the year 2015 is almost over, everyone at the studio is tired and needs some time off, actually we are still busy in preparing upcoming stuff. anyway, like every year we like to look back and sum up and have a look on upcoming projects.
the last year was coined by two solo shows and some group show contributions as well as a longer pause in summer.
we like to remember sven piayda´s second solo show at galerie143 entitled 'new pictures from outer rim' which again gained great response. also the galerie tellerand still shows piayda´s first online only solo show called '#howdeepisyourlove'. the result turned out to be surprisingly good and the exhibition period has been expanded until january 31.
the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen featured piayda´s 'kite' for the the 'kunststoffe' group exhibition. the kunstmuseum gelsenkirchen also shows a great video work by piayda, 'videotape/spool' can and should be sen until february 7. both show have been escorted by catalogues. you will find more impressions over in the exhibitions section.


quite unintended by nevertheless successful were two AESTATE based art shows: 'chaos is a colour system' in collaboration with michaela best turned out to be a very profitable installation piece. AESTATE´s video retrospective 'greatest flix' was shown during the week after the hungertuch art award at salon atelier. once again, find more impressions at the exhibitions section.


the hungertuch art award in the music category was a big positive surprise for the group. schedule difficulties made it impossible for chris huff and matthias danberg to join the ceremony. anyway, the group feels thankful and honored.


AESTATE did not play live in 2015, they only managed to perform two and a half dj sets at the anyway, one full and long set in august, plus a 45 minute guest performance during the 20th birthday party.
the group announced to be tired of dj sets. live and dj performances are not on schedule recently, we hope for some output in any case.


2015 was a very intense year concerning releases: AESTATE contributed the soundtrack for matthias danberg´s film 'order chapter 3' and put a limited time only download featuring tracks from the video piece. also danberg and piayda created two music videos for AESTATE. a little later kreislauf.org released the 'overseeds' ep triggering good critics.
danberg and AESTATE (or at leaset piayda) have confirmed working onupcoming audio/video projects. the kreislauf organisation label has also announced to release AESTATE related material next year...


a fantastic surprise: zany music put out AESTATE 'GREATEST HITS' quite surprisingly two days before getting the hungertuch art award and announced physical versions some weeks later...
very quickly the CDs of AESTATE 'greatest hits' of the first bunch of copies was already sold out.
a second batch will be produced after collecting some new orders, please be patient and/or check out the download version.
the compact discs have been produced on the fan´s demanding, the result is a great compilation of classic AESTATE tracks ironically called 'greatest hits'. also, the cd production can be seen as a test run for upcoming physical releases.

the studio has been working on different projects, soem even turned out to be disappointing dead ends, but we can already come up with fixed shows: the kunstmuseum mülheim an der ruhr will open another group show featuring different works by sven piayda. a series of lectures is also in the making, we will report soon.
the galerie143 has also confirmed a show with piayda´s participation for 2016.

last sunday the kunstmuseum gelsenkirchen opend the 'jahresschau gelsenkirchener künstlerinnen und künstler'. as you see above the show was opened by museum director leane schäfer, mayor frank baranowski and dr. christine vogt, director ludwiggalerie, giving an introduction on all featured artists and their positions. the group show will be running until february 7 and is giving an selected overview on 23 selected artists being connected to the city by birth or residency. please note that the museum will be closed between christmas and new year´s day.


this time sven piayda participates with the video piece 'videotape/spool' (2012-2015) delivering a seven minute mute loop playing with the evolution of the medium. next to piayda, artists like nancy e. watt, heinrich hüttner and jesse kraus are participating in the group show. more installation views, pictures from the opening larger catalogue snippets and even pre-work can bee seen in the exhibitions section.



a great hardcover catalogue documenting the group show is available from the museum. it features the exhibited works as well as biographic info for every participating artist and a short text on the artist´s position and the shown piece. the catalogue is available from the museum for only 12 euro. we have a one catalogue for you to win, write to studio[at]svenpiayda.com and tell you name and address and you favorite work from the show. the kunstmuseum gelsenkirchen will open the 'jahresschau gelsenkirchener künstlerinnen und künstler' this sunday, december 13 at 11.30am and will faeture a greeting by leane schäfer (director of kunstmuseum gelsenkirchen), a greeting by frank baranowski (major of gelsenkirchen) and an introduction by dr. christine vogt (director ludwiggalerie). sven piayda is expected to be present.
the group show is scheduled every four years and is giving an selected overview on artists being connected to the city by birth or residency. the jury has chosen 23 from 110 available positions giving a wide range in style and discipline.

this time sven piayda will participate with the video piece entitled 'videotape/spool' (2012-2015) delivering a seven minute mute loop playing with the evolution of the medium.
next to piayda, artists like nancy e. watt, dirk hupe and jesse kraus are participating in the group show.
a catalogue will be available documenting the presentation.

