies to not get in trouble with copyright issues here… the nam june paik award left us with questions and less impressed, the pinault collection was a lot more inspiring.

more postcards: I have thought about making a tiny pop-up gallery selling works in postcard format only. what do you think of ‘black box contemporary’?

january will be full of well-timed work and two big openings for museum group shows, then I am putting on the new record of tides ep. still not much time to think, just to itmake happen.

welcome to 2017, let´s get it started.

update 2017-01-09: going back to work and getting up early brings you back to the evreyday stuff, it is amazing how many issues and projects fall down on you - or let´s say how much you have procastinated while dreaming in only two weeks. anyway, within this stress of improvisation because of technical differences and a filled schedule i have once again fixed the idea for the pop-up gallery to be called 'bigot black box'. i´ll think about a launch in summer, we´ll see, you can be part of it...