Das Video stellt wie viele von Piaydas Arbeiten medienreflexive Bezüge her. Die VHS-Videokassette war in den achtziger Jahren das erste Speichermedium, welches sich auf dem Markt durchsetzte und unbegrenzter Anzahl in privaten Wohnzimmern auftauchte, wo es Bewahrenswertes aus dem TV für die Ewigkeit konservieren sollte. Genauso schnell wie sich zahllose Tapes anhäuften, verschwanden sie auch plötzlich wieder, das Medium des Konservierens war plötzlich überholt und wertlos. ‚Videotape/Spool' spiegelt das zukunftsweisende Auftauchen der Videokassetten, die Schwemme seiner Kopien und sein glanzloses Verschwinden. Im zweiten und neueren Teil sehen wir eine einzelne Bandspule, welche sich im schwerelosen Raum abwickelt und in ihrer scheibenähnlichen Form schon an die Disc der DVD erinnert, welche ebenfalls im Begriff zu verschwinden ist. Die Bilder der recht einfachen und losen Erzählung erinnern dabei bewusst an Szenen aus bekannten Science-Fiction-Filmen: Das erste auftauchen der einzelnen großen Videokassette verweist auf den evolutionssprungeinleitenden Monolithen in ‚2001', die Kassettenschwemme an ein Asteroidenfeld aus ‚Star Wars' und die Spule an eine ferne Galaxie in den Tiefen des Weltalls. So thematisiert Video (aber auch jedes andere Medium) neben seinem bildnerischem Inhalt auch immer die Möglichkeiten und Restriktionen seiner selbst, seinem Scheitern an der Aufgabe des Konservierens und der Frage, was phantastisch genug ist, um bewahrt zu werden überhaupt würdig ist.

the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen opened the group show ‘kunststoffe’ on august 30, nearly three months ago. now, the show will be on its last week on display and will close on sunday, november 29, 2015. the exhibition received contradictive critics but was nevertheless extremely well frequented.
the exhibition also contains sven piayda´s 2013 video installation ‘kite ’next to works by mülheim based fellow artists like peter helmke, klaus jost, kuno lange and wolfgang van triel.

In seinem Videoloop ‚Kite‘ stellt Sven Piayda eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften von Kunststoff – seine Strapazierfähigkeit – auf melancholische Weise vor: Ein Drachen hat sich in einer starren architektonischen Konstruktion verfangen, die Fähigkeit des Segelns und seine Funktion hat er damit verloren. Dennoch trotzt sein Material der Witterung und der Wind lässt die künstliche Haut immer noch schlagen wie den Flügel eines toten Vogels. Dieser Moment, der eigentlich ein Moment der Vergänglichkeit ist, wird als Videoloop bis in die Unendlichkeit verlängert, und mit ihm auch die Lebensdauer des Kunststoffs.

on friday, september 11 the khaus quartier in herne started the ‘chaos in farbe’ work in process exhibition featuring photography, graffiti, street art, urban art and even digital art. the working and installing process is supposed to end on october 17 opening the completely installed works to be on display for further weeks. michaela best and AESTATE have already contributed their work on commission: ‘chaos is a colour system’ is their collaborative installation and is still available to be experienced: the KHAUS QARTIER has extended the show to be running until december 5, 2015. these are pretty good news, take your chance!

last saturday AESTATE have received the HUNGERTUCH AWARD in the music category at salon atelier in dortmund whose group of artists have won the prize two years before. the award was handed over by artist alischa diana leutner to author enno stahl (awarded in the category of literature), to sven piayda from AESTATE (awarded in the category of music) and to artist holger küper (awarded in the category of art). the ceremony took place at the salon atelier in dortmund showing holger küper´s works. the night featured reading by stahl as well as music from AESTATE´s ‘greatest hits’ album along to a mute screening of recent music videos by the group entitled ‘greatest flix’.

the videos of ‘greatest flix’ will be screened at salon atelier from 2015-11-14 to 2015-11-21 every night from 8pm to midnight. you will be able to watch the projections from the outside in the screening space.

AESTATE´s chris huff and sven piayda along to collaborators michaela best and matthias danberg are very happy and thankful for getting the award. unfortunately the event was pretty mistimed, danberg and huff could not join the event.

as the hungertuch award is conceived to be a challenge trophy, AESTATE will announce a nomination for the next award in two years. You are free to place your suggestions to the group. you can find AESTATE in the list of previously awarded artists.

zany music has surprisingly released the first 'greatest hits' album by AESTATE on 2015-11-12 following the fans request via facebook. actually, huff and piayda have simply chosen representive tracks for the ceremony to be played, the ironic idea of a compilation of great tracks became more and more serious.
zany music released ‘greatest hits’ without any promotion digitally only last thursday night. a physical version is also discussed recently but not on schedule. the album cover shows a colour range limited mash-up of covers of all previous releases delivering tracks to the album.
'greatest hits' features one track of every release, including edits of 'prov aiida' (from ‘prov aiida ep’) and 'the dog ciruit' (new edit) as well as the rare track 'ordercity' (from limited ep ‘order chapter 3 o.s.t.’). some tracks like ‘cute ter’ and ‘reken redux’ are now digitally available again for the first time after netlabel closings.
the title ‘greatest hits’ illustrates the group´s humor and is meant to be a homage to the english rock band queen, in consequence the video collection is entitled ‘greatest flix’.
zany music offers the mp3 album bundle for free download, but it may be available for a limited time only. zany music is recently working on a new, simple and cheap online release delivering system called ‘download on demand’. recently ‘greatest hits’ is only available from aestate-online.com.

we are happy to announce the screening of sven piayda´s first online solo show so far: the gelsenkirchen based galerie tellerrand has created a virtual exhibition featuring works by piayda which have been exclusively created for the show. as the exhibition takes place in a two-dimensional space, the pieces deal with missing (or pretended) physical depth. the show featues previously unreleasd serial works next to four video loops and a sound piece.
also the presentation is introduced by a laudatio by michael em walter and also features an interview with sven piayda.
sven piayda studio as well as the gallery have spent about a year in producing and creating an accurate presentation of the works and opened a month later than scheduled. the gallerists as well as everyone the studio are happy with the result.

the virtual show has already gained great response and will be online until december 31 and is accessable 24 hours a day and seven days a week. after closing, the works will be aded to the portfolio sites.

galerie tellerand is a virtual exhibition space run by andré wülfing, ulrich penquitt, jesse krauß and michael em walter.

we are very happy for AESTATE about the nomination and winning of the HUNGERTUCH ART AWARD in the music category. the award will be handed over this time by and at the salon atelier, dortmund on november 14. we like to thank alischa diana leutner for the nomination of AESTATE.
sven piayda is expected to take the award for the the group, chris huff´s participation is not confirmed. next to huff and piayda recent collaborators like matthias danberg for video and michaela best for installations are expected to be present as part of the AE-family.
AESTATE will not perform live but will present some tracks and video pieces as part of the event.

after starting the work-in-progress exhibition ‘chaos in farbe’ on september 11 the khaus quartier in herne will open the fompleatly installed show on october 17, 6 pm. the completely installed show is supposed to be on display for further weeks until november 28.

the ludwiggalerie schloss oberhausen opened the group show ‘kunststoffe’ last sunday. the show was opened with a greeting speech by apostolos tsalastras from the cultural department oberhausen and an introduction by dr. christine vogt, the head of the ludwiggalerie. sven piayda and many further participating artists appeard for the opening.

the exhibition features sven piayda´s 2013 video installation ‘kite’ next to works by mülheim based fellow artists like peter helmke, klaus jost, kuno lange and wolfgang van triel. escorting the show, a catalogue featuring all artists is available at the museum shop.

In seinem Videoloop ‚Kite‘ stellt Sven Piayda eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften von Kunststoff – seine Strapazierfähigkeit – auf melancholische Weise vor: Ein Drachen hat sich in einer starren architektonischen Konstruktion verfangen, die Fähigkeit des Segelns und seine Funktion hat er damit verloren. Dennoch trotzt sein Material der Witterung und der Wind lässt die künstliche Haut immer noch schlagen wie den Flügel eines toten Vogels. Dieser Moment, der eigentlich ein Moment der Vergänglichkeit ist, wird als Videoloop bis in die Unendlichkeit verlängert, und mit ihm auch die Lebensdauer des Kunststoffs.

we are very happy to announce that sven piayda with an artist profile site on kunstgebiet.ruhr. the website is the first digital guide to the art scene in the ruhr aera and offers collected information on museums, galleries, artists and public artworks. also the site offers educative content for younger students discovering art and its institutions in the ruhr area.
the digital guide lists artists having a special relevance for the area, being born in it and/or have been active in it over ten yen years or more. These artists have studied at academies and/or have done shows at notable venues.

in the 2011 interview for the coolibri blogbird sven piayda already explained his special connection to the ruhr area: ‘berlin gilt nach wie vor als der ‚place to be‘ bei aufstrebenden künstlern, aber das ruhrgebiet, düsseldorf und köln brauchen sich doch nicht zu verstecken. geografische gebundenheit wird oft als unflexibilität und naivität belächelt, ich glaube jedoch, dass sie einen wichtigen teil der identität ausmachen kann. das wird dann bemerkbar, wenn wir die ‚melting pots‘ verlassen und von außen auf sie und uns sehen. darüber hinaus mag ich die geografische nähe zu benelux, dort entstehen einige meiner arbeiten.‘

after some rumours around and a long time of waiting AESTATE have finally confirmed to play a dj set on auguast 1st at anyway, essen again. huff and piayda have performed severeal dj sets over the years often being credited as kent granyon (huff´s dj name) and sven piayda. the team performed their last common set in summer 2013.
AESTATE or kenyon/piayda dj sets are usually featuring different music styles from their wide range of influences and are usually quite long. tickes are free.

also, as the anyway will turn 20 years old on september 1st, kent granyon and sven piayda have announced to guest dj at the anyway birthday party at september 5th.
even when AESTATE are not performing live in 2015 you will have the chance to join dj sets from the group.

we are proud to finally present a classic audiovisual performance by AESTATE via streaming in the /CAMP:
in 2010 the kunsthaus essen invited AESTATE for their concert series 'montag tontag' to play live. the gig was filmed by different cameras, one static perspective filming from the right side as well as diverse smartphone cams capturing the audiovisual gig from different positions. the footage was merged together in 2012 to create a multi-angle view at one time (see still above) to get as much as possible and to make to documentation an experience itself. the /CAMP offers the full 60 minute set for the first time. a physical release is not scheduled.

AESTATE played a very classic set at kunsthaus essen having the triple projection perfectly timed onto the beats.
the group is recently working on new music and is focussed on releasing their forth album as physical version via zany music in 2016. we hope to see AESTATE live or deejaying soon as there are no dates on schedule.

as there is recently no show running featuring work by sven piayda we would like to focus your attention on upcoming shows and new /CAMP features. the ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen will open the group show ‘kunststoffe’ on august 30, 2015. the exhibition will contain piayda´s 2013 video installation ‘kite’. above you can see the work as shown on the ‘any minute now’ show at kugelpudel in 2014, now the work will return as stand alone endless loop at the oberhausen museum.

also the /CAMP is offering a very deep sneak into the future and upcoming shows: after ‘show/time’ at kunstverein bochumer kulturrat the studio is now focusing on a new and large solo show. the new show is supposed to come up in the kunstverein dorsten in 2016 and is called ‘culture mine’ as working title. in the /CAMP you can watch the curating status, the choice of works and also the change within the combining and placing. watch out, these deep views may be real spoilers!

on may 9 the ikosaeder gallery in essen will celebrate it´s first anniversary. here gallerist oscar ledesma invites for a big party in the current show. above you see ledesma during his opening speech on may 9, 2014.
the celebration party will take place at ikosaeder gallery, kahrstraße 54, essen, free and open for everyone on saturday, may 9 at 7 pm.



during the first year sven piayda was involved in numerous shows and projects of the gallery. next to his solo show ‘seascapes’ piayda also participated in the last year´s group show. also he performed with ledesma for ‘diorama camping tour’ a full night at the gallery rooms and created a classical music set with stefan wiehe from the klassik lounge for the opening of ‘seascapes’.

the same weekend offers another great film and video festival in switzerland: the stadtmuseum schlössli in aarnau will be hosting ONE MINUTE FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL AARNAU. among numerous other shorts not longer than 60 seconds the program features sven piayda´s ‘a day at the city’ as one minute edit. The original video will be featured in the 2015 portfolio soon and is with 24 minutes piayda´s longest standalone video loop.

yesterday, the hamburg based label kreislauf.org released the new AESTATE ep entitled 'overseeds'. the ep is the groups second release on the label after 'sum falls' in 2013.

the new release delivers ten tracks of different styles again, this time even more extrm betwenn electronica, post rock, exprimental and drone. you can download the release for free via archive.org and sonicsquirrel.com.

piayda has announced to concentrate working on larger projects. as you may have already read from the journal, piayda is preparing collaborative exhibition and performance projects, as well as a lecture series and an internet project. all of these projects are not supposed to be put out before september.

on saturday, march 21, the neue kolonie west is inviting once again to a guided tour through dortmund´s cultural quarter. during the neue kolonie west event #21 all galleries, cultural places, ateliers and related institutions of the quarter around the rheinische straße will be open and pleased to welcome you. next to the solo show in the gallery you will have the opportunity to spend a great cultural afternoon in dortmund. all info via neuekoloniewest.de.
